Just because something isn't productive doesn't mean it's a waste of time.
Gaming is productive, it is an activity that produces entertainment for yourself. Sitting staring at the wall is unproductive.

Do you see reading a book or watching a movie as a waste of time?

I wouldn't say that gaming is a waste of time, it's an activity that takes up the time that you could spend doing something else... and then it would be subjective as to what is and isn't a more worthy thing to be doing.

Personally, I paint, I draw and I write... Gaming for me works as a place to draw inspiration so it wouldn't be a waste of time. When I game it works as a mental exercise, Silent Hill 2 is a game that makes me think and stimulates me intellectually, it helps me be more fluid with my thoughts and has at times helped me break through a creative block.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

EDIT: How did I manage to quote him twice?

Firstly I wish members here would realize this isn't Gamefaqs with children who will start crying when you make a point. Stop saying "I'm prepping my flameshield" because it never, ever happens here. And when it does, the thread is shut down fast. Just saying that kind of stuff is more flamebait than the actual topic 70% of the time. It's called a discussion people, not everyone will agree but the escapist is fairly mellow compared to other forums (Gamefaqs)

OT: Anything can be a waste of time, watching a movie, painting, making models, sculpting. It's all in the eyes of the person. People think things like this don't know the meaning of tired and stressed out, you work better when you're not stressed and tired so doing something relaxing can often solve this problem.

Some people make models, some people read, some people play games, but it's all a form of relaxing. I knew someone who said video games are a waste of time, but reading wasn't to them. "There's learning to be had when reading, but not video games" was their excuse, and I looked them straight in the eye and said read up because you sound like you need to learn more.

Some people would say living is a waste of time, so the way I see it is if you enjoy what it is you're doing then it's not a waste of time.

Yes it is a waste of time, along with anything else which brings us joy or that we do to further our own bleak and pointless existence on this planet.

Of course gaming is a waste of time, but it's entertaining so is watching tv or a movie, even reading could be said to be a waste of time, it doesn't directly keep you alive but it's entertaining. (of course that is unless you're reading a spell for immortality, in which case it's incredibly usefull or a factual book, etc etc) The point of a game is it tells you a story allows you to enjoy yourself a bit and lets you get a little bit of escapism before you continue with your jobs. It's pointless but it helps you deal with the things that aren't.

I know everyone wants to defend gaming as much as possible, but on a personal level doesn't anyone else stop to think about the amount of time they put into games?
I do think about it, and then I come to the conclusion that I only live once,And I would love to live it the way I want to live it. Thats doing things I enjoy and recieve gratification from. Everything learned will be lost before you know it. Enjoy while you can.

And yes, I know that you can also spent your time learning things. People WANT to be productive because they receive gratification from doing that. Just a difference in interests.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.
a little off topic but I always found this interesting.

A lot has to do with social perception. it's always been believed that gamers are antisocial shut-ins who would rather spend free time playing a video game, versus going out and doing something social. and even with the advent of online gaming, to a casual gamer/observer there have been two things that have constantly been brought up.

1. I tried to play X game online, but when I signed on, I got killed left and right, and it wasn't very fun.

and/or

2. I tried to play X game online, but everyone was just swearing and calling me a fag. so it wasnt' much fun.

to one not as committed to gaming as many of us are, that'd be the end of it right there. Other activities, such as going out and playing basketball, or going to a club involve a social aspect, that we, as social creatures understand a bit more. What gives games and gamers a bad rap is that while many of us are socially well adjusted, with other hobbies and interests, the common depiction of a gamer is that of the overweight, unkept, antisocial and obsessed. all of which are viewed negatively by the general population, and honestly, rightly so. While many of the socially adjusted gamers I mentioned earlier don't exactly walk around with Gamer T-Shirts, and constantly spout video game quotes in social gatherings.

now before I end up TL/DR'ing myself, if gamers want to change the perception of their hobby being nothing more than a waste of time, it helps to have a more rounded out set of interests. social and solitary. Dont' deny what and who you are, but actually give people a reason to believe a gamer isnt' just a shut-in.

or of course you can say "I dont' give a fuck what anyone thinks of me." do nothing, and nothing changes. but since you dont' give a fuck, you never noticed anyways right?

I think I found reading this a bit more of a waste of time then actually playing a game. Like many people have said, anything and everything can be a waste of time an offer nothing (when it comes to a fun activity)
