Well, earlier today in L4D2 we managed to startle three witches at once. Cue brief moment of panic followed by sad realisation that no amount of running backwards firing into a cornfield was going to save us.

Also; tsssssSSSSSSSSSSSS

Running away from the SA-X in Metroid Fusion. That stuff gets your heart running. You can't hurt it, it basically one-shots you, get the hell away NOW.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth:

"Why, I'm just going to go ahead and sleep in this fishy hotel in Innsmouth. Surely nothing will go wrong as long as I lock the door, right?"

Seconds later,

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
Ditto.

Another one for me: Deathclaws in New Vegas. Scariest one for me though was in Fallout 3: I was walking the wasteland, and suddenly, I get kicked ahead several steps. I crouch, see the "Danger" thing, and turn around. First time I saw a Deathclaw was then. My pip-boy's light made it look like it's eyes were glowing an midnight. Freakin' scary.

Other games that scared me like this? Amnesia, Penumbra, Dead Space (a little), FEAR and FEAR2, and Alan Wake (not as much as the others, though)

I don't panic that easily...

However, I remember one specific event in my first PlayStation game (which was also the first game I ever owned in general) that made me quite jumpy. The game, lo and behold, was none other than...

Spyro 2: Getaway To Glimmer.

It remember it so clear: the homeworld: Summer Forest; the level: Hurricos.
There's a certain orb-assignment you need to do for an electroll: place all the energy spheres back in their place to power an electricity tower. However, there were Monsters - Gear Grinders - that would constantly steal away the spheres.

Every time they would come, a loud alarm would go of and you would hear the creepy laugh of the Gear Grinders. Both that alarm an that laugh creeped me out for a long time.

I recently played it again, for nostalgia's sake, and I still can't believe that something so silly managed to startle me.

So many options to choose from...

Amnesia: All of it.
Condemned: All of it.
F.E.A.R. 2: The crawling things.
Mass Effect 2: Suicide mission.
BioShock: The first few hours.

I panic in any game when I have to run from something and while running I can't see it, and if I get caught by this thing I will be DEMOLISHED! Like the Tank in Left 4 Dead or the Berserker in Gears of War.

Fallout 3: The first time I played it, it was so new and terrifying. The world was dead and I was as prepared for it as my character was. Sadly, I can't get this feeling from Fallout 3 anymore.

When I can hear something but I can't see it. Like a Witch in Left 4 Dead or some encounters with Ghouls in Fallout 3.

When I'm fighting something that will demolish me if it catches me and no matter how many times I shoot it, it will NOT die! Such as some enemies from Resident Evil 4/5 and some enemies in the Dead Space franchise. Particularly the enemies that just slowly walk towards you.

Halo Combat Evolved: First time fighting the Flood.

Some RTS games when I make a completely massive army that dwarfs the armies of Isengard and Mordor in LOTR and then I assault the enemy base only to be completely made their *****.

Vault 34. Fallout: New Vegas.

Especially since I didn't bring any followers with me, since they can get stuck in there.

In Stalker S.o.C after encountering the Bloodsucker in the pipes and thinking I had handled things well. I'm heading back to the trader when I remember I left some loot at the farm near the bridge so I decide to go and get it. Whilst picking up the stuff I hear a little Skree and I'm in WTF battle mode ready for anything but nothing comes at me so I put the noise down due to the environment. So I start walking out of the farm and feel like whisling as I head for the road when suddenly I hear a scuttling noise. Look behind me and I see a 'WHY HELLO THAR!' expression on a Bloodsucker's face. I jumped literally two feet and ran for it. Bloody sneaky buggers... Oh and does anyone else have those moments when you do a double take? Halo: Reach I'm looking at you.

Edit: Oh and mustn't forget the flood who freaked me out enough to stop playing Halo:CE till I had someone to CO-OP with. Never did a friend and I jump out of our skins more than in the flood levels of Halo.

Quote the Claymore, Nevermo- I mean *click*

I used to panic, these I have just enough time to regret running through that door between the click and explosion.

Playing Minecraft where little glitches or errors in your construction quickly turn a situation of 'watching the creeper outside' to "HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOW THE FUCK DID IT GET INSIDE!!" Then if you die you're glad you keep most of your valuables and building materials in an Obsidian room hidden beneath the basement

System Shock 2:

in the cargo bays when the protocol droids pop out of their crates, and any other instance of the protocol droids trying to be polite.

Also, I'm trying to finish a complete run of Half Life 2 with no deaths, and on TWO different attempts I've gotten the dune buggy stuck with one wheel hanging off the edge of a cliff. Gotta knock it back up with the gravity gun, but it can just as easily be knocked over the edge. Another bad one is on the railway bridge when the camera automatically centers forward, screwing up my steering and getting me stuck in the path of the train.

So, very, many moments in Demon's Souls were built around making you lose your cool, yet also requiring you not to. It got to the point where it would take courage to say you could do it and turn the next corner.

But for the sake of simplicity, let's take the moment where I'm locked in battle...and then informed that a Black Phantom has just invaded.

"Oh for Fuck's sake!"
