The mandatory multiplayer add-on. Focus on the single-player, you schmucks. It may make it marginally less crappy on average.
Yes, do one or the other.

Funny thing - this was the problem with Battlefield Bad company; only it was the opposite. They focused so much on the single player their multiplayer was a watered down version of a true Battlefield experience.

Of course, there are some who would say a true battlefield experience can't be had on a console... but either way, single player doesn't matter!!!
It can be generally assumed that military games will have multiplayer, because playing soldiers is great fun with other people. There's nothing really remarkable that the story can do, usually. War is war.

But come on..Bioshock 2? The Darkness? Is anybody honestly going to say "Gee whiz, this is great. I'm going to ditch TF2/MW2 and play this!"

Slip-shod moral choice systems that boil down to nothing more than a fork in the road, for one.

Stepping out of the way of something or someone in order to open a door/blow up a wall/kill whatever it is that you're stepping out of the way of. It's making a return and I don't like it. It was ok in Spiderman on the PSX, but only just, so don't bring it back, I beg of you.

I think escort missions have their merits, but only if the person you're saving is actually integral to the plot and doesn't die three seconds after you save them.

Also, the Second World War. We know what happened. We also at this point probably know what would happen in all alternate realities where Hitler won, decided he should control the sea too, and set about exterminating the fish only to get eaten by a shark... You know, the game where you have to lead the fish in battle and the regenerating health REALLY doesn't make any sense, nor do health kits, cos you're a fish, and you try to save Hitler and show him mercy, but the shark eats him anyway. And the bit in the middle where you have to convince the whales and dolphins to join the fish, cos even though Hitler's not after the seabound mammals yet, he's sure to target them soon. Basically I don't care about World War 2 games, or their alternate realities. Cos they've all been thought of. At least as of 5 minutes ago when I started raving about fish...

Bad voice actors should also die a horrible death. Also, did it irk anyone else that Altair in Assassin's Creed spoke with the only American accent in the Holy Land? Chronologically speaking it must have been the only American accent in the world at the time. What was with that?

Multiplayer achievements/trophies, the bane of online gaming.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I agree! I look onto F.E.A.R. 2 and Quake 4 with disdain that I'll never unlock those achievements because... They're practically dead severs.
Time Shift for me, now for games like TF2 it's fine cause it's online all the time, but FPSs that add online just to compete instead of a epic and awesome single player is making me mad.
You have no idea how much I appreciate the Call of Duty games hardly having any online achievements (except for the DLC Achievements in WaW)

Having an immense focus on multiplayer and little to no focus on single player. As long as there are RPGs, this will not bring an end to the world. But I beat Modern Warfare 2 twice (once on Recruit, once on Veteran) in the amount of time it takes me to beat the campaign of games that are criticized for being short.

"But ElTigreSantiago, they had a highly contraversial mission where you kill a bunch of civilians who all look exactly the same!"

Big deal! Playing Saint's Row 2 or any similar game is even worse, and you can murder people inside an airport in that one too. And you can highjack planes and use explosives and what not. Hats off to you, Modern Warfare 2, you're soooo brave.

Mandatory online for multiplayer.

This Re-he-heally get on my nerves!!
Just because we have great new online services on our consoles means we must scrap the tried and tested, (and arguably working) method of local multiplayer: Split-screening.

I think the larger TV's we're buying can be fairly divided in 2 or 4. Even moreso than the little tv's we used to play on when we were kiddies! (And we didn't complain then!)

It so hard for me and my buddies to get games, tv's and consoles together so we can have a good ol' fashioned gaming night.
A few years back it was so much easier, (AND CHEAPER!!).

I only have a handful of games with local multiplayer (on both Xbox 360 and PS2), and for some we STILL need extra TV's and consoles to set up LAN play.

Even then those LAN games don't work out too nicely, (look at Farcry 2 for instance, try playing that game with 2-4 people... yeah... wasteland...), as devs have seemed to co-incidentally removed bots to play with.

Talking about bots, where have they gone? A lot of games don't let you practice offline anymore. If the devs are going to remove any single player experience, at least let me emulate the online multiplayer to learn the ropes!

Its all about the profit these days. Hardware has nothing to do with it! (Despite what devs might tell ya!) Gaming companies just want to milk as much as they can, (hey thats why we get DLC that unlocks stuff thats already there but you can't get to because of the systems "protection"!).

*clicks fingers*...

Sonic games, Crash Bandicoot games, Metal Gear games, stupidly high numbers of Guitar Hero games (3 in one year Neversoft? wtf?), quicktime events, tedious escort missions, badly done driving missions (Half-Life 2), bland dull grey/brown shooters, gimmicky mini games sold for the same price as good games, Xbox live fees, modern warfare 2 online crashes/glitches, badly done ports (either release all versions to a good enough quality or just release them on the preferred platform(s) please devs, k thx), boycotters (such as the modern warfare 2 boycotters who bought the damn game anyway!!), gamers who think that a sequel has to be a complete overhaul to be classed as a sequel rather than an expansion... Left 4 Dead 2 is a sequel, get over it, look at games like mario bros 3, what did that add? different levels and new enemies and abilities, same as what left 4 dead 2 did, copycat peripherals (looking at you natal and wand), "pc gaming is dying" comments...

FINALLY! Thank you so much. I'm so sick of hearing about people ignoring the story mode solely for multiplayer. Developers put work into the storyline (sometimes) and i think its disrespectful really. Games used to be ONLY single player. Now, we've lost sight of truely compelling stories so we can shoot 12 year olds.

sorry about that. XD

Perhaps the re-generating health could be available as a pick-up itself and you use it when you see fit?
or like in Resistance 1 the health bar can be broken into segments and only the current one regenerates. Assassins Creed 2 did that aswell now that i think about it

Regenerating health. I hate how games let you heal within a few seconds after getting shot. Even the new Deus Ex is getting regen health. THANK YOU SO MUCH CONSOLE OWNERS!
um... didnt know Consoles are the inventers of the regerating Health...
I believe regenerating health was pioneered in Halo hence console. However back then many of us thought it was a good thing...

I think we need to see the end of day 1 patches. Please fix the game and then release it. Please?
The problem with having to patch a game is that day one, you get in so many bug reports because thousands of people are playing your game. Your testers won't have picked up on everything, and day one patch's tend to be simplistic patch's fixing crash's.

The secondary character who follows you around on missions that is so incompetant that he gets you killed constantly, but the game is designed so that you can't continue without him (either because you lose if he dies or because you need him to open a door or other portal as some kind of arbitrary human key)

I. Fucking. Hate. This

Okay, a couple things:

.bad animations/ stupid animations- yes, I know animating is hard, but in halo(for example) the only animation is your character's feet shuffling back and forth while you whiz forward like you have a fucking hoverboard. Jumping is just you magically floating into the air and your character doesn't even move his arms when switching weapons. Also, when the run animation continues even when you hit an obstacle. Bad animations rip me right out of the experience.

.retarted plots and/or characters- If you can't write a good plot, don't even try. Seriously, I could think of infinately better plots than some games. Also, stupid and/or poorly acted characters are annoying, especially in games with moral choices. Do they really expect us to care about bland, lifeless citizens who walk in circles all day and have 5 character designs between them?

.short single player modes- God damnit, if I'm going to play a game, especially ones with no multiplayer, I want a story longer than 6-8 hours. I don't want to pay $10 an hour for games. It helps if there is an extra activity like secret hunting.

.stupid achievments- Seriously, I hate achievents awarded for beating a boss or beating a level. Games with good achievments use them to provide extra goals so you want to play for longer. Shadow complex is a great example- it's only like 5 hours long, but I spent like 30 hours hunting achievments and secrets. Damn, the level 50 achievment took me forever. That also makes me think- don't make ridiculously hard and/or really boring achievments, like kill 5 billion of the same monster.
