Gaming's biggest waste of time is the cutscenes...and by extention, the story.
Why the cutscnenes? Because we want to tell a story. We think we can make stories better than the movies can with a few minutes of interrupted gameplay.

Seriously, you know how much budget in a game goes into these cutscenes?
Almost half.
You can have those insipid cutscenes to satisfy the people that want to have a story in their video games or you could have a game that is twice as long.

Yet, people go for the story because they are not sure whether they'd like a movie or a game, so they ask for both in one.
The way you put it accross makes it sound like you don't care for Story at all. You need some form of story to give the game a reason to exist, otherwise you're just pointlessly doing tasks for the hell of it. Even Black ops multiplayer gives you a brief premise.

Until there's a better way of conveying scense that are meant for cinematics, they're the best way for conveying that information, Half Life 2 doesnt have cutscenes, and it's fun to look around at little things they stuck in to make the world feel more alive, but those sections are hardly GAME sections, and would likely help the story a bit if there were actual cutscenes. I dont see why you seem to look upon having a story with such distain.

Have you encountered missions in a game or even an entire game that you found to be a complete waste of your time, essential seconds, minutes, hours, days or god knows how long, that you will NEVER EVER get back?

I remember Zelda, and a certain 'amazing' sword I spend time grinding to get because a certain blob made me go find it -_- ....I got the sword, then it smashed....and it can't be fixed, what a &&*"£&"*" waste of my time.
A yes... The giant's blade. You do know there's a better version with an even longer and more arduous questline attached to it, right?

I remember that achievement for L4D where you had to kill a stupidly large amount of zombies which took a stupidly large amount of time. I eventually did it though, but it was the most time costly achievement I have ever had to do so far.
I got to something around 35,000 and then it was all reset when they released The Sacrifice. DLC I didn't even buy. So it's now around... 500 ish? I no longer harbour any desire to ever get Zombie Genocidest.

As for my waste of time in a game, that would be the gathering... minigame (I suppose that's the closest category) in Bioshock 2. Let's see, you can cart the kid around on your shoulder, sacrificing precious rounds of ammo and health kits/eve hypos for a minimal ADAM bonus... or you can slaughter the little'un then and there. Not wanting to be a dick (but also not willing to do the former) I walked right the fuck away. I had all the Plasmids I wanted by that point anyway.

Don't worry, after all that work I put into it it was just a small woohoo, before me throwing a small handful of confetti into the air then continuing playing.

In other words you didn't miss much...

Please don't remind me of alone in the dark -_- I played that once despite a friend telling me not to borrow it, that is was rubbish, yet there goes stubborn ol me, why not, I'm not buying it after all......god, what a mistake that was.

What a load of trifle, never want to play something so shitty ever again, I actually think that game makes Haze look like bucket loads of fun.

While again I agree for the most part with what you are saying, especially about the poor characterisation, I simply can't agree about the 'redundancy' of the sacrifice in vain plot device. It doesn't work on one of the levels that you pointed out, due to bad character development, but the plot device could still work if you cared for the characters, or related to them in some way.

The comparison to the novel and the jam; that would still work as a drama. In a way, it functions as a textbook example of 'dramatic irony', the audience, reader or player know things that the characters do not. I don't think knowing the end of a narrative makes for an un-compelling experience, or makes it unenjoyable, or ultimately redundant.
I agree on your first point, that if you cared or related to them in some way, it would still have an effect. It's just for me, and since this is pretty subjective, it differs for everyone, I didn't have that. The Spartans of Noble team just never felt like real people with histories, hopes, dreams, etc., and their disdain for the normal people around them at times pushed them towards the unlikeable side, for me at least.

As for the 2nd, right again. I worded that wrong. What I was trying to convey was, if you know the ending, and you don't have a well characterized protagonist whose struggle you can understand, THEN it's redundant and pointless.

For instance, in the Jam story, where we know there is no jam in the fridge, let's say the person going for the jam is Jim. He's been estranged from his family for several years because he disagrees with their church going lifestyle. His girlfriend recently left him for another man, he's been laid off from his job, and both his best friend and dog were run over by a steam roller. Despite all this hardship, he's still trying to maintain composure. He thinks, "My life has gone hill, but if I can keep it together. Having a nice jam sandwich has always calmed me down in the past; maybe it'll help me gain some perspective." Unfortunately, once he arrives he discovers, to his dismay, that even the jam is gone. With everything seemingly crumbling around him, Jim spirals into despair.

Now, example 2, the "Halo Reach approach". There is no jam in the fridge. Some random guy wants jam. He goes to the fridge. There is no jam. He wishes there was jam. But there isn't. The end.

If Reach had characters I cared about, the pointless sacrifice could have been a really powerful, affecting moment. Instead, it feels more like a pointless distraction, and a contrived excuse to get rid off a cardboard cut out.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned mining in Mass Effect 2 yet
After ME2 we are actually in the same exact place as the last game with it worse now that the Council doesnt believe you. And you got a bigger ship and more crew and squaddys but it doesnt matter because come ME3 the Reapers gonna steam roll all over London and every other planet in the galaxy!

Portal. Wow i never thought a game could bore me that fast and just radiate valve pretentiousness like portal did. It is the only single game i feel i wasted my time and money and i'll never get it back. I dont want to return it because of how i'll get ripped but i cant STAND to look at it. So i throw it in the back of my closet.

PVP on WoW. Everything else wasn't a waste of my time. I've never been good at PVP, but when it comes to leveling and dungeoning I rock and get lots of tier gear.

Borderlands sadly, it was just repetitive as fuck and I quickly got bored of it and started Fallout New Vegas instead. Much more fun :)

What about grinding to defeat the dark aeons in FFX?

That was a waste of time :( Especially considering all of it does nothing particularly exciting or meaning ful when the actual boss of the game was possibly one of the most pathetic bosses in gaming history.
