For a fantastic SNES game soundtrack and my vote for best of that era have a look at Donkey Kong Country 1 or 2. It may just be nostalgia for me but I think they've got a couple of THE best songs to arrive in gaming so far.

I've never embedded a video before so I don't even know if I'm doing it right but:

I love this song at the end of Bioshock 2. Don't be fooled by the intro, it becomes a beautiful song after that in my eyes.

Edit: Bollocks. Not sure how to do it. Here's a link.

FOR THE CRAFTWORLD!
That was pretty cool, reminded me of the God of War soundtrack.

I dig the licensed soundtracks like Fallout 3. On a recent trip to DC my wife (it's her favorite game too) and I actually had the GNR playlist playing on our mp3 players while wandering around:

This one is my favorite of them.

But my favorite soundtrack of all time would have to be GTA San Andreas. It took place when I was in High School so I dug everything from the rock to the rap. But my favorite station was Master Sounds:

Back in the day the first Alex Kidd game soundtrack always got stuck in my head:

BioShock has some of the most atmospheric music I've ever heard and Final Fantasy VI has some amazing catchy tunes and epic scores.

Final Fantasy 9! I can listen to it whatever I'm doing. It also cheers me up. Also I'd say BF2, Oblivion and warcraft 2!

I always say Beyond Good & Evil... So I shall do so again:
Sneaky music at first and then when you get spotted
Bar music
Underground movement music
Fight music
There's more and they all fit the game perfectly, making it one of my (if not THE) favourite games ever.

Brutal legend for obvious reasons. i do like the music for Dynasty warriors (minus the drum machines) cos it sounds like dragonforce would if they were good.

I think Metroid Prime (Phendrana Drifts) or Bioshock (all of it) take the cake for me.
Such gorgeous sounds...

Ahem.
Mass Effect. Brilliant space music for a brilliant space game.
Morrowind. BEST. MUSIC. EVER.
Heroes of Might and Magic III. Damn, epic.
Halo. A bit of an underdog compared to the ones above, but still, great music.
Medieval: Total War. Both on the campaign map and battles, atmospheric and epic.

Original Pokemon Gold/Silver and Wario Land 3.

Can't remember any from Gold/Silver other than that I absolutely adored it.
And Wario Land 3 is amazing too.
I'll pick 8 and 16 bit over big orchestras 'n' shit any day.

Okami has a really nice soundtrack, very very nice. I really can't say enough good things about Okami...apparently.
But is it the greatest...probably not. What is the greatest? ...Please don't make me answer that...just trying to think about it hurts. There can't be just one. I can't even give you a personal favorite.

I started tearing up within 30 seconds...
T.T Know how you feel...
...Dang it... T.T
How did this game not sell well again? Who can listen to that and not run out to get it?
