So there i was talking to a friend of mine when Help came on by The Beatles. I stop the conversation then and there and proceed to sing like a drunken fool (because you know good and well that when The Beatles come on you are immediately taken over by some base instinct that causes you to lose all control). Suddenly I realize to my horror that she is not singing along, in fact she's just standing there only slightly smiling (I'm a strange person, she's used to my random bouts of excitement over very little) so I ask the unmentionable question "You don't know this song?" And she answers with "I don't even know who this is..."

I know, it hurt me too...

But it gets worse! I then ask her if she's heard other well known Beatles songs and the only ones she knew were Hello Goodbye and Twist and Shout. TWIST AND FREAKIN SHOUT! That's the closest song the Beatles have to Justin Bieber! So I swore on that spot that I would be the one to introduce her to the wonders of The Beatles. But I need help.

tl;dr What crucial songs belong in a 15-song playlist introducing my friend to The Beatles? remember she's new so songs like Helter Skelter and I Am the Walrus may be a bit much...

So far I'm for sure including Strawberry Fields Forever, Hey Jude, Taxman, and Yesterday

EDIT: For those of you who have joined the thread to tell me how much you dislike the Beatles, I want to let you know I had no say in the formation of the band and can therefore take no blame when it comes to how much you might think they suck. Also I'm not criticizing anyone who dislikes The Beatles, but you all have heard of them and the chances of going through life without having heard the Beatles is slim, that's the whole point of this thread.

In My Life is a personal favorite of mine. That piano bit near the end is what really sells the song for me.

EDIT: Whoa, what are the odds i'd get ninja'd in a thread like this?

Good riddance, The Beatles were untalented hippies that released a bunch of inexplicably overrated tripe and deserve to be forgotten. Same with people who are so goddamn judgemental that they cannot believe someone hasn't heard of a band from 40-50 years ago, then criticize their friend for 'only' having heard the song of theirs that sound the most like Justin Bieber's drivel.
So piss off, mate.
Note to self: Do not post drunk...

It's not mandatory to like the Beatles, but I must admit, it is shocking to have not have even heard of them. It's on par with having not heard of Elvis. Love em' or hate em', they are a massive part of music history.

I'm sorry but I don't really like the Beatles. I understand their importance and their influence on the music industry but I can't help but not like them, they're kinda overrated to me. A have a friend who absolutely adores them though and lots of other 60's, 70's and 80's music.

To be honest, I had no idea until now that Help was a Beatles song. And wouldn't have sung along on account of not knowing enough of the words.

Still, best of luck in improving her taste in music. I may not like them personally but the Beatles were undeniably good.

Also, show her Yellow Submarine. If she hasn't heard that you have permission from Life to shoot her, as a kindness.

No no absolutely not! and I absolutely understand not liking, but those of us who do like them tend to really love them, so we can have these types of conversations. I assumed those who did not like the Beatles would just ignore the thread considering the band name is in the subject line...

Any song from the White Album should do the trick, especially Back in the USSR.

Crikey, why do people who don't like The Beatles post in a thread asking for the most essential Beatles songs?

Anyway...

"Taxman" and "A Day In The Life" are the most crucial imo, especially with "Help!" out of the way.

Really? Any song from that album? Including Revolution 9 and Why Don't We Do It In the Road? *shudder*

Hey Jude
Let it Be
Yesterday

Ah Paul... **sigh**

Also:
Paperback Writer
Revolution (the single cut, not the album cut, which is also good, but not as iconic)
Elanor Rigby
A Hard Day's Night

... actually, just stick in the Beatles 1 album (the singles collection released in the 2000s) and you're pretty much set.

Edit: Damn, I forgot Get Back and Norwegian Wood!

Beatles...? Are they a musician or something?

No, but seriously I'm musically retarded. I know who the Beatles were, but I don't think I could name all 4 members without a multiple choice of some sorts and I can maybe ID like 5 of their songs by ear.

You're right, I should have excluded While My Guitar Gently Sleeps. What're the odds of 2 strangers having different tastes?
