I was in a fairly intelligent discussion today, when my compatriot just so happened to refer to Marcus Fenix and Master Chief as "Space Marines". Horribly offended by this misconception of his, I showed him the error of his ways by pulling up the 40K wiki.

With this situation in mind, have any of you ever been twitching in your seat as someone talks about something geekish so incorrectly?

While he may have been incorrect about Marcus Fenix, technically he wasn't about the Master Chief, who is a Marine (admittedly one of the better ones I believe) who is in space.

Thus: Space Marine. Sure it's not the 40K definition, but hey, he wasn't technically wrong about Mr. Chief.

I'm pretty much twitching in my seat that such a geeky gripe even exists.

I'm assuming you were speaking with your friend rather then typing with him.

"Space Marines", capitalized, is a specific term, but Master Chief could be considered a "space marine", lower-case, as it's a general term, a marine, in space.

and now my brain has fully consumed my will to live.

EDIT: great minds think alike eh amn? ;p

When people who think they know what they are talking about when it comes to ANYTHING, I get very antsy. I tend not to say anything because it usually involves me overhearing something involving consoles or computers or politics, and for the latter, you really can't educate anyone because they refuse to listen. That is why I don't say anything, for the most part. Unless its my friends of course =P

I get very upset when wrestling terminology is used incorrectly.

actually he's correct they ARE space marines in the military respect of it, just not according to warhammer 40k mythos

look up what a marine is and their roll in the american army and you'll see that both are space marines

also here's wikipedia to the rescue, proving him right and you wrong

Likewise, fellow mark. These curtain twitchers will be counting lights before the wrap.

I can't stand people calling The Doctor "Doctor Who"

It's an alien, yes, but so was ET, that thing is a Xenomorph

"Beam me up scotty" was never, EVER used in an episode. let it go

I don't know about geeky, but perhaps "artsy"

It irks me when someone says the primary colors are red blue and yellow, and leave it at that, when the idea of primary colors is more complex than that. RYB relate closer to CYMK when talking about subtractive primaries, RYB being used in basic art education and painting (and other color media) but CYMK as one group and RGB as another group are considered the subtractive primaries, and additive primaries respectively.

...I really don't know why it irks me...maybe it's because they're wrong, and I know it and I feel the need to enlighten them, but it's when and if they start to argue back than I get steamed

Actually Master Chief isn't a space marine, the rank "Master Chief" is a Navy rank so he can't be a marine. This is because the SPARTAN program was conducted by the Office of Naval Intelligence thereby putting him under the jurisdiction of the UNSC Naval forces.

Technically, Marcus Fenix is a space marine seeing as he isn't on earth.
But is he in space?

Marines= "what ho', I'm on this landing craft, off to give those fellows over there a right thrashing"

Space Marines="what ho', I'm on this landing craft, off to give those fellows over there a right thrashing, in space."

Maybe, but I think a SPARTAN is already one step up above a Seal. Besides what sounds more frightening? A man clad in armor trained to kill, or a small, loveable, oceanic mammilian?

Seals by far.

First of all because they exist.

Second because I've been in a kayak while a bull seal surfaced next to me, they look five times bigger in real life. Fucking terrifying.

Does it really matter? That's pretty much my stance on anything to do with this kind of thing. So in answer to your question, no. I can't be arsed to argue points like that seeing as I lack the enthusiasm to correct people, unless it's something majorly stupid...
