Am pretty athletic did football in high school and orienteering while I was in ROTC (cross country running for those that don't know) but it doesn't change the fact that am a huge geek and a lazy one :)

Well, I take pride in the fact that I'm an extremely average athlete. And by average I don't mean bad, in fact, maybe our respective definitions of average are different, so let me clarify. When I was in high school, I was a starter on the basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and golf teams. I possess a good amount of athleticism and generally pick up things that involve motor skills quite quickly and easily. However, even though I was a starter on those teams, I wasn't a star and I'm definitely not good enough to go pro (except maybe in baseball if I dropped out of college and worked exclusively on baseball) but I'm definitely above average when it comes to regular people. And yeah, I have absolutely no problem with being a gamer as well. Suits me just fine.

I'm a casual player of ultimate frisbee, but that's as far as my competitive sport playing goes.

Ultimate frisbee is the shit, by the way.

I do martial arts, does that count? Karate, five days a week. Planning on supplementing it with weight training when my next semester starts.

Well, I go to the gym 3 times a week and run for 5 kilometers every other day... so I guess.
Am thinking about taking up some kind of martial arts. Like boxing.

Hi, my name is Jernau and I'm a long time lurker...but something today made me want to start a thread.

You see, I am like many of the people here on the escapist a massive geek, and unashamedly so at least to my friends but on the other hand I am also an aspiring athlete. I hope to make the under 23 squad for Team GB rowing by next year and I will be going to the trials during the winter season. If anyone knows about rowing is not easy it requires a lot of dedication and hard work and exercise. Now it got me thinking that almost all of the athletes that I know and how really...none of them are huge unrepentant nerds like me either.

So, am I a freak doing something which would normally be considered the antithesis of being a "Geek" or are there other people out there who do competitive sport as well as being enamored with MTG, WoW and FFXIII. And even if you don't do competitive sport are there any other times where you just sit down and think, i swear that these two things just don't mix!
Ive practiced football (actual football, not american) for 5 years and have been an avid indoors climber for a couple of years. I am probably the second biggest nerd in my school that is full of outcast and metalheads. Sadly i am one of few people who actively enjoy sports at least in my school.

I looooove to go running. For awhile, I was doing 13 miles runs and averaging 7 min per mile. Lately I do five mile runs followed by a swim in the ocean. I wish I could play tennis but I have no depth perception (I had two eye surgeries when I was 5, because I was close to going completely blind so a lack of depth perception is a small price to pay). I don't like competitive sports, but I love solo stuff like hiking, swimming, running, and cave exploring ^^.

yeshh i am, i went to the state finals every year in club and high school soccer and i got offered full rides from about 5 colleges for soccer unfortunately none of them had engineering... and i play basketball and football a few timse a month pick up games so i'd like to think im pretty athletic.

although i despise just running, its so fucking boring. so i am but im not at the same time, and i am very proud of being a nerd, although i dont sit there and gloat about it in front of ppl, anyone who is a decent friend knows im a massive geek.

Athletic? No, but I'm somewhat well built due to my work requiring me to carry of lot of weight in small increments of about 1/3 of my own weight. That's free workout right there.

I play a lot of sports (usually football, both American and not American), but not on any teams. Usually just with my friends.

Well, I play a lot of games, and I too am unashamed to say that I love them. On topic, I play lots of sports. About 4 hours of tennis a day, and usually a 40 minute p90 workout. If you don't know what that is you can look it up, since it makes you feel absolutely superb.

So yes, I care more about myself then games, as games are not real, and your body should be cared for. Eat good food, stay healthy, and own more noobs in Battlefield 2!

PS: First post in 2010?

I had to be in the top 10 in my school of 2000 for running. I'm off to a small college now so I will reign the speed king!

In my senior year of high school I was on the Football team, going to the gym daily and an "anchor" (lead player) on the trivia team. So yes, I'd say I was an antithesis of geek.
