I like them better as brown glass balls. Just as I prefer everything else the way it was when I was a kid. The only passable effort anyone has ever made to "improve" the films is this: http://fanedit.org/517/

He has made at least two more confirmed changes. Here's the first one.

I can tolerate this one, I can grit my teeth and power through it. It's near the end of the movie and Return is already a clownshoes silly movie cause of the Ewoks.
The first "no" isn't bad. I got a sort of a vibe that Vader made an introspective rejection of who he was at that moment and vocalized his rejection of the Dark Side, kinda like thinking out loud. The "NOOOOO" that followed was over dramatic shit.

But this next scene, THIS NEXT SCENE.

FUCK YOU LUCAS! FUCK YOU AND DIE!
Eh, I don't remember what the original Krayt Dragon call sounds like, so this doesn't offend me as a fan. It does offend me as a biologist; there is no reason an ambush predator would announce its presence with a "call". That, and reptiles don't howl

The films are his property, so if he wants to tinker with them, it's his right. And if you don't like the changes, just watch a non-altered version. Just because a new version appears it doesn't mean the old ones magically disappear.
They do though. Production of DVDs and such ends. Often the version is destroyed so it can't be continued. DVDs and tapes don't last forever.

Doing this kind of stuff is paramount to if every few years Da Vinci crawled out of his grave every 5 years and gave the Mona Lisa a new hair style to stay trendy. It's art and deserves to maintain its integrity.

Lucas is just trolling people at this point if you ask me. He's become an insane recluse that hates his creation and the people that admire it and will do all he can to see them weep so he can feast on their sadness and grow stronger.

These debates always come up. I think this person says it all:
"People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians"
Who said that? Mr. Lucas himself. Hypocrite much?
Sadly that Lucas died a long time ago. Now we have someone who's basically a Bond villain; hiding out in their secret lair, stroking their beard, and pondering what evil deeds he can do today.

I theorize Lucas starts every day by killing a puppy and eating its heart.

While I do these changes seem unnecessary, I don't think this is really that big a deal.

I couldn't have possibly said it better myself.

What is the point of these? They sound horribly out of place, and I don't just mean that in a nostalgic "He shouldn't be messing with the old movies"

The new sounds don't integrate at all into the scenes, maybe Darth's second 'Nooo!', but his first was just... fake, and Obi Wans call is just weird, I mean, what was wrong with the first call he did?

As I've said before, somebody needs to give Lucas a proper project to do, to stop him ruining all his good films. Can't we think of some marginally good sci-fi piece that no one really cared for, that we could give him to redo?
Actually, you might be onto something. Maybe we can get him to reboot Firefly and then lock up every episode after he's finished. I mean, Star Wars was great the first time he made them...

OT:I think now he just want's to see how much he can troll us/get away with.
Shut the fuck up! He may hear you! The last thing we want Lucas touching is Firefly. YOu know he'd do something dumb-ass stupid, like put Endor in there.

The "Limited Edition" packages containing both the originals and the 2004 versions were still available in stores last time I checked.
That's the 1993 remix of the original. The glass shattering when Han shoots out the camera of the detention block gives it away - as well as "New Hope" on the crawl.
Strange, because my crawl most definitely says "STAR WARS" and nothing else.

That reminds me... my Episode V and VI Limited Edition DVDs are still unopened....

Guys, can we not get so butthurt about this? I mean honestly, I'm as into Star Wars as the next guy, but are these two minor little changes going to really make the movies THAT MUCH WORSE? Personally, I like the no. And yeah the new cry is a little silly, but whatever. I still like the films.
I think the biggest problem people have with these changes is A.) they are completely stupid B.) unnecessary/ have no purpose C.) can be seen as ruining the tone/ feeling of the scene and D.) its not just these changes. Lucas constantly keeps making little changes but they are added in drips and drabs over time. Yes, the reaction would be over the top if these were the only two changes to the Original (and only damn it!) Trilogy. But there's a lot more. I totally understand where the fans are coming from. There's no need for these changes. No one director does this either (as far as I know)

Imagine if James Cameron went back and added pointless crap to Aliens or Terminator 2. If Tarantino went back and added CGI fight scenes to Resevoir Dogs. Think of your favourite film ever, and imagine the director went back and changed small, little finicky things. Theres no need for it.

People just want a HD version of the classic films, so they can wallow in glorious HD nostalgia.

What difference does it make anyway? it's not like there's any of us who don't already have this movie.
Mmm, that point kinda loses its impact when you take into account the fact that viewing technology has changed quite a bit over the years. Me? I've got the trilogy on VHS...which is problematic considering that the system has been mostly cycled out by now. If I want to see the movies again say 10 years from now, it's very probable that I'll have to use the updated version, which I'm having trouble taking seriously due to those updates. Is it ruined forever? Probably not, but that doesn't mean I can't call out bad execution when I see it.

Hmm...odd...do you still have the enhanced "thump" of the Stormtroopers head and the camera explosion?
As far as I could tell, none of the enhancements I know of are present.

Also, as far as I know, the crawl was changed for the film's third run in the theaters, before any other changes had been made, and it seems unlikely that they've cut and pasted parts of different versions together.

It even has the original theatrical aspect ratio.
