Microsoft, why do you keep doing breathtakingly dumb shit?
I wonder if it really is that dumb.

All it says to me is that we who frequent gaming forums, we who follow E3 closely are not who Microsoft are targeting, and they know the audience they want doesn't hear any of this, so it really doesn't matter what they say.
Doesn't mean it's not dumb, just that they target people who, as they said, don't look at details.
It depends on how you define dumb.

To me, dumb regarding a business means taking actions that will decrease profits.

And while their current actions may decrease sales, I think they'll be increasing profits.

I believe the profit lost from those of us who won't put up with their crap, will be recouped and then some by those that don't care.

To me that's not really dumb, unethical sure, but not dumb.

Hey, this may end up being a beneficial thing i some way.

With that type of sword hanging over their heads, maybe it will dramatically cut back on the number of immature knuckle heads screaming "******" into their headsets?
Nah, they would all just migrate to the PS4 or worse the PC..... *shudder*

You do know that the only way to get banned on xbox live right now is for hacking right? So as long as you are not going around hacking in games or moding your system then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Hey on the plus side it might reduce the number of these assholes in multiplayer games.

Isn't this exactly the same with Steam and Origin? I don't see what's bad about it. It should help prevent hacking in multiplayer games and hopefully make the community more civil seeing as there is an actual risk in being an asshole.

Then there is also the point they didn't say what is necessary for a ban. It most likely wont be for small stuff like occasional swearing on xbox live but might happen if you act like a total ass to many people and it takes a significant reason (death threats or something).
LOL no, XBox live is far more strict than Steam, XBox live does 20 or 30 bans a day for gamer tag names not approved or too many gamer tag name changes. Ignore or miss their warning to change the tag and you are banned for 7000 years, all games, DLC and whatever else they have associated with that account is gone, including unused points, none of that is returned. It gets worse if in addition you get a console ban, as that console can never be connected to live again.

Check out the forum, I only know about it cause it is hilarious to read at work, when I had an XBox it was... Ummm lets just say I couldn't connect it to live.

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/41.aspx

They also do mic bans if you ever see anyone with XBL in their name don't swear or anything, that does not mean put XBL in your gamer tag for a laugh, that gets the 7000 year ban as soon as one of them sees it. Also there is absolutely no appeals with XBox Live, Steam does, not sure about Origin.

You know I had a funny thought about that. What if the Always on Kinect had a hidden feature that when it hears certain key words when the player was doing mp just shut off with a disclaimer about the use of foul language?

Of course it could only be applied to console owned by people under 18 but it would be funny.

On topic this is the reason I don't wanna mess with origin on the pc this kind of policy is highway robbery and unethical as hell.

That will never happen. They save the audio logs on NSA servers to help clear the names of report-abused suspects.
Ok that makes me feel more releaved to hear. Guess I could have done a bit of research before making a post

Wait, does that mean when someone dies in Call of Duty they have to accept that maybe they just suck at the game? Interesting...

I've got an Xbox Live account on my 360 that I've had for five or six years now, it has over 85,000 gamerscore and over 100 games attached to it. I've really enjoyed the years spent on that account and everything it knows I've achieved.

Too bad Microsoft saw fit to block it yesterday, because MS can't verify my two hotmail accounts that my Live account is linked to. They're old, I used 'em in high school when I first got my 360 and only made a new email account two years ago. I just remember the address and passwords for them, but MS can't help me because I actually couldn't tell them the names of my last email recipients and email topics I sent from accounts I haven't used for years and can't get into, despite handing over EVERY other bit of information I can provide.

Microsoft's solution? Fill out the forms again and try harder this time, or create a new account.

Thankfully I can still play games on my Live account offline with the ethernet cable detached so I have basic functionality that way, but this whole sudden, unpleasant experience has reaffirmed why I won't be getting an Xbox One. I can't imagine how furious I would be if this happened on a system that demands online check-ins, because Microsoft don't trust ME enough. I fail to see exactly what I get back from this, either.

At this rate the only way I'll be convinced about the Xbox One is after it's been out for a while and users themselves can confirm that the console is actually convenient and friendly. Until then, I can't wait to be rid of this bullshit when the PS4 arrives.

Yes but unless you got a ban for your account being hacked steams support service just tells you to create a new account and buy all your games again.

Banning people from their games doesn't even seem legal
O hi person who has never read a software EULA. You don't buy games anymore, not since the 90s. These days you're just a long-term one-charge renter.

Good.

I dont think I have ever encountered information about someone being banned from XBL without deserving it. They only pass out full bans for outright cheating.

And the behaviour bans are all short term penalties, which require consistent assfuckery behaviour with clear lack of intention to change before it becomes a permanent ban.

So again, Good.

Unless you're defending people's right to come online and be a complete asshole to everyone they can come into contact with, ruining the experience for others 'because they can'?

And if you say free-speech or anything of the type I'll be be more than happy to prompt you to the fact that a private corporate run network like XBL is not subject to those laws. Especially since its global, and those laws dont even exist everywhere.

I just watched a video of Major Nelson specifically answer this question. He said if you get banned from Xbox live, only the ability to play multiplayer is taken away from you, not access to your library.

Now.. just need to find that video.

That isn't as bad and I am OK with that. If you can't play well with others, you'll have to have recess by yourself.

I'll say moral scale is why this should not happen. You see, out there in the world is a 20 year old guy/girl that has been raised to think that members of certain races are inferior. That's is their perception of the world because that is what they have been taught thus all they know. So, they are going to throw around racist slurs and mean them online most likely. Probably really nasty ones too. However, as much as anyone dispises this person, they have no right to judge his morals and take his money offering him nothing in return. Look at how "subjective" people are making sexism out to be. There are people pushing so hard for it that they are suceeding in blurring the line for many people as to what is morally ok and what isn't. A sale should not be able to be re-negged without refund based on your morales after the fact.

How about I sell you something for $50+, then after I have your money I take it away because I think your morals are shitty. You still think that is good? Of course, Microsoft is not selling you anything because then it would be bound to stipulations of the sale. With it being a "license" Microsoft has all the power and consumers have none, but you know as many consumers say "it isn't that bad tossing all your consumer rights of a completed transaction over completely to the supplier".

Theoretically, Microsoft can take all your games away legally "just because they deemed your license expired" and their bases are covered. I ain't saying they will or would. I am saying they can and could.

Conduct to others permanent bans are only placed if a user keeps doing that same thing, again and again and again without taking any remorse from the penalties being leveled at them.

Its not someone going 'Oh hey, you purchased our product but now I dont agree with your morals, kthxbye'

Its someone going 'Hey, they way you're acting is pretty offensive to a lot of people, and we're going to place some short term restrictions on you and ask that you not repeat that behaviour.' And then the person in question repeating the same or similar actions again and again and again 5-10 times until they're finally barred permanently.

Moral scale is fine, but if you act in a way, outside of your home, and are repeatedly told its bothering others and asked to stop, and you dont, you've thrown away your reasonable 'innocence through upbringing'.

My advice is, if you're that keen on the Xbox One titles, buy a modded one that can play offline. It's a lot like how, in Brazil, most Xboxes are modded to play pirated games (most legitimate retailers sell pirated games) because brand new games are so expensive.

Its funny, because if I were to get banned on my 360, I'd still be able to play all the games I have offline.
Because they're mine, I bought them and have the system to play it on.

If Microsoft wanted to take those games away, they would have to break into my house and steal them.
Well Microsoft won't be taking anything from me this gen.

While on the subject, someone should really make a "I have zero Xbox ones" version of:
