50$ is a small price to pay for a year of fun. FUN. Not fake fun like PS network or Nintendo WIFI.

Spend one day online with Sony an you will see what "free" gets you. Try to start up an online game on the Wii an see how annoying that is. that 50 you give to Microsoft at least feels like it is going to an actual service. Voice communication, ease of interface, the lack of Sony's Home, it has what you need and not what they think you need.

I have a blast on the Nintendo Wifi with Super Smash Bros Brawl.

As I stated above, using ethernet to powerline would be the best bet for someone like you. And it would boost your signal strength for other things that are wifi.

yes they did the same thing with their wireless receiver, they didnt include one, then market one for 100 bucks flat (rest assured they make them in some sweat shop in china for 10 bucks) now thats profit
From what I have heard, the wireless adapter has a very bad signal receiver.

It's far easier to use a ethernet to powerline adapter, which essentially gives you the same signal strength as if you were to plug your 360 straight into your router and you can get them for $50. A much better deal IMO.
I've never had a bad signal. I love my wireless receiver. Pricey, but worth it.
How close is your 360 to your router? That's most of the issue when it comes to signal strength. If it's close enough, like in the next room, I'm sure it works as advertised. I still wouldn't pay $100 for it though. I'm far too cheap.
86 1/4 feet from it.
I guess I'd have to know what type of specs your router has too, but that seems like a pretty reasonable distance. The people I have heard who had problems had their router on one floor and their 360 on another.

what pisses me off though is they could easily provide multiplayer online gaming for free for gods sake its microsoft, they could easily maker enough off downloadable content to support themselves, yet they feel the need to chrage millions upon millions of people 50 dollars a year for it.
so what, because they have the money to do so, are they not allowed to make a profit over something they host? you people make me sick sometimes

No, Like when the company giving you the connection says "Go have fun!" but the fun doesn't exist. Super Smash Brothers will ALWAYS be fun, Offline or Online.

Essentially, you get two outlet plug-ins. They look like surge protectors for a reference. You'd plug one in by your router and plug your ethernet into it. That sends the signal throughout the wiring in your house, and with the second wall plug-in, you put that near your console and connect an ethernet cable from that to your console and viola! There are many different flavors offering many different speeds. They can be as cheap as $30 to as expensive as $200.

Gasp! $5 a month!? The horror!

Seriously though, I am perfectly fine paying the money, the service is great, the connection is fine and I don't mind it at all.

Paying for online is what lets them provide the best service of the major consoles.
What we really should get on Microsoft for is charging money for icons and backgrounds the PS3 has for free.
Actually, I'm guessing the Ads make up the costs. What you're paying for is essentially running a server, nothing else really.
OP: If you don't want to buy gold, then don't. Spend it on something else.

Wellllll, you can talk to others, hell, that is actually free. (Silver Membership) and sometimes it is better to pay as it will be better and better maintained. Why bother spend time on making something better if you are not getting money from it. People ***** about paying for Live too much. Maybe though, it is good as it weeds out the people I do not want to play with online.
