I just hate when i listen to a song that i am generally a fan of, and some kid says "I love that song, it was on Guitar Hero!". It makes me die inside.
Why?! How is that any different from "I love that song, it was on the radio the other day!" or "I love that song, it was in GTA 4!"

If someone came up to me and said "I t was in GTA4" i would feel equally as horrible.

I think quite the opposite, quite a few of my all time favourite bands (most notably rage against the machine)where ones I heard on guitar hero, and I love playing them.

DanielPowell33 said:
They didn't ruin my music, Metallica is my favorite band, and has been sense WAY before GH:Metallica came out.

But what does piss me off is when people suddenly become huge fans of a band because they played one of there songs on GH/RB, then try to act like they know everything about them.
:(

I am an avid Rush fan, since the day I was born I listened to songs like Limelight, Subdivisions, Spirit of the Radio, their classics. Now, because of guitar hero, I can't listen to YYZ or Tom Sawyer because they've been severely overplayed. Whenever anyone mentions Rush, they automatically only know two songs and they play it over and over again.... which, don't get me wrong, they are very good songs, but they have a whole 7+ albums of pure gold that can enrich your lives, not just two songs.

STOP PLAYING THEM, LISTEN TO SOMETHING ELSE

Theres not a problem with them liking the song, just the people to try to play like know a band cuz the played one of there songs.

I had the longest argument with a guy trying to tell me that Dave Mustaine was never in Metallica.
Okay... how does the music game genre have anything to do with that?

There have always been morons who don't know shit about what they're talking about, and there always will be.
I was playing GH: Metallica at one of those display stands at walmart, just finished playing Seek and Destroy , and this guy says "Dude, i love that song. Kirk Hammett is the best guitarist ever!" Then the argument starts, come to find out he got all his info about Metallica from GH.

It's just that you've heard the song so much you don't wanna listen to it anymore. It's not GH/RB specific.

Also while I do tend to look into bands as a result of me enjoying their songs in GH/RB I try not to act I know everything about them. For instance, I looked into The Who, great band I know nothing about them, other than that their drummer was crazy.

Music I care about isn't on Guitar Hero, so, no.

If anything, I'm glad it makes people listen to the songs in a new way and actually pay attention to something other than the vocals.

i don't agree with that, rock band and guitar hero introduced me to a lot of bands i had never heard of which i now like,
before GH and RB i had never heard of
Anthrax
Megadeth
Avenged Sevenfold
Rise Against
Disturbed

and now i am obsessed with them

... Why? Why does it automatically suck if it is heard from GH/RB instead or the radio or from a friend. You can't be happy that a song you like is put on guitar hero and has now spread to other people so they can enjoy it? I for one am fucking ecstatic that Soundgarden finally got some love with "Spoonman".

Personally, GH introduced me to Cliffs of Dover which is now one of my favorite songs.

This morning I listened to Slayer - Raining Blood when it came up on Random Shuffle on my ipod Nano. And I gotta say, it felt sad. I remember back when I first heard this song at 14 years old (in 2005) and thought it was one of the best songs we have ever had. Nowadays I almost never listen to the song. Why? Because every time I heard it all I can imagine is that retarded rattling of colored notes that so many posers have done to try and beat on it Expert and it makes me go "ugh, I can't listen to the song anymore it's been too burned". I'm sure this applies to other people who have had one of their favorite songs raped on Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

EDIT - Just to clarify what I'm saying, it's like people are praising and burning the songs not because they really like the music or found it to be their liking, but because it's on Guitar Hero/ Rock Band.
just listen to Jezus Saves, a way better song IMHO
and yes, it has happened to me, that I start avoiding songs on GH, although GH and RB never really have the best songs of the bands.

the appealing thing of GH/RB is that it's easier to get good fast, I never touch my GH anymore, it's been a few months, I only play mah bass...

Awhile back when I was still in high school, the class was listening to a radio while we were working on an art project, as it was an art class. A few good songs came on that I've enjoyed listening too since I was little.

Some random chick turned to look at me and said "You only like those songs because they were on Guitar Hero 3!" And I blinked, having only played the first Rock Band and Guitar Hero 1. I looked at her and had to try and convince her that I've liked the music since before it was on a stupid video game I never played :p

Guitar Hero/Rock band actually helps a lot of my appreciation for songs. I play songs I don't like because I must to continue the game, then I grow to like them. it's one of the few times a game has enhanced my appreciation for something else!

OK if you want to talk about song rape, you have to go back to GH/GH2, when all the songs had to be rerecorded. In Guitar Hero 2, the cover of Danzig's "Mother" is soooo fucking bad that whenever I was forced to play it (career mode) I'd mute the TV and have my friend play it on the computer so I wouldn't have to listen to that god awful clown trying to sing in the game. Sure Glenn is hard to imitate, but at least get someone who will try without sounding like a complete asshole. That's one of my favorite songs, and I hardly listen to it anymore. Me and my buds still sing it at the top of our lungs when we hear it on the radio, tho.

Prayer of the Refugee
A great song, but honestly i don't give a damn if you can beat it on expert FC

Also, i hate that people constantly spam Youtube with them beating Through the Fire and the Flames on Expert
Good for you! You just wasted a crapload of time to make a video of a huge cliche that odds are no one is ever going to care about (except maybe two or three years ago)

Wtf?

"Retarded rattling?" "Posers?"

I'm more than a little confused.

Even though many of my favorite songs have been featured in video games where the listening experience was weakened by the sound of gunfire, for example, or the screams of pedestrians being run over, I still enjoy those songs.
Why don't you understand? The "rattling" is the flimsy plastic toy that you use in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The "posers" are the ones that think they are sweet because they can play with said flimsy plastic toy.

And I don't know what GH/RB you're playing that has gunfire and screams of pedestrians being ran over.

I really don't understand your point here... Are you trying to insult me? If so, why? What does this accomplish?
I would be happy to explain. I saw a mistake, so I corrected it (I don't recall insulting you in any way shape or form.)

The title of the thread is "GH/RB Ruined Your Music?" not "Videogames Ruined Your Music?". Brutal Legend is not Guitar Hero or Rock Band, so he was not referring to it. And like it was said earlier, Brutal Legend is an amazing game by Tim Schafer that oozes the spirit of metal. Not some casual game that can be found in every house on the block.
So you're saying that the music is the whole point of Brutal Legend, but not of Guitar Hero/Rock Band? The clue's in the fucking titles...

I think Bastille Day and Big Money are two of my favourites, followed closely by The Trees, Force Ten, Free Will, Limelight, Red Sector 'A', Spirit of the Radio and New World Man... hell, I like a ton of Rush. I'm not saying, for a second, that I know all of their songs, because I don't. A while back, my buddy lent me his collection, which was about sixty songs. Just in time, too; I went to Gozo that week and had to stay indoors all day, and the only thing on was Spongebob (literally, the only thing on. It was a Spongebob marathon, and the only other channels were in foreign languages with no subs), so it became invaluable to me when I needed to kill time.

Also, other people in this thread seem to be forgetting people like myself who are motivated to pick up an axe after playing Guitar Hero. I mean, I'd always had a sort of fascination with it, but I'd never really decided to do it until I started playing GH and realised how I'd score with hot babes in no time comfortable I felt with the instrument.

It's also a great way to introduce yourself to some new songs, and, leading from that, new artists. I'd never listened to much Metallica until GH:M, because I'd grown up with a mother who denounced them as fundamentally evil (not in a religious way, she just seems to hate all famous musicians), so I'd not really had a chance.

The final point about GH/RB is that it puts you in control of some of your favourite songs. Alright, don't shit me here, how many people can play the whole of Free Bird and Play With Me and TTFAF all the other awesome songs on the games? Didn't think so. However, GH lets you imagine that you can, and it's *FUN*, hence people do it a lot. For a lot of people, they know they'll never be good enough, or they just don't want to be, they want to have fun and get a chance to listen to (and simulate playing) some kickass music.

tl;dr?

I think you're just being silly, OP. It seems like you thought you were cool because you knew something before it became popular, and now you don't feel so cool because everybody else knows what you knew and is having fun with it. Don't whine, just ignore them if they're talking about it, stop being so goddamn elitist, and get on with your life. It's not that big a deal.

Really.
