I have been doing a piece of science course work about the human mind, and during it we had to look at an 'opinion' and see what kind of people would have it, so i went with the idea of the paranormal, and want to know if anyone on the escapist has opinions (which i know you all will) on the existence of ghosts and other paranormal phenomena, though i am discounting UFO's as they come under extraterrestrial life, and not the paranormal.
I shall get the ball rolling, i believe in ghosts and poltergeists, but not in the religious view of them, and how they are souls, i think they are merely left over energy, possible contained or compact, or just the same strand of a life repeating over and over. Not anything mystical and godly.

I don't believe in ghosts. Also I've seen a ouija board being used once. You know what happened? Fuck all.

I have a firm belief that there is no such thing as ghosts, if you really admit it accepting ghosts is to accept some form of larger plan (a god or some gods) and thats something I dont believe is possible, when you die you are dead, there is no soul or residues, etc. if there truly was some sort of left over when you die why wouldn't the world be packed with ghosts, if there is a time limit who or what sets that limit and why? If there is no limit then there would be far most spirits than people.

Quick version: I ain't afraid of no ghosts.

I dont believe in ghost, i think thats all part of peoples over active imaginations. Im with you though on the fortune telling. From a mathematical stand point everything is probability and we can calculate that quite accurately. So in a sense it is possible to predict a possible even in the near future, of course the amount of variables that would go into such an equation would never be very close to 100% certainty.
you have a fair point, i do have a very over-active imagination :p

while its true most fortune telling can be calculated, my fav form of fortune telling is reading the weather on the horizon, but thats just a fun thing i try and do XD sometimes it works, sometimes it dont

acually, i think that there are more people alive today than all the people from the past put together.

edit: and yes, I believe in ghosts, even if it is just a small imprint left on the universe (like it distorts gravity slightly and therefore messes up time a little)
it gives me a good reason why the shadows in my house move on their own... (as in, across a wall down a corridor with no windows and the only lighting is an energy efficient bulb which probably throws out more light than our favorite local ball of plasma)

then you have to ask yourself: is there something beyond death?
i don't know, and once i do i won't be able to tell you
but i do NOT believe in ghosts. it's the same as the apparitions of the Devil, UFO kidnaps, and other nonsense

Not even close, there are more people alive now than there were at any one time in history but combined?

I don't believe in ghosts because:

1. Every ghost that people 'see' seems to have an amazing backstory, similar to that which people get with past life regressions.
2. There also seem to be substantial time gaps where ghosts are supposed to have come from. i.e. the interesting parts of history. Where are the ghosts of 1980's accountants?
3. Ghosts are used a lot in tourism. Oooh my pub/castle is haunted - come visit. Anne Boleyn for instance is haunting 5 different places if you believe that sort of thing.
4. TV 'ghost hunters'

I don't believe and I have no reason to. There is absolutely no proof of anything paranormal. If I were to ever see anything concrete maybe I would, but until then ghosts go in the same category with fairies, monsters, leprechauns, and Louie Anderson

If supernatural things existed, they'd just be natural phenomena like everything else.

I don't believe ghosts or gods are going to be considered natural phenomena, as they were considered by our ancestors, ever again.

Scientific proof please. I don't rule them out (reality is often stranger than fiction), nor do I 'beleive' in them. I don't beleive in anything concerning reality (I have, ofcourse, moral beleifs, but that's inside my head, reality exists outside my head as well), that includes ghosts. They either exist or do not. My opinion, everyone's opinion, is completely and utterly irrelevant.

i thought that said i don't believe in physics, i was about to flame you and denounce you as a moron.
anyway, i don't believe in ghosts. i think they are just people's imaginations, and the only people that ever see them are the people that want to see them.
and seances and psychics and fortune tellers, all crap. guess work at best, and fairly shoddy guesses at that. although an easy way to scam money from the weak-willed and easily misled.
assuming time is linear it would be impossible to tell the future anyhow, and i believe time is linear.

The only ghosts I believe in are Poltergeist, and I don't think they are the spirits of the deceased.

who wouldnt love worshiping gods that like to throw parties every two seconds and have sex with anything that moved?

I believe they proved that in areas where there are ghost sightings there are anomalies in magnetic fields, background radiation etc. and a whole load of various other things that would affect the brain, tricking it into believing something paranormal was going on.
