Gin = Not manly?

Gin and Tonic, the staple of a British officer back in the day. I'm pretty sure the British military back in its heyday was pretty manly. Also, it is subjective to view a certain liquor as girly or manly since nowadays both sexes readily enjoy all alcohols. My girlfriend enjoys a random ever-clear, while I prefer a more sane alternative and go with a nice smooth scotch or of course a summer delight, Gin and Tonic.

Honestly I'd say gin is more manly than vodka around where i am or of most of the people i know only women drink vodka which is weird but most men stick to your normal scotch whiskey gin rum etc

Ninja'd.

Vodka is alcohol for people who don't like the taste of alcohol -- it doesn't have a very strong flavor, which makes it very easy to cover up by mixing it with something else. Gin is more manly simply on virtue of not being baby's first hard liquor.

Cool, that first one uses the font from Metropolis.

Well the ladies love gin and tonic so I can see the association with it.

And I love how people comment on 40%+ alcohol taste, ofcourse the taste is what we actually drink it for...

So I'm in Taiwan for a bit of work and I've been hanging out with some Scottish visitors. At some point, we started talking about preferred drinks with most of them voting for some mix of vodka. My immediate reaction to the word "Vodka" was blatant disgust and then I told them that I prefer Gin and Tonic or just straight Gin if I was having a bad day.

They told me two things about my preferred alcohol. 1) Gin is a rich/cultured man's liquor 2) Gin is also a girly man's liquor.

Is this a scottish mentality or is Gin generally looked at this way? What are your thoughts on the possible girliness of gin?
Gin is a fabulous drink, ignore the idiots.
It may be a cultured mans drink but you can still use the empty to bottle the neigh sayers.

Gin is awesome, it's my favourite spirit. Gin and Tonic is one of the greatest drinks in the world. But it's got to be quality gin. None of that London's shite. Bombay Sapphire at minimum.
And since I drink it, it is by definition the manliest of drinks.
What Gin has the most quality? I usually get stuck with Tanqueray or Beefeater.
Well, you can't really go wrong with Bombay Sapphire, it's pretty damn good. None of the oily flavours you get with cheaper gin. It's my standard gin whenever I go to buy a bottle.

I've heard good things about Plymouth gin, but I've never seen it for sale in my country. You're American though, you should be able to find it if you want to sample it.

Hendrick's is awesome, but again, really hard to find in Australia. :(

I wouldn't drink Beefeater unless I couldn't find a better one, but that Tanqueray you mentioned is another I've heard good things about but not sampled myself.

Sadly, the best gin I've had was one I can't remember the name of. It was about $100 per bottle. If I were you, I'd probably go with Bombay Sapphire, but whenever a chance came up to sample a different gin you've never had before, try it and see if it's to your taste.
Honestly, Tanqueray has never really disappointed me. Probably the best Gin I've ever had was the Tanqueray Rangpur, which has a special blend of lime and exotic herbs. I didn't even bother mixing it with anything.

I'll have to look into the Bombay Sapphire. The name just makes it sound great.

Here's something funny in regards to extremely bad gin. I once had a gin and tonic made for me at some crappy club-hosted party. At first drink, I thought it was filled with terrible vodka but there was the weakest hint of pine. I had never been so let down by a bartender in my life.

The only words I've seen associated with Gin, is "poison". To me it tastes like death. Maybe it's the caribbean parentage, but I drink mostly rum when it comes to spirits. Well, Tequila too.

You know what? I think that whatever they were drinking is girly. Do you see the problem with this mentality?

How is Gin not manly? It tastes like a lumberyard and was the preferred home-brew of Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce.
No. That's short for 'bathtub gin.' Most likely it was made from potatoes, and/or whatever wheat that semi-respectable army doctors could get their hands on. So that probably includes the grey slop that was served as "corn". Technically the name of what Hawkeye was drinking was "eaugh!" and it was probably more akin to vodka. Gin is made - at least partly - from juniper berries, and is noticeably different from other liquors.

Well... there are some amazingly good (and expensive) tekillyas which I'll ignore for now

Tequila (+worm) without condiments
Scots whiskey (very bitter)
Vodka/Bourbon (tie)
blended whiskeys
Tequila with condiments
Gin
Brandy

To be fair though, there are some pretty brutal liquers(sp?) out there that I'll call brandy-related
I don't want to be unfair to gin, but it does mix well with many things, and often better than vodka does because gin has more fruit to its taste.

Now Zima is a girly drink! If someone were to hydrolyze normal beer, they would end up with Guinness and Zima.

Manliness is overcoming the adversity of what people think of your preferred drink and enjoying it.
I mean seriously? A beverage can be girly? Jesus Chris... I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people are stupid enough to judge others on what they like the taste of...
Pay them no mind, OP. If you like it, just drink it. No point sacrificing your enjoyment for the sake of others.

I thought my vodka/lemonade tasted odd. Then I realized that the bar 'lemonade' was a powder that came in little paper packets. Like wet-naps. Cheers.

I read that and then an image of Dick Dastardly behind a bar wringing wet-naps into a glass of ice and gin popped into my head.

Churchill drank Gin. That guy was awesome, so I think it's in no way a girly man's drink.

Why are these tough Scottish men drinking vodka? About a girly as it gets unless it's ice cold and neat.

Malt Liqour,... Scotch, Rye, Bourbon.

Rum.

Tequila.

Shit... Gin used to be the navel drink of choice before rum became popular.

Vodka's for northern Europeans and girls. The only spirit that's girlier is Bacardi.

That got a laugh out of me, thanks.

OP: I don't drink alcohol, and not just because I'm not legally allowed to. So by that standard you're at least manlier than I am.
