Is it any wonder people are risking their lives to get out of that miserable country.
Yes, the US is a bastion of non-misery.

I'd also agree that this sort of thing is hardly uncommon. A few months ago in the US, a 10 or 11 year old girl was gang-raped, the judge blamed her for dressing and acting like a 20 year old, and the community cried out in despair at how their men/boys have had their lives ruined by this terrible event. If it wasn't for the last two points, it probably wouldn't have been newsworthy.
If you're going to have an example as to how Mexico is more miserable than the US, you need to find something more extreme than pregnant ten year olds.

I've been to Mexico before to help my father in a medical clinic. Saw a 14 year old girl 8 months pregnant. Her sister, who was 17, had a 2 year old child. Somehow, I'm not as shocked by this news as I wish I were
I'm from Michigan, and when I was in middle school in your average middle class Midwestern town, we had a pregnant girl in my grade. 8th grade, and my "ex" (even if it was the middle school type of girlfriend that maybe once held hands or something). She wasn't even old for her grade or anything, just an 8th grader that had consensual-but-stupid sex with her next boyfriend (I sure avoided THAT bullet...) and then went through with the pregnancy.

...WHAT?!?! And the age of consent is 12?!?!?

...I wanna stab something now.
I don't necessarily see a problem with that. It's certainly not as bad as many Middle Eastern countries, For one, it's Mexico, so we shouldn't expect, well, anything decent about their laws or government, but for two, I imagine their law makes it still illegal for people in positions of authority and direct relatives to have sex with younger people, and it would still make coercive sex, blackmail, and actual abuse illegal. Plus depending on the wording it could still make sex illegal if the parents were opposed.

Still, yeah, holy shit is that messed up, especially the bit about not being allowed an abortion unless you were raped, and especially since it was a goddamn 10 year old.

Age of consent in Canada is 14, technically. We have this thing where, if you're 14, you can have sex with someone 4 or 5 years older than you. Its a bit weird, but our actual age of consent in 16.

Seriously, am I the only person on this site who's old and jaded enough not to be fazed by this story?

A lot of stuff isn't socially acceptable but happens on a daily basis anyway. It's not a sign of impending armageddon, it's just crazy ol' human nature.

Besides, the notion that sex under the age of 16/18 is unnatural is a fairly new one. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is 13 and Romeo is somewhere around 15 or 16. In most civilisations, girls have tended to be seen as sexually viable as soon as they reach puberty. Why do we automatically assume that this 10-year old MUST have been the victim of a drug-addled gang-rape at the hands of gorillas, and the whole sordid affair is a damning reflection of how morally bankrupt Mexicans are... it could have just been two young kids experimenting sexually and nature taking its course?

But, silly me, reactionary moral outrage is more satisfying.
No, not alone. There was another poster on page one as well.

Also, its funny how strongly people react to this. Same country is being ravaged by what by now is pretty much a civil war and people point to this incident (and the 12age consent) as the reason why it sucks to live in mexico.

Some perspective wouldnt go a miss here.

I didn't know a female could reproduce at age 10...

Okay than... According to wiki, a 5 year old gave birth once.
I take claims on Wiki with a grain of salt when it isnt something big. I highly doubt a 5 year old could give birth, considering at that age, females dont produce eggs.

Now a 10 year old could. Females go through puberty earlier than males, and puberty is never a really set age. Females can go though puberty as early as 10, depending on many different factors. Females dont produce eggs until puberty, this is also when periods start because the body is producing eggs.

And an age of consent of 12 is just wrong IMO. Arkansas many years ago had an age of consent of 13, and i thought that was bad.

I would put my money on a rape, or molestation, that happened inside the family on this one. If i were the attorney general, all males of the family would be my first suspects.
That little girl was real.

And was alive as of 2004.

I thought everyone was aware that mexico has a lower rate of consent, so I guess the real news of the article is a ten year old had a kid.

...

But even then, the real real news of the article will be if the kid (either of them, though I guess the newborn to be specific) survives.

EDIT:

i think it's technically possible to be born pregnant, i heard a story once of a guy being born with a twin, in his lung tissue and had to have it removed later in life due to problems
( nobody knew it was there, and randomly it started growing )

...
I must be a horrible person cause the first thing I thought of was the alien seen where it burst out of the guy's chest.

Though I imagined something more wrong like the guy from Venture Brothers when the Monarch was on trial and the lawyer was actually the fetus twin on the guy's chest.

Still this is something that can happen especially now given that the chemicals in our food has been speeding up the growth process.
Myth. Societal pressures affect things like female puberty and fetal gender selection far more than hormones and chemicals in food.
Waaah? I don't even understand how that is supposed to work but I can understand steroids changing someone's body because that happens all the time and those were the types of chemicals I was referring too.
Puberty has been becoming younger for as long as we have been recording it.

That pace has however gotten quicker in the last century, particularily for girls.

Hormones in food/water is suspected by some, but its unproven.

Another suspected cause is that fat cells make female hormones so the fact that more girls are overweight at a younger age very year may be contributing to earlier onset of puberty in some girls.

Others think is just the change in nutrition (in otherwords, the kids aren't staving to death so they mature earlier).

The same questions are asked about why every generation is taller, particularily the last 40ish years worth of kids.
Hm that is some interesting stuff. I wonder if there's a documentary that covers this subject.

12? 12?

Fuck Mexico. That's just plain wrong. Must be a paedophiles paradise.
That makes sense. Generalise about an entire country based off one case. If one 10 year old girl gets pregnant there, then the place is just full of pedophiles.
