I'm from Michigan, and when I was in middle school in your average middle class Midwestern town, we had a pregnant girl in my grade. 8th grade, and my "ex" (even if it was the middle school type of girlfriend that maybe once held hands or something). She wasn't even old for her grade or anything, just an 8th grader that had consensual-but-stupid sex with her next boyfriend (I sure avoided THAT bullet...) and then went through with the pregnancy.

Three girls were knocked up at the movie theater in the town I live in (also in Michigan) a few years ago. Had the kids and stayed in school I think, because my crappy town has a ridiculously high amount of teenage mothers and we just aren't surprised by it anymore. It really is sad.

OT: This is horrible and I feel sorry for that girl because I'm betting that it was not consensual. (Then again, could any 10 year old really consent at all? I know I couldn't at 10.) Makes me shake my head in disgust. Children shouldn't be having children!

I take claims on Wiki with a grain of salt when it isnt something big. I highly doubt a 5 year old could give birth, considering at that age, females dont produce eggs.

Now a 10 year old could. Females go through puberty earlier than males, and puberty is never a really set age. Females can go though puberty as early as 10, depending on many different factors. Females dont produce eggs until puberty, this is also when periods start because the body is producing eggs.

And an age of consent of 12 is just wrong IMO. Arkansas many years ago had an age of consent of 13, and i thought that was bad.

I would put my money on a rape, or molestation, that happened inside the family on this one. If i were the attorney general, all males of the family would be my first suspects.

There is actually a disease that accelerates the puberty stage, I believe its called Precocious puberty.

I have obviously misread the title.
I wasn't all that interested till I re read it today and realised what it actually said.

OT:This in my opinion is disgusting. I'm not normally a prude or anything like that but at age 10 you shouldn't even be thinking about sex. When I was ten I barely understood it.
Really I can only think of one way that she could have got pregnant and that is someone older forced her into having sex. That is not a nice thought.

Really this shows why the age of consent is older in other places. It's because the body has a lot of difficulty with it and a 10 year old can't handle it. She came in having seizures.
Think about it. A 10 year old is still quite a small human and then they have another human growing inside them.

Why? What makes 16 special?

Hell, there are arguments to make it 21, and traditionally 12 was a pretty common cutoff for centuries. The cutoff point is totally arbitrary. Certainly the defintition of paedophilia requires it be pre onset of puberty, and puberty onset hits girls as young as 9 these days.

I think what you meant to say is given your cultural background it makes you uncomfortable.

I would say it really depends on the age gap. I think once you're 18 anything goes, really. Something doesn't sit well with me about a sixteen year old and a 40 year old doing the deed, so that's why I'd put it as the very minimum. Sixteen is, as you stated, the minimum in my country. However, I sure as hell wouldn't want my 16 year old running off with someone twice their age. I wouldn't want my 18 year old doing it either, but the way kids are brought up nowadays... well, they really are prepared for life by 18. I wouldn't be okay with it, but I'd know it was their choice.
