I'm not even sure what a hipster is but rest assured that I've never met anybody, ever, who wears glasses when they don't have to. Unfortunately.
Hipsters:
But all those people look different from each other.
It's kind of an umbrella term.

"Hipsters are the friends who sneer when you cop to liking Coldplay. They're the people who wear t-shirts silk-screened with quotes from movies you've never heard of and the only ones in America who still think Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good beer. They sport cowboy hats and berets and think Kanye West stole their sunglasses. Everything about them is exactingly constructed to give off the vibe that they just don't care."

That's a better definition than I can give.

I like to wear tshirts and jeans every day, no makeup, hair in a ponytail. Every single day.

But to impress people I put on eyeliner and wear my hair down. It never fails to get a reaction.

I like people who have style and dress themselves rather than buy an entire outfit from a mannequin

Speaking as to what I see other girls wear? I've never, quote NEV-ER, understood the strange habit of going out at any hour of the day or nite in sweat pants and flip-flops. I see other girls out in this and I just wonder if it's laundry day today or something. Nothing else clean maybe? But then, and this also leads into the other thing I've never understood, they've got all these expensive name-brand sweats they wear, generally Aeropostale, Abercrombie or some Victoria's Secret wear with that gorfy PINK across the duff. I just don't get it. Sure, they're comfy and all but... *shrugs* Meh.
Dammit, the other day I had unfortunately found myself at the mall and I happened to see this rotund, middle aged female with a pair of those 'PINK' sweats on. Was awful, like two virginia hams with cloves mashed together, the I and the N smooshed together betwixt ungainly buttocks. . . ugh. I feel a bout of spontaneous blindness coming on.
*chuckles* To quote Lo Wang "Maybe if I close eyes, it'll go away". *laughs*

That doesn't make any sense either. What's the connection between any one of the things in that list, and any other of the things in that list? They're all things that shouldn't matter to anybody else except the person making those decisions to drink that beer or wear those sunglasses or whatever. What's beer taste got to do with "not caring" about whatever the unspecified thing is that they supposedly don't care about?

From the Time quote, plus the image selection you've given, "hipster" to me seems to be a derogatory word like "******" except that you can apply it to anyone for any reason whatsoever. Don't like the band I like? You're a hipster. Wear a shirt I think looks stupid? Oh, you're a hipster. Drink the wrong beer? Must be a hipster. It just seems like dumb prejudice to me, no better than sexism or racism, just slightly more "flexible".

As a girl, I always, and I mean always wear jeans and a t-shirt. Generally with a hoodie and trainers. That's pretty much my entire wardrobe. And it's mostly black. It's comfortable, normally cheap and I think it looks cool. Oh, and my hat of couse. I'm always wearing a hat of some description be it baseball cap, trilby or beanie. I feel naked without it.

I don't really dress up...ever. I can't stand the dressed up look. Hate skirts, hate dresses, hate make-up, hate high heels. If other girls want to wear it then good for them, but I wouldn't touch it with a 30 foot pole. My idea of dressing up is slightly smarter jeans and possibly a blouse if I can't wear a shirt. Anything more and I feel uncomfortable and completely ridiculous. Go slobishness!

As for guys, it doesn't really bother me what they wear. As long as they like it, they can wear whatever they want. Although I admit, I do find full length black leather coats very sexy.

It's a term to describe a type of style and interest. It's the same as describing someone as goth, punk, nerdy, preppy etc... It's a label or a social catagory, a stereotype? Yes. All stereotypes aren't necessarily derogatory and inflammatory though.

It's not necessarily derogatory, only if you chose to use it that way. Certain groups pick on nerds, certain groups pick on goths and so on, it works the same way for hipsters. Some of the main prejudices people have against hipsters is that they put alot of effort into looking like they don't care, wear glasses without lenses or only read a particular type of literature, such as the classics, or watch a certain type of film, usually low budget and independant.

It's not as serious as the way you seem to be interpreting it.

Whatever she's comfortable in for the most part, though I would argue against the need for an excess of make up/tanning lotion (seriously, what's wrong with a bit of pale? Do not want oompa loompa) or overtly revealing clothing (makes the subsequent removal all the more rewarding, see?)

But yea, generally, what she likes and feels good in. Steve likes a confident girl.

"Don't care" about what, exactly? Obviously they care about something otherwise why would they have preferences for certain types of literature or film? Assuming those things are even true?

Anyway, glasses without lenses (gosh coming full-circle back on topic here) aren't any more useless than say, earrings.

Modern trends, popular clothing or fads. That they don't pay attention to what society dictates should be fashionable at the time. Ironically enough, it's a fairly popular social trend but stereotypically they love irony so they...AH!

Personal preference I suppose.
I'd feel a little silly in them but, then again, glasses don't particularly suit me anyway.

This thread is very sexist, why are we asking different questions of the guys than the girls? How come girls get "looked at" here and guys don't?
That's what i was thinking...

I think female fashion depends on the girl in question. Some girls can create a very "sexy sophisticated" look if they are slimly built, have short hair and wear glasses. Other, less slim girls may wear jeans or a reasonably low cut top if it would suit them.

I do notice some girls put quite a bit of thought into their clothes and have quite a unique and original look, and i can like them for that- so long as they don't take it to the point of looking strange, but from my experience most girls don't.

Personally, i like skirts and opaque or coloured tights on women, glasses can be nice as well, and a subtle but not too obvious gothic style as well.

I like girls in skinny-ish jeans and any type of top but preferably with cleaveage:)

edit: I guess for balance, I don't really wear anything special for a girl, I will go with what I usually do, Jeans and a t-shirt/shirt.

But they obviously do care, because isn't hipsterism a popular trend?

I'm still not convinced that hipsters even exist at all. I think one day someone who was jealous of someone else's fashion sense just made up a bunch of bullshit and it stuck, and it's now become a stick that people can use to beat up others that they perceive (correctly or not) as more culturally savvy than themselves so then they can feel a bit better about their own inferiority complexes.

Glasses suit everyone! Just gotta find the right frames.

I generally just wear anything that enhances my curves. On a normal day it would be tight t-shirts, maybe a hoodie, and jeans or leggings. Going out would be a shortish tight dress preferably one shouldered.

They do, of course, but the charicature is that they try exceedingly hard to appear as though they don't.
I don't think it's something that should be taken too seriously really.

Hmmm... maybe. I tried on a friend's glasses once and her advice was, "Don't go blind". I would've been upset if it hadn't been so funny.

Female.

I just wear jeans, t-shirts, and an old pair of hand-me-down skate shoes I've had for about 7 years. I hardly dress up at all unless it's a special occasion. My husband and I wear the same size shirts, so we share gamer/funny shirts, and that cuts down on the wardrobe. I don't usually wear make-up. It's expensive, and not exactly the best thing to put on your face. My husband likes a completely natural look, so it's a double-whammy.

As for what I like to see my other wearing, just jeans,t-shirts, and shoes. Sometimes he wears Dickies. Just casual and comfortable.
