Tyranids aren't playable? This MMO is already dead to me.
Might change my mind when an expansion comes out though.
Really now... how the hell should you balance that race? Synapse range is a must have for the Tyranids, and if you are proposing that you should play as a synapse creature. Read your lore sir, a Carnifex could easily kill a squad of eight shock troopers alone.
Genestealers don't need synapse creatures(I think), and neither do Warriors. Doesn't seem too hard to balance them.

A Massively Multiplayer Online game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe is currently in development, according to reports. The game will be announced officially at E3 in June of this year, where more information may hopefully be gleaned for the game.

However, until then, a list of possible features has been released, which includes

Playable factions:
?Imperium
?Eldar
?Orks
?Chaos

Features:
?Focus both on Melee and Long range Combat
?Covering system
?29 Zones (21 claimable, 8 invadeable)
?Open-World
?PvP around resource gathering and taking strategic points
?Center zone features a conquerable stronghold
?No playable Tanks or other Warmachines at release but implemented possibility for expansion
?Tyranids as full fighting PvE-Faction
Let's see where this leads us. I'm not an MMO person (I only played Warhammer Online, and even then for a short while), but I'm on record as saying that the one MMO I'd play would be a 40K one. Seems like I'll have to make good on what I said.

Pax Imperialis.
I just don't think it'll work. I like the 40k universe (Like, not am obsessed with), even though it rarely makes much sense, but I just can't imagine a game devoted to single-person control over vast armies will translate well into single-person control over single-soldier. They'll have to think long and hard about how it'll work.

Then again, allowing people to wear chaos/space marine armor would be a dream come true for most fans, so it's not like there ain't a market.

No..no.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO -Ad infinitem-

Seriously, I've played 40K for years, and this, this is news ive been dreading since Age of Reckoning, possibly even before... Dont get me wrong in a perfect world where developers listened, and idiots who destroy game atmostphere or balance... or even common sense, didnt exist in a player demographic, I'd be totally for a 40K MMO, but no, personally i dont want to see the eldar reduced to "space elves" I mean the thing that almost balanced 40K, in its table top form and video game form was numbers, if the imperial force equalled the eldar force on numbers, they always lost, hence eldar were a dying race.... we've all seen sying races introduced to MMO's before, they quickly outnumber everything else, do YOU want to play as a half witted human with a glorified flashlight and a baynoett, while an ork boy shows you the error of your race choice via giant axe?

Oh hell, they'll screw this up somehow. The Space Marines will either be over powered or under powered, the orks wont have the right vibe, Eldar will be unbalanced and I dont even want to imagine what they will do with Chaos.

Why does everything we love have to be twisted and perverted into an MMO? I played Warhammer Online and it sucked - they had twisted the lore and landscape to their own ends like silly putty. Ugh, It'll be a long time before I manage to get the taste of that game out my mouth - I had traded in my gamecube and all its games for it and it and it wasnt worth it, not even close.

What World of Warcraft did is incredible, but it also had the undesired effect of spawning an entire industry of failed mmo experiments. Granted there are some good ones, but only one out of 10 or 20. *sigh* Oh well.

Ya know what I would love to see from Games Workshop? A Necromunda MMORPG
Necromunda would make more sense but I think you and I are the only two people who remember it.
The 5 other people who quoted me saying it was a good idea would disagree with that.
Then I guess this is as good as any time to tell you that I have multiple personality disorder.

I have hope for this, but I think it'll be really damn hard to make any good.

I'll still play it though. FOR THE DARK GODS

Same issue as my personal favourite, Tyranids. No individuality or character-building.

I think Space Marine should be in it, but not as a starting character. You could start of as a basic human Guardsman and once you get high level/rank enough you unlock some sort of side quest that lets you train to join a Space Marine chapter.

I think the idea of a W40k MMO could be really good, then again it could be awful. I';; keep and eye of how this progresses.
Unfortunately that would go against the fluff. Guardsmen are too old to start Astartes training, as it takes a very young person to withstand the implants.
Hrm, I wonder if it would be possible for a Whiteshield to be drafted into the Astartes?

i would like to see necrons in this but that's just wishful thinking
Warhammer 40k might work as a MMOFPSRPG type of thing though but i'm curious of how they'll balance everthing out..
Edit: Also some necrons still have a miniscule ammount of personality it's realy only the Pariahs and the Necron lord that have it

They all know necromunda (all except Sally) but they don't all love it. Some of them prefer Gorkamorka.

It would make more sense physicaly, since they would be at around the same age most recruits are inducted into the Astartes trials.

But still, there would be a problem. Space Marine chapters recruit from specific planets, and no chapter recruits from Cadia.

I'm both looking forward to this and utterly dreading it, sooo many ways a 40k mmorpg can be messed up D:

For the record, I'd prefer it if Space Marines were NOT included at all except as uber super friendly or enemy NPCS, this way sm can remain a powerful but rare force, if sm are playable I guarantee you every kid under the age of 16 will pick them and sm with names like "badbwoy93" or "xxsniperproxx" will be commonplace D:

Imperials have plenty of player possibilities without sm, really no need to drag them in ><

You don't enjoy the heroics of the normal human soldier, the unenhanced fighting man or woman in a galaxy of unimaginable horrors and unspeakably powerful foes, relying on nothing more then a flak jacket, a lasgun and faith to prevail?

Yes, I love being an easily expendable soldier that my own squad leader might kill just to "inspire" my teammates. Basic human rights and treatment is for suckers.

This game needs Necrons. And Tau.

A lot of the ideas behind this game sound like the ones that were hovering around Asheron's Call 2 what with the "constant fighting over reasources" bit... and we all know what happened to THAT MMO.

Hopefully a Warhammer 40K MMO is ground-breaking and fun and not another "kill/collect 20 random things for me for a meaningless reward and a learning experience" level grind.

LESS LEVELING, MORE FOCUS ON A SMALLER, MORE USEFUL CLASS-BASED SKILLSET DEVELOPERS.

And melta-bombs. No solution is ever complete without metla-bombs.

I don't enjoy the heroics of a squad of men sent to die, and killed if they refuse. It's why the space marines are so kickass. They're not just thrown at huge numbers at the enemy to get slaughtered, they're used intelligently and their commanders do what they can to help them survive for the next battle.

Well, yeah. I'd imagine Cadia can't spare the manchildpower. I forget the name for the term for non-Cadian Guardsmen children, though.

It all depends on the Commanding officer. Some hurl wave after wave of cannon fodder at the enemy while others, such as Colonel Commissar Guant use their troops properly and with far greater success. Saying all Imperial Guardsmen are nothing more then meat shields for the man behind is like saying all Space Marines are eternally loyal. Besides no man who died in His service died in vain :p

Also in regard to human rights and decent treatment this is the Imperium we're talking about: a hellish theocratic/Fascist uncaring nation based on the most rascist and brutal religious rule ever which needs this system of rule to survive when surrounded by monsters, daemons and aliens and wracked from within by traitors, rebels and malcontents. Giving everything a hug and a warm cup of tea and telling them its ok if they don't feel like giving their lives for the continued existence of the human race just isn't going to work!
