I can honestly say I've had my xbox since the beginning. I got it a week after it debuted into the world and while all my friends xbox's got the infamous red ring of death mine was still kicking ass. I was really proud of the little old guy, never froze, never lagged (a lot anyway) just kept going, sometimes four to five hours even.

But alas, not more than an hour ago, I went to play it again and this time it never came on. Like a person who dies peacefully in their sleep, my 360 would never wake again *sigh and sob*

So good-bye friend, while we will never play games like bioshock 2 or the latest madden together, or going on killing sprees online to all the noobs in MewTwo, I will still have all the fond memories from the yester years. Farewell.

...

On a lighter note, those new 360 elites are pretty cool, with bigger harddrives and colored black, plus there cheaper than their former consoles. So in a way I'm saying good-bye to an old friend but then turning around to date his younger sister. YAY!

I too have to say goodbye to my 360... but I worked it to death within one week of over 11 hours of gaming nearly straight. once christmas break came around. But i had just gotten the 360 like 2 months ago.
so while I can't say it's not my fault, I'm still a little angry about it.

Your xbox was a fine console. It is to noble to deserve a normal funeral. We'll give it a Viking funeral. I'll get the boat and the torches.

Mine never failed till my nephew ruined the disc drive... Jerk.

It still works though! It just needs a new disc drive.

Sorry.

I have mine for almost 5 years now, never died on me yet. It still has to survive another year before I probably have to part with it forever anyway. Stay strong little one, you can do it!

One should not call a four-year-old piece of electronic equipment that fails an "old friend". It does an injustice to my fall-2000 launch-day PS2 and my 1992-issue SNES that still continue to get the job done...or even to my 2006-issue gaming PC that still kicks the ass of most modern games even on medium-high settings and never misses a beat.

Your 360 was a freakish piece of engineering. And for that alone, I salute it. *Slautes*
Now, if only mine lasted that long...

...wait, the 360 can't handle 11hrs gaming in one go?

Effing hell. I ran my PS2 for 4 days non-stop with Final Fantasy and it was absolutely fine. Are the consoles of this generation that poorly cooled? If so I may re-think dropping several hundred quid on one!

That any my PS2 has taken a trip down a flight of stairs and ironically functioned better after it's "adventure" than it did before (but it busted the controller pretty badly).

jacobschndr It's a shame the console died after working so well for so long. Was it not fixable at all (I've heard the power supply goes after a while, and it's an easy swap)?

My husband knocked my PS2 off a two foot high table and it broke, it even resisted two £50 repair jobs! One of those things. My son's door came off it's hinges one day it's fall was broken by his Gamecube, result? The door was never the same again (had a big dent) the Gamecube continued to work perfectly.
I have played on my 360 for many hours a day several days in row on many occasions and it just powers through.
OP, I am with the PP who suggested a good old Viking funeral.... You 360 was a warrior among consoles!

Yeah, viking funeral!
My 360 got RROD-ed 6 months after it's 2008 purchase. I got it fixed, let's see how much longer it lasts.
My 8 bit NES? Switches on first time, every time. It's sad we consider 5 years to be a long time for an appliance to work nowadays.

That's the same thing my Playstation did. I miss it dearly.
