Jurassic 5, Murs, mc chris, and Rakim are some to start you off with. I'm not that big on rap, but those guys just rock no matter what.

As a hip hop artist, and someone who has an appreciation of all music genres I find this type of comment highly closed minded. You probably haven't listened to much more hip hop then what's played on TV and in popular media in general. There is a big difference between real 'hip hop' (Atmopshere, POS, Brother Ali, Talib Kwali Bliss N Eso) and "pop rap/RnB" (Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Flo Rida, anything autotune..). The fact that you would blatantly discount a whole range of genres just with no explanation of why just show your ignorance. If you don't have anything to contribute to the discussion they you probably should just stay out of it and keep your opinions to yourself.
Firstly of all, it's just MY opinion, and many other musicians share the same opinion if you didn't notice it. And no, I don't blatantly discount it for no reason, I just don't find anything special about it. Sorry if I did offend you, as I didn't really intend it, it's just that, well I don't like those genres that I mentioned. There may be some that may be good, but I doubt it. Also I live in a place where people DO listen to that music, a HUGE lot, and that for me is annoying. And secondly, aren't actually opinions to be said and discussed in places like this?
Oh course they are. And I was just expressing my opinion on the topic too. My main issue was that on a thread regarding some who wanted advice (about something you said you dislike and knew little about), and you decided to use it as a chance to try to discredit the object of discussion. It just seemed to me (though you have stated otherwise) that your comment intended to spark controversy, rather then contribute to the discussion.
Being a musician too, I know how passionate you probably are about your chosen genre of music. I also know that we could go on and on with an argument about what sort of music is better, and that all we would accomplish would be sore voices from yelling and no progress on the issue at all.
What sorts of hip hop have you listened to? I'm making it my goal to find you some within the genre that you might like. (And I know there will be something! I used to hate metal until someone showed me all the different sub-genres out there, now Fear Factory is in the most played list on my iPod!)
Cannot remember, because I never payed attention, so sorry, I don't know. But yes, I have listened a lot of times, specially when coming home, since many people listen to it in the bus. Unfortunately, it's not good music. If you are interested in what other music genres I like, that would be Instrumental, Classic, most of all types of Metal (particularity Symphonic, Heavy and somewhat Death Metal), Progressive, Industrial, and some that I cannot really say in which genre it would apply. I'm sure that it's some type of hip hop that I may like, however I doubt that I will find it anytime soon. Also, I though the same thing about you in the discussion. Also i though for while you wanted to heavily discuss, like it's normally with most people. However, I do respect other likes of people, I think I didn't make it clear enough in my first post. Are you a DJ or something like that, or/and you specialize/know to play another instrument?
I myself play piano and flute, and many family members play other instruments, like cello, accordion, organ, etc. However we live very far apart (in the continental level) so we haven't met many times.

I'm glad thats cleared up, I don't want to be starting arguments for the sake of it. I might suggest you should take a look at the album "A Healthy Distrust" by Sage Francis. His style comes more from a spoken word/poetry background and terns to take a very satirical approach to the issues raised within the tracks.
I am a solo emcee at the moment, though I have taken part in group projects and collaborations too. In terms of instruments I can play a piano if I concentrate on it. (I know how to, but usually do everything music based on computer with a standard keyboard and a touchpad) I normally make my music digitally (creating sounds as well as sampling from existing material), and are fluent with most music production suites. I'm definitely not a DJ though and you couldn't pay me to be one!

Two of my favorites that haven't been mentioned so far (at least I don't think) are:

Digable Planets

and Jeru the Damaja

Edit: Oh, and it seems like The Roots haven't been mentioned too much yet.

Contrary to what a certain user (*cough* fluffybacon *cough cough*)thinks of them. i think Insane Clown Posse or Twiztid are some good groups.
Aren't you too snooty for them? :p

The Great Milenko reminds me of my rebelious youth. I love their dating game spoof. How about 35 bucks an hour. Thats from a different album, though. I know that stupid song by heart and can rap it on cue.
God help me I can still rap half the Neden Game x.x

OT: Eminem is on the top of my list, but the swearing is a little much.

Then of course, there's the nerdcore: MC Chris, MC Frontalot, Ultraklystron, and YTCracker. Good stuff, great beats, and not too much swearing.

Sage Francis is pretty awesome too. This song has a bit of swearing (and some very graphic sexual imagery), but it's got a wonderful feel and the wordplay is amazing.

As for actual examples here are a few you could look at

Thankfully none of the crap that MTV and BET usually play. That crap is an insult.

As a musician, I consider rap, hip hop and reggae some VERY bad music genres, and some other musicians don't even consider them to be music at all, just rubbish. I think Eminem could be something interesting for you, but unfortunately I don't even know any other, and as I said, I consider them the lowest music genre.
Since when do musicians not like Reggae? And this kind of ignorance is what is preventing music from growing.

Anyways, for some good Hip Hop you don't have too look further than Buck 65. Sage Francis has been mentioned a few times here as well, which is good to see.

Anyway, on topic, Eminem is awesome. Try Stan, Without Me and Deja Vu.
Stan is pretty excellent, and a lot of Eminem's earlier stuff is catchy and/or intriguing. (Compelling?)
His newer stuff certainly has a catchy lyrical quality to it.

Mos Def is good and so is Busdriver. You should also look up MF Doom and his various alter egos, he is great
This is truth.

Also? Nobody has mentioned Coolio's "Gangster's Paradise". Yes, it's part homage to Stevie Wonder. But you know what? It's part homage to Stevie Wonder.

2.Thought-provoking lyrics. Not everything has to be a zen riddle, but I'd prefer messages more complex than "I got drunk and beat my girlfriend", since I really have no interest in the faux-gangsta lifestyle some singers portray.
I know that quite a few people have already mentioned him but Sage Francis really does fit this catagory perfectly. I would suggest starting with his album Personal Journals and go from there. He's also very good live if you like that kind of thing.

And I know you mentioned that you are not a fan of swearing but Plan B also fits under the story telling catagory,(Have a listen to 'tough love') although I would suggest listening to his FIRST album who needs actions when you have words rather than his latest one which is a lot more mainstream and watered down. (which is fine as he said he wanted to do something different and he did, nothing wrong with that)

I hope you find what you are looking for, I personally have found a few nice new bands/artists myself due to some of the other posters in this thread so thank you kindly everyone ^^

I'm personally not that big of a hiphop fan, but I do have one suggestion:

Kyteman's hiphop orchestra

It's a pretty new Dutch group that combine's hiphop, with English and sometimes French lyrics, with actual music instead of computer-generated beats for a change! I think there are like 8 different MC's, all backed up by a small orchestra and led by mister Colin "Kyteman" Benders. He incidentally whips out his trumpet for a solo or whatever. They have won numerous awards here now, mostly because of their awesome live-perfomances. The video's just don't really do them justice :p
Anyway, on to the good stuff:

Official site:
http://www.kyteman.com/

Youtube:
City is burning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duyw6asVi50&feature=related (0:58 to skip the Dutch intro)

U-town university:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5JrdbhxgSY (I study there!)

Blow the whistle on 'em:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r24N9_U1tJg&feature=related (no instruments used, pure vocals/beatbox)

Sorry:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjhF6S6UUGI&feature=related (instrumental song)

Also, I'm sorry for the bad quality of some video's. But we can't all have HD camera's.

Well, Public Enemy, NWA, Run DMC were all awesome.

I'm liking Swollen Members quite a bit at the minute, especially Dark Clouds.

First of all, I did not intended to make a flame war, so sorry if it may seem. other person also did the same thing as you, but we understand each other in the end. Anyway, actually a lot of musicians do not like Reggae since a long time, at least the one that is made in our country. It remind me (and I'm sure some people do) to sex, drugs and killing. And yet they say Marilyn Manson music is not good. And I live in a place where they DO listen to that music. The point is that I just don't like it, and no, this is not going to stop music from growing. There are a huge lot of subgenres that people do love, and so do I. And many people do not care much for our opinion. Anyway, sorry if I did bother you with my comment, I didn't really intended to

Hilltop Hoods are great. Their best album is definitly The Hard Road.
This is one of their best tracks.
