I can't believe that so many people are retarded enough to take this seriously and respond with a lot of technical reasons as to why they think its stupid when it was obviously just meant to be funny.

allot of thing,s are done by YOU the player! you lunatic!
the only thing that can point to a form of mental retardation is that he always smashes boards/crates and never pries them even though he uses a crowbar.
And how people treat him. And the not talking. Seriously, even if there was nothing else, never talking is either a sign of him being a mute or having mental problems. Or kicking ass in the longest game of "don't break the sugar bowl" ever, I guess.
or maybe he simply doesn't want to talk.

Better question why can't a theoretical/quantum physicist be retarded?
Stephen Hawking isn't retarded his body is just crapping out on him.

Well, he was hit in the head a few times in Black Mesa...
Still one of the most badass characters in video gaming though.

The Idle Thumbs podcast and their listeners (long live the Idle Thumbs) had a take on this subject. They reached the conclusion that Gordon Freeman is actually just a mute sociopathic killer. He crawls around in airducts and sewers filled with radioactive alien goo, bashing skulls in with his crowbar. He's propably always covered in blood, brains and guts, and carries weapons all the time, and when people see him walking around they just act all cool and friendly to not piss this intimidating person off and cause him to go on another killing spree.

For example, a regular person might see the importance of telling other people about the mysterious omnipresent businessman who seems to have not only interest in the survival of Gordon, Alyx and other people, but who surely has a deeper agenda as well.

Or, another example, in Episode 2 when the player, Gordon, sees one of those Hunter alien killer robots and Alyx asks something along the lines "What was that? Did you hear that?", a person who has interest in the well-being of other people near him maybe should've said "I saw a killer robot stalking us, be careful". Instead, Gordon says nothing and
Alyx gets stabbed

They speculated that in Episode 3 with the inevitable Source engine updates you can see the beads of nervous sweat on the other characters' face and the fear in their eyes when you're around. Also, in a turning point of the story, Gordon takes control and the player can only watch as his gloved hands reach forward and commit an unimaginable act of violence on one of the familiar characters.

Aren't most intelligent people mentally disabled anyway?
Many past geniuses had Dyslexia or ADD.

Whoa whoa hoss......

they are not disabilities.
I have ADHD and Asperger's syndrome, and am therefore considered by all academic instituitions to be mentally disabled, no matter how much better I seem to do than the average person.

No, he's not. But since you're the one doing these things maybe you should be worried.

And the Courier from fallout NV is a Telepath because he doesn't use his hands to pick up objects, or open doors, And he doesn't have a voice, he just projects words into people minds instead of talking.

Actually 90% of that was your doing, so wanna start again on who is mentally disabled? :p
Last time I checked, 4/9 is 44.4444444%, not 90% :)
I was referring to the gameplay, the one that really shines through is the player and his character.
I know what you were referring to, but it certainly wasn't 90%, even if we weight them based on how much they affected my view. The only one that really "shines through" for me is the not talking.
Hmm, I wonder...

After playing Half-Life 2, I noted several things about my Gordon Freeman:

1-He jumps on top of tables and other things that would be considered socially deviant
2-He throws peoples' things (like computers) around like a madman
3-He runs around hitting everything with a crowbar to see if it will break or not
4-He is never certain whether an object will break or not when he hits said object
5-He hits people in the head with a crowbar if he gets bored with what they're saying
-He is talked down to by other scientists
-He is referred to as "Mister Freeman" and sarcastically as "Doctor Freeman"
-He is complimented on throwing a switch and has a scientist act like he was actually contributing
-He never speaks
I count 5 things you are doing, and 4 things he is doing. You just claimed that 4/9 is your doing. A person who can't count to 5 is accusing someone of being a retard? By your logic more than half of the points that make him a retard is your doing.
It's quite possible that he's just unable to talk, or maybe he would talk if the superior being taking control of his body weren't making him hit someone with a crowbar? Also there's the good old saying. "It's better to keep your mouth shut and be assumed to be an idiot rather than opening it obliterating all doubt". Metroid Other M proved this to a perfection.
Still, I think Gordon Freeman doesn't talk for the same reason Link doesn't:
<youtube=6zg_WE7N3p4&NR=1>

Yeah, the trauma caused by witnessing this game made many game characters unable to talk, the worst case was Animal Crossing where they had to rely on subtitles to be understood while they made sounds they only thought were words. A tragedy indeed...

Thats a funny way to see things, but considering its the players who make him do these things, then does that mean were mentally challenged? xD

...Wow, I seriously respect him now.
I'm going to go actually play through Half life 2 to aid this disabled yet brilliant and heroic man!

How could a theoretical/quantum physicist be retarded? and i know your going to say thats because he is a "theoretical" physicist, but no he is not like Fantastic in Fallout: New Vegas, Gordon Freeman is far better than that scrotum muncher. The reason he doesn't have a voice is to not ruin the immersion factor of the game. Also, ValVe doesn't want to end up with another M situation like Nintendo has to deal with.
And yes, Chell may be mentally disabled, but she solves physics puzzles like a champ. then again, i'd like to see you awake from cyrosleep after god knows how many years and be fully cognitively aware.
Mentally disabled, =/= retarded. Retarded is a term mostly just used for those with Downs syndrome and nothing else.

Chell is the mentally disabled one here, remember?

Woman can't say anything, just jumps around.
You know what? Chell and Gordon should get together! They have a lot in common.

I'm inclined to believe that Gordon Freeman isn't actually hitting people with crowbars...he just imagines himself doing it.

You see, we aren't playing as Gordon Freeman, we are inside bearing witness to his mental image of the world. Gordon doesn't hit people, he just REALLY wants to. Since his angry, violent wishes are so strong, we see them instead of what really happens.

He doesn't actually jump on tables, he just thinks of how much more fun it would be.

And yeah, people are still sarcastic assholes, which makes Gordon Freeman want to do inappropriate things even more.

Gordon Freeman isn't mentally disabled, he's just some guy who has to repress his urges.

Uh, How exactly is Stephen Hawking's disease comparable to mental retardation?
