Freemans the closest thing to a real life gamer, thats why people love him so much.
Others like Master Chief, Kratos, Soap MacTavish, etc., they all have personalities that only a certain group of people can appreciate. I.E. the Master Chief-is liked by military guys and Frat Boys, Kratos-Thesbian types, and Soap-...other...military guys and frat boys.

My point is Gordans silent, strong, nerdy, smart, and still manages to get the attention of chicks (Alyx) without saying a word! Which is what every geeky gamer wants to be like HA!

P.S. Eddie Riggs is probably the game character I would want to be if I were a game character, just cause his love for METAL is as big as mine.
Well, Master Chief and Kratos seem like they would rub their nipples in excitiement of their 'awesomeness' and thats just bleh, and Soap...well, he just shouldnt win. If he did, it would basically be "Player is the best hero" since he is not really a defined character, but just a name for the player to be.
I still say Link deservese it more, but Gordon deserves it more than those 3 definatly.

i agree, i dont think he belongs there. sure, his actions are great, but hes as bland as non space marines gets.

my personal choice for this award would probably be Soap MacTavish. he has characterization, and he actually saved the world from Zakhaev´s nuclear strike.

im not saying this as a COD4 fanboy, but think about it. he saves the bloody world, and survived the incredibly cruel ending.
enlighten me. how does soap have characterization?

soap saved the world? no, soap saved the US. Gordon blew up the citadel and closed the combine portal, which will effectively destroy the combine and win the war.

Gordon feels like the average joe.. the average joe who is a physicist in a badass suit who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, yet still manages to overcome all obstacles he is faced with.

Nice one for a character who has almost zero personality.

Don't give me the "he's supposed to be you" bullsh*t. I love Freeman, but characters who don't say a single word throughout the game shouldn't be in these kinds of contests.

soap didnt just save the US, because if Zakhaev wanted to recreate the Soviet Union, he´d had to blow up quite a few others. probably also the UK... and the lands surrounding them.

Fine, they both play a major role in stopping world destruction.
But still how does soap have characterization?

at the very least, at least we know what Gordon Freeman looks like.

I can't believe what you just said... you complained about a silent protagonist with no dialog going around and saving humanity and replaced him with a silent protagonist who relies on a squad of completely unmemorable and unlikable to go out and save the eastern coast of America from a crazy Russian.

You sir are a fanboy

This would have been more interesting if 4chan had successfully spiked the punch imho.

Because he's the protagonist in what is often considered (rightly in my opinion) one of the best game series of all time?

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Half Life, but just because he doesn't speak whatsoever doesn't mean that he's not a hero. He is The One Free Man, and in the game world he's kind of a big deal. I'd even say that he's the right man in the wrong place, but it's been said already.

And not talking doesn't mean he's got no character
This. This. This. 100%. This.

I can see how snake almost beat Gordon Freeman though. He's such a likable character. Pity I didn't really like anything else about the MGS games.

To be honest i think the game is overrated

the plot is boring its just like gordon is going to point a to point but then point b is moves with no information why

the npcs are hard to connect with or why i should care that they die or not

i dont exactly agree that i should fill in the blanks with gordon we have the game designers for that

im not saying its horrible it must be good somehow lots and lots of people like it but i'll give it 2.5 out of 5 in my scale which is a great big meh

And Gordon freeman didn't save the world?

maybe not instantaneously, but he crippled an autocratic dictatorship that had a stranglehold on earth for about ten years, which will inevitably lead to earth's recovery. And let's not forget how much worse it would have been if he hadn't killed the nihilanth in Xen.

And what's up with the Half life bashing? is it the new cool thing to do? did the teachers tell you to stop picking on halo? christ's sake.

Sorry, I couldnt help but laugh there. His name is Mactavish, that is everything we know about him. He is a blank slate in a world of blank slates. Freeman has a whole wealth of backstory, you just have to look for it.
