You know I never understand why Kratos from God Of War never gets the best video game hero

Gordon is a mute for Christ sake, yeah the games maybe good but that doesn't make him a good hero.

Kratos on the other hand has some of the most epic lines in video gaming history, he kills Gods and gets health from having sex with two women and God of War has an amazing (maybe the best) combat engine ever made in a action game
DING DING DING DING. WE HAVE A WINNER. a stash of cookies and a cookie monster T-shirt for you, Rockerfly.

i gotta say, i agree on your argument.
Wow, I have to say I really hate you now.

The only reason he won is because of the Steam message.
I dont know if you have seen the march madness contest on the escapist, but Turbine have won everytime for doing that exact same thing, but for every day of the contest.

Like most people I rarely bother reading those message boxes and closed it without a glance.

Yeah I saw that and it wasn't fair then and times haven't changed.

If you really need stuff like that you should think about the the character development of your character and if you have done a good job (which Valve haven't done).

He's a scientist who kills aliens and zombies, that's pretty cool. Besides most heros in games are either soldiers, elite soldiers, ancient warriors, kings or princes, or something grand.
So Gordon is quite normal, and thusly what he does makes him incredibly brave and 'heroic'.
His totaly lack of personality, makes him loveable, because we make him, us. we print ourselves onto freeman, most of us like ourselves, so we like freeman.

So Gamespot does their annual match up where people vote on their favorite heroes from video games. And Gordon Freeman wins yet another such contest. Does anyone else think this is bullshit since Gordon Freeman isn't even really a character? He has almost zero characterization, limited dialogue, and a one-dimensional personality. His achievements are...well...surviving some fucked up experiments, I guess?

So what makes Freeman the "Greatest Video Game Hero"? Please enlighten me because I'm stupefied.
I too was rather annoyed by the winner , even mario seemed to have better earning of the award.

Gordan freeman too me is one of the most boring characters to play as , yes it seems nice that he is you but the reason I like to play a game is too have someone awesome too like and interact with.

so overall i disagree with gordan freeman as the greatest gaming hero , someone with a more character would have been a better choice.

But this is only my opinion so don't flame me.

i would like to say kratos but erm hero is a bit of a stretch... hes more rediculously angrily neutral. everything in his way is dead, save no one that isnt required for his use.

anyway im not happy with the vote as you said not a huge achievment...but dont really care. lets put it this way mr freeman who will win in a fight eh??!
might i remind you kratos rips gods heads of so he can see in the dark instead of getting a torch.

i agree, i dont think he belongs there. sure, his actions are great, but hes as bland as non space marines gets.

my personal choice for this award would probably be Soap MacTavish. he has characterization, and he actually saved the world from Zakhaev´s nuclear strike.

im not saying this as a COD4 fanboy, but think about it. he saves the bloody world, and survived the incredibly cruel ending.
/facepalm

I can't believe what you just said... you complained about a silent protagonist with no dialog going around and saving humanity and replaced him with a silent protagonist who relies on a squad of completely unmemorable and unlikable to go out and save the eastern coast of America from a crazy Russian.

You sir are a fanboy
/facepalm

And I can't believe what you just said, memorable characters eh, well captain price is for starters he has the epic sniping mission, you have gaz the sort of weapons expert he's memorable for starters he has the retarded time for you to beat in the training mission you also have an epic final mission with the mile high club.

I can understand the memorable characters from half life, but not many levels stick out in my head as outstanding or memorable.

Well in all honestey, do we really need a website to tell us who the greatest gaming hero is?
Valve havent done an amazing job of characterising Freeman, but I think thats why I like him so much. Most developers try to characterise their heros but end up making them into unlikeable pricks, this hasnt happened to Freeman, so while his development is shallow, I feel its all the better for it.

Gordon Freeman won because he has whatever personality and traits you want to him to have. Voting for him is basically voting for yourself.

Anyway, this is Gamespot we're talking about. I wouldn't take the opinions of that particular community to heart.
That's deep. I like it. I didn't vote.
I'd probably shout out Lara (from the PS1 era) before she became a parody of herself.

My immediate thought was 'FIX!' but I think a lot of people would vote for him or rather the HL games.

His weapons,
His Vehicles,
His quirky and volumptous sidekick/eye candy

Basically the people were voting for Half-life 2 and gordon was meerly a vehicle to do so.
Gordon freeman isn't really a character so much as a pair of gun-wielding hands and 'Insert player here'.
Hence no-one really voted for Gordon, people voted for the person who makes Gordon do what he does - i.e. themselves!
That and the fact that Steam told them too and Valve fans are obediant to their relentless masters (i should know; i am one).

Ah well, Roll on the L4D2 becoming the based-rated game not to even have been released for people to play and rate yet...

As much as I love the half life series my vote would have gone for snake.
I agree.
Also Has no one else noticed this

Sorry for the poor quality
Yes I have but I don't get your point
My point is that Snake had more votes but Freeman won anyway.
Snake doesn't have more votes

Gordon has 65982 while Snake has 65863. Unless I'm mistaken Gordon has more votes.

Yep, my bad. I only noticed that after I read the quote asking my point. Sorry.

He didn't really deserve to be there, I'm not sure why he was put there to be honest, probably something to do with his main choice of weapon to be this:
