I was given the same link to the same bit of news. GameSpot are a bunch of self-righteous cunts whom I give no credence to and rely on for gaming relevance even less. They give truly brilliant games that haven't paid them off horrible scores and endless praise to the ones who walk into their building with sacks of cash with giant dollar signs on them.

And? Some people like Half-Life. There was enough of them who voted who rocketed Freeman to no.1.

Personally, I would've voted for Isaac/Felix from Golden Sun for greatest video game hero. But, since they weren't represented, I was going to go for Samus Aran.

Personally I like Freeman - I know he's not a well detailed character in the traditional sense with massive back story and everything, but I don't know..... He's ftw =]

The Half-Life series is amazing. Gordon Freeman is an interesting character, but in my opinion not one of the best of all time, maybe not even the most interesting in the series.

It's just a poll though, it doesn't mean you have to change your mind to accommodate it.

No idea. I don't even know what Freeman's motives are. For all we know he could just be fighting the combine so that he can install his own genocidal dictatorial regime.

He won because people like Half-Life, not because he was the "greatest videogame hero". In fact when you really do think about it Gordon Freemen is indeed just a bland a character as say Master Chief (or any other FPS character really). He doesn't even do anything that relatively amazing considering he onlys saves the Earth versus many of the other contenders saving pretty much the entire galaxy, multiple times...

But anyways it's just a popularity contest and because Half-Life (at least on the interwebs) is immensely popular anything that features something Half-Life related in a poll, will have Half-Life come out on top.

The steam message certainly didn't hurt his chances either.

How so? He doesn't talk, you never see his face outside the box art, he's never given a backstory, he's never characterized, he has no personality, his motives are never clear.

In what way is he an "interesting character?"

He's barely a character at all.

its like the chuck norris arguement - he made a few good low budget action movies, and BAM hes a living legend on the internet. Gordons reputation is ovverated, although I would still like to see who would win in a fight between the freeman and...the chief.
Depends, does Gordon have the Super Gravity Gun?

If answer = 0

Then Master Chief most likely. Then again, I don't really see them fighting, seeing as they're both protecting the world(s) from alien devestation and enslavement... Though MC is more likely to kill him as a dangerous wild card.

Then there's the G-Man...

Actually? Who cares. That's turning into Fan Fiction. Blegh.

Gordon is described by the events and other characters in the Half-life series. He's not some narcissistic window for you. He has a personality, and if you pay enough attention to the dialogue of the other characters while he's around, as well as the actions that the plot forces him to take (it's a linear story people, you can't actually change what he does very much) they very fully describe what he is like.

IMO Gordon's silence was purposeful so that you wouldn't be jarred out of his (VERY WELL DEFINED) character by some voice you didn't like. See: Batman, Watchmen for oft complained about voices that ruin characters for some people.

I agree. Half Life 2 has some great characters, G-man formost, but Gordan Freeman is not one of them. He's just another faceless voiceless guy that people control. He has less characterization than even the combine soldiers...
