Oh hey, another " ---- no one has heard of" thread, how original. Anyhow, I'd go with Surfer Blood - 90s Alt rock with a modern twist. Pretty awesome, especially their album Astrocoast
Like I said, I haven't been around here long, so I didn't know it was that common of a topic. (My reg date says last november, but I only signed up so I could try some of the games in the Yahtzee conteset. I only really started posting and exploring the forums a week ago). If it's any consolation, I started the thread to try and find new music that others like and I should try, not to show off what I'm into.
No need to apologize, the comment wasn't directed towards you, personally. I'm totally for discovering new music, I think it's great; the main issue I have with threads like these is the excessive elitism one often sees. To be fair, though, it's usually "games not many people have heard of"; I haven't seen a music one in a while. So yeah, just ignore the unnecessary sarcasm in my first post :)

Anyone heard of Wolf Parade? Great Montreal indie band! They sound a little like Modest Mouse, partly because Issac Brock produced their first album. Look them up!

I would also suggest The Arcade Fire, Metric, and Japandroids. See a trend here? Canada has some great muzak...

ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
I likes me some 'From the Beginning', 'Jerusalem' and their version of 'Peter Gunn' quite a good bit, not to mention 'Knife Edge'.
Good to see someone knows 'em here but have you heard their songs Tarkus, Trilogy, The Endless Enigma and Karn Evil 9? Those are the really big songs.
Yep. It's been a while since I've listened to Trilogy or Works Live though, which are the albums I'm most familiar with apart from that Greatest Hits floating around here somewhere. I'm also rather fond of the Moody Blues.
Awesome, there are a lot of people that only know of their Works albums but the best part of ELP is their first 4 albums.

FRUVOUS! I recently started listening to some of their albums again.
Anyway, time for my plugs.
As always, I must mention Carbon Leaf.
I have also been listening to The Tossers recently.
Couldn't find any of my favorite songs on youtube, but this one isn't bad.

Black Moth Super Rainbow

(although, I'm positive people have heard of them by now; they were on my mind and in seeing this thread, I thought they deserved a mention)

One greatly underappreciated band is:

"Kamelot"

Okay, so they ARE popular in eastern Europe, but almost no-one outside of Norway has heard of them, which is a shame, because they are a genuinely good symphonic metal band, and deserve far more recognition.
Then again, the entire metal genre is underappreciated thanks to the raft of 'scream music', which I am NOT a fan of!
Thank You.

I was thinking that I was going to be the only Kamelot fan on this thread and it's nice to know that people outside of Europe have heard of them.
The ironic bit about that is Kamelot is from Florida. True, their current vocalist Roy Khan is Norwegian, but the band itself is one of maybe... oh, 2 American power metal acts (oddly enough, the other one (Iced Earth) is also from Florida).

It says a lot about how unappreciated their brand of metal is in America when you consider that almost all their fans are European.

Lordi and Within Temptation are bands from Finland and Holland that I am a fan of.
Good man, I love Lordi.

"HARD, ROCK, HALLELUJAH!"
Gotta love Within Temptation. Although I'm getting really sick of people assuming that all female fronted metal is ripping off Evanescence. I have had people mistake Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lunatica, and Sirenia for what is essentially a rock band with pop lyrics.
For another chick led band, check out Lacuna Coil [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixxtnrWb17Y&feature=channel]
Ooh, are we name-dropping female-fronted metal bands now? Yay!

  • Behold a list, comprised of things I own that fit this criteria besides the bands you mentioned (which are also in my collection)!

    1. After Forever
    2. Amberian Dawn
    3. Angtoria
    4. Artrosis
    5. Coronatus
    6. Dark Moor [small](the original lineup at least, current vocalist is a guy who sounds almost exactly like their original female vocalist)[/small]
    7. Delain
    8. Echoes of Eternity
    9. Edenbridge
    10. Elis
    11. Epica
    12. Eyes Of Eden
    13. Gravity Burn
    14. Hydrogyn
    15. Katra
    16. Krypteria
    17. Leaves' Eyes
    18. Lullacry [small](more hard rock than metal per se, but definitely female-fronted!)[/small]
    19. Midnattsol
    20. Octavia Sperati
    21. Operatika
    22. Passionworks
    23. Satyrian [small](okay, technically this one isn't strictly female-fronted, as they have two female vocalists and two male vocalists)[/small]
    24. Stream Of Passion
    25. Tarja [small](former vocalist of Nightwish)[/small]
    26. Todesbonden
    27. Tristania
    28. Unsun
    29. Visions of Atlantis
I would provide links to examples of each, but I just listed 29 different bands and I'm kind of tired right now, heh. I do encourage you to look them up though, as they are all excellent.

But definitely check out Delain if you are a fan of Within Temptation, they were actually formed by Within Temptation's former keyboard player, and Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation's vocalist) contributed lead vocals on one track for their debut album [small](along with Liv Kristine from Leaves' Eyes/Theatre of Tragedy and Marco Hietala from Nightwish/Tarot (Marco also sang on their second album))[/small].

It's true, power metal isn't very popular in America, it's starting to gain popularity I think, but much like thrash, the fans kinda dried up in the late 80s/early 90s.

19. Midnattsol
I recognized most of those, Midnattsol is the only one I have anything by, En Natt in Nord is on my MP3 player. If we're gonna do chick fronted stuff, I can help a little:

The Plasmatics, fronted by Wendy O Williams, bit of punk, bit of metal, shitload of rock.

Fooking awesome

Oh, and one other "band" that I forgot to put in my first post, Ihsahn

Dive

The Rasmus (I'm sure they're well known in Finland and other parts of Europe, but here they're quite obscure.)

BOREALIS omg. Probably my favourite CD ever - which says a lot! (and I got it signed! Eee!)

Powerglove is also pretty sweet. I mean, its metal covers of videogame music.

I saw them in '07 when they opened for Lacuna Coil. Great band.

As for my contribution, I'll go with The Axis of Perdition. It's a British black metal band that's heavily influenced by Silent Hill. Two of my loves combined.

Also, Panzerchrist. A Danish death metal band, with war themed lyrics and imagery (as you could probably guess by their name).

my meager contribution:
The Buzzcocks, The Damned, Violent Femmes, Big D and The Kids Table, Big Rude Jake, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra, Cracker, Reverend Horton Heat, The Faces, Fury In The Slaughterhouse (the music is better than the name, I swear), Lordi (not really for everyone, either you enjoy them and all of their goofiness or you just can't get into it, not much middle ground), The Mooney Suzuki, Oysterhead, The Presidents of The United States of America, The Pogues, The Replacements, Rheostatics, The Specials, The Watchmen (no, Rorschach is NOT part of the band), aaannnnnd The Purple Gang.
I have no idea if any of the bands are really unknown or not, since I pay NO attention to what people listen to. Anyway, hope I helped.

Benea Reach, a Norwegian Progressive metal / Mathcore (Yes, that's a genre) band.
I heard of them not long ago, I really like them.
<youtube=tYVZx5riyTc>

[SUB]THese may be well known to someone, but not me:[/SUB]
Maybe Keep of Kalessin, I had never heard of it before they participated and made it to 3[SUB]rd[/SUB] place in the norwegian singing/band competition Melodi Grand Prix.
The genre they play is Extreme Metal.
They made it there with this:

That kinda reminded me of the music in the towns and cities in the older Pokemon games.
AWESOME! :D
