The most underrated game of all-time imo is Poy Poy for ps1. It was the funnest multiplayer on the playstation.
Haven't played the first game, but I had a copy of Poy Poy 2 about 10 years ago, and it's one of my most favourite games, ever.

"The Darkness," PS3/360 game based on the DC Top Cow graphic novel of the same name.
Fixed that for you. It's actually tied in with Witchblade pretty heavily.
I was all ready to contest your "edit," and looked into it. Turns out, you're right. Must have been the batman/Darkness cross over that confused me. I thought Top Cow was a part of DC comics. :p
Yeah, the DC labels are Vertigo and Wildstorm. Vertigo is their mature reader's line. Wildstorm and Top Cow both came out of the creation of Image in the early 90s. But, as far as I know, Top Cow is still a part of Image.

As for The Darkness, it's not a bad comic, just, underwhelming. There's a lot of potential in the comic and the character, but, I've yet to see anyone do anything really interesting with Jackie. Hell, the first arc in the comic was written by Garth Ennis, who apparently got so bored looking at the concept for the series that all he could come up with was taking chunks from characters in Preacher and mashing them together awkwardly. (I know that timeline's backwards, but still.)

nobody has ever played Phantom Crash, an original xbox title. it's a mech game that puts others like mechassault, chromehounds, and even steel battalion to shame.

it's frenetic, fast-paced, and offers nigh-unlimited customization and upgrade options. it was also quirky, in the lovable japanese sort of way, and was extremely deep.

it has a sequel on the PS2 called S.L.A.I. i can guarantee you won't find a copy of PC, but you might find a copy of S.L.A.I. in a bargain bin somewhere.

also, it had the best-rendered intro scene of any game i have ever seen, last generation or current, bar none. it looked freakin real.

Star Wars Republic Commando
Oh my god, I spent so many hours on this thing it wasn't even funny, I'm sorry but this was simply the greatest starwars game in the last 10-12 years, the entired combat and squad mechanic was done so well its insane. Not to mention that when you got bored of the campaign which took me at least 30 hours this was your outlet, combat was fast paced and the enviornments were simply amazing, does anyone remember the fight in the republic cruiser with the zero G area?

Definitely Beyond Good and Evil. Incredible game, drowned out in the popular noise of the time.

Okami comes in as an extremely close second. Extremely. Okay, it's a tie. Probably the most beautiful artistic experience of my life.
Great game, at first when I saw this I was a bit skeptical but now I still pick up my old copy of it on the PS2 and play it, the game was stunning and fluid with an amazing story mixed in that you don't often ever see done well, I salute you Okami Ameterasu.

Plus she just looks bad ass in her final form with all her powers!

Starsiege Tribes (PC)
TRIIBES!
oh, my god, I loved that game to no end, and ran a crazy modded server a while back.
I'm happy that the player run master server is still working 0_0
I keep saying they should put it on Impulse and Steam
I believe the original game is freeware now, so that may defeat the purpose.

Tribes 2 on the other hand...

SpInFuSoR!!!!
Tribes is freeware, but as freeware few people know about it and GarageGames isn't making any money off of it. By putting it on steam for $9.99 downloads they would turn a modest profit and introduce a lot more people to the game.

But you're right, if they're going to go Steam, Tribes 2 at $14.99 would make a killing, especially if they marketed it right and picked some good screenshots.

Mirrors Edge. I enjoyed it the first time through back in November, and I still find myself playing it from time to time. I have no idea why the game appeals to me so much, it just does.
I'll agree with you on that. Many people act like it's one of the worst games in the world, but it's pretty good fun. Except for speed runs. Balls to those.
Yep, Its very artistic and pretty original, and looks great. That might be why. Get ready for number 2.

Shadowbane (Sadly Obsolete one of a kind MMO, PC)
Thank you sir, I'm glad someone else knew this game's greatness. If it was remade with the same kind of complex class system, guild battles and extremely open pvp but somehow combined with say a Guild Wars type campaign on the side, oh magical things could happen. WoW would pale and wilt next to it.
I pitched this to Ubisoft, that a Remake of Shadowbane with Instanced missions and modern graphics and anti-hacker protections would really do well. The only reason Shadowbane fell is because of it's age/dated graphics and because they didn't know how to prevent hacking in MMO's back then.

There's always one person who makes a massive list. That said, from reviews and what I've heard (I've never played any of the items on this list [my loss for being so young, I guess]), Chrono Trigger isn't so much underrated as underapreciated. Also, the Fallout series is underrated? I never got that impression they were. Granted you are talking about the older games, so you probably have a point there. (on a se related note, Fallout has been on my hard drive for hard drive for a while now and I still haven't got aroud to playing it.)

OT: I haven't heard many people showing the love for Psychonauts or No More Heroes. Those aren't really underrated, but the sort of critic's darlings that get great review but don't do so well commerically. I also feel a lack of love for LoZ Majora's Mask too.

EDIT: I totally forgot these;Tales of Symphonia, Banjo-Kazooie (the whole series really) and PaperMario 2. No one ever mentions the games, but they were amazing.

I'm going to say the Witcher. Its an awesome RPG with hours of fun immersive gameolay. I also think they captured the essence of Geralt and some of the other characters and the General Witcher world really well.
Of course, i only know one other person that agrees with me on this. Everyone else i know who has played it thought it sucked. Then again, by everyone else i mean two other people XD

These aren't underated, they're underplayed. Okami/Beyond Good and Evil/Psychonauts/Eternal Darkness have become cult figures due to their quality.

I'm going to second Stranger's Wrath and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Wrath was a fantastic hybrid game, the weapons were inventive, they handled nicely, and the plot was surprisingly badass once it got going. Orta gets a special place in my heart just for the fantastic quality of the music and it's gibberish language. The graphics have also held up pretty well for an XBox launch title, mostly because the majority of the screen quickly gets filled by pretty pretty lights.

And what joker listed Shadows of Amn? It's Baldur's Gate! BioWare! One of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. The series that DEFINED western RPGS. Saying it's underrated implies that there's a significant population that consider it less than the absolute masterpiece that it is.

I barely beat the first speed run, had to do it several times over.
