Well, I'm an entirely unbiased persona, and as such, I can confidently state that my answer (Goldeneye 007) was *not* influenced by nostalgia, fanboyism or any other such contravening factors.
Oh. Yeah, actually, it was, but I do so love that game.

Modern Warfare 2. The hight of shooting prowess. I mean it's just so innovative and has such a deep story. Oh and the online community is great to, really geared towards teamwork and co-operation.
Modern Warfare 2 wasn't all that innovative to be honest. It was a decent game but it wasn't anything new. The storyline was alright but it wasn't all that 'new'.

Still a good game and probably is the best of its time in the case of sales and playerbase, although that being said I could easily mark any of the Half-Life based games.
fool you just got trolled

hard
I really enjoy how trying to spot Internet Sarcasm at 2AM is considered being trolled hard. That being said, sarcasm on the internet mate, unless it's being said, cbb with actually trying to see it in a dickwad way..especially at 2AM.

The greatest FPS of all is and forever shall be the FPS sections of Banjo-Tooie.
Thank you.

Not to mention the multiplayer mode which was centered around shooting each other with egg-filled birds. How can you top a FPS like that? Not even Timesplitters can match that kind of awesome.

LIES!!!!!!!!!

I say Metriod Prime!
I should've typed the TimeSplitters series, because the first one wasn't that great.
Yes, Metroid Prime is awesome. I should get on to completing it then probably skipping the second one on The Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Can you kill a monkey with a brick in a chinese restaraunt...whilest playing as a snowman floating on a magic carpet?
I did like Banjo-Tooie, but never completed it. I liked some of the new ideas but that caused it to be too complex for me to finish.

My logic appears to have been burst into flame.

Well, you got me there, good sir. Granted, I was merely musing when I stated the aspects of Banjo Tooie, as I myself consider Timesplitters: Future Perfect to be one of my all-time favorite shooters.

I still play it to this day.

Metroid Prime, duh. The controls worked, it was fun and engaging, the environment was beautiful and it did a great job of making you feel utterly ALONE.

Half life 2 wooooooo
I think the Half-Life series will always be a favorite of many. The original was and has been on the top of my shelf for the last decade (well a little more). Rarely has a game ever been so awesome.

DOOM and DOOM2 (I prefer to think of them as one entity split)

Quake 2 - I feel this defined the Multiplayer Deathmatch arena, and almost any game I've played since pales in comparison to those halcyon days. Also, the 64 player maps were awesome when you actually had enough to fill them. (Yes, there were 64 player maps)

Quake/Half-Life - Because it started the TFC/Counterstrike phenomena. Quake because it was the engine that drove Half-Life, Half-Life because it was so awesomely modded.

Half-Life 2 - Source = Awesomeness

Halo - Give credit where credit is due, Halo did bring the FPS to the common man, and thus opened a world of things for future gaming.

Mass Effect 2:
While considered an RPG, the game is undeniably played as a FPS with a leveling system and side powers akin to games like Bioshock. I would love to see more FPS's use this games example and run with it.

For those that refuse to consider Mass Effect 2 a shooter....

Half Life 2:
Such a polished experience whose sections tend to run just a little too long before moving on to the next.
I think someone needs to brush up on what a FPS is. FPS = FIRST Person Shooter. Mass Effect 1/2 were both TPS or THIRD person shooters. (in actuality, they are action RPG's with TPS elements but w/e...no need to argue semantics)

OT: Gonna have to go with DOOM on this one. Seeing as it essentially created the genre and all that.
