Modern Warfare 2. The hight of shooting prowess. I mean it's just so innovative and has such a deep story. Oh and the online community is great to, really geared towards teamwork and co-operation.
I would have to agree with you.

The greatest FPS of all is and forever shall be the FPS sections of Banjo-Tooie.
Thank you.

Not to mention the multiplayer mode which was centered around shooting each other with egg-filled birds. How can you top a FPS like that? Not even Timesplitters can match that kind of awesome.
DK64 came close with fruit as a weapon, but BT kicked its ass.

Did you hit your head on something?
it's not really innovative "hide behind cover, try to get head shots, ramp a snow mobile over a massive chasm... it has some amazing set pieces but it's not innovative.
The story was predictable. Maybe I'm just clairvoyant but I knew Shepherd was evil from the second Macrov shot me.
I beat the story on Hardcore in less than six hours. in one sitting. that's not a good game.
And seriously? You think 10000 people calling you a fag is a great community?

I did like the co op missions though those were awesome.

Tough choice but I'd have to say Half Life 2.
I'd have to agree with you. I haven't played system shock or Deus Ex.
But Half Life is great

it's the second FPS I ever played and the first one I played all the way through

Since 'best' all comes down to taste, I'll simply list my personal picks:

- Doom
- Duke Nukem 3D
- GoldenEye 007
- Half-Life
- System Shock 2
- Deus Ex
- Condemned: Criminal Origins
- BioShock
- Left 4 Dead

Of course, all of them tremble and pale in the divine splendor that is Daikatana.

Modern Warfare 2 wasn't all that innovative to be honest. It was a decent game but it wasn't anything new. The storyline was alright but it wasn't all that 'new'.

Still a good game and probably is the best of its time in the case of sales and playerbase, although that being said I could easily mark any of the Half-Life based games.
Maybe i should have made my sarcasm more clear....
No you really don't have to.

Halo 2 was pretty far ahead of it's time as far as multiplayer features go. Parties, Friends Lists, well-done matchmaking. I think Halo 2 is the best multiplayer game ever made, so maybe I'm a little biased.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In a time when most FPSs seemed to be stuck in the years 1941-45, CoD 4 stepped up and forever changed the market. A fantastic story line with amazing scripted moments and an innovative, customizable mulitplayer experience made CoD 4 an instant masterpiece that stood out from the crowd and forced the entire FPS market to adapt to try and match its sheer brilliance. In essence, it was the latest FPS revolution and its impact will be felt long after the Call of Duty series has run its course.
