I can't believe I haven't seen Jimmy Paige or The Edge. On top of that, Eric Clapton. Yay.

Buckethead. And if you think he can just play fast with no melody or rythm, check out C2B3 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjOM5YjMZ8w]

If people are counting Bass Guitarists as Guitarists then I'd like to mention Victor Wooten.

If not, then I'd most likely go for Paul Gilbert. I personally think that Technical Difficulties doesn't go over the top with the shredding and still sounds like there was a lot of hard work and devotion put into it.

Oh wait I almost forgot... Eric Fucking Clapton. Seen him in concert and he can play any kind of music that uses a guitar.
THANK YOU! I can't believe it took 28 posts for someone to mention Eric Clapton! I would also add someone who isn't on here yet. Brian May from Queen. In terms of skill as a songwriter and performer he is definately top shelf.

I don't find it terribly surprising that nobody has mentioned Andres Segovia. Before Andres, the guitar was an instrument looked down upon and disgraced. He legitimized the instrument which would become a staple for the rest of the century. People like Les Paul (also not mentioned), Jimi Hendrix, and even Yngwie (or however you spell his first name) Malmsteen are Segovia's legacy. He put more credence into creating music and teaching the art than into looking good and making a name for himself. I could say a lot more here, but the music speaks far louder. So go out and look him up.

I think any of the artists mentioned here (without having looked at everyone's opinion) qualifies, in their own specialty.

I honestly can't say that any SINGLE guitarist is truly the greatest ever... but each of the one I saw mentioned is phen9ominal in their own right. That said, if no one mentioned Clapton, why the HELL not?

Edit: Ninja'd about Clapton, at least twice.

Why has nobody mentioned Dimebag as I am typing this? His technical prowess was amazing, just listen to any solo off of the Cowboys From Hell Album. His riffs and sense of groove with his brother are amazing and Vulgar Display of Power is a perfect showcase of his diversity. Some people hate his tone, but I love it. Plus, he was (obviously) in Pantera, and every metal band in the post-Pantera world copies them, even if they don't mean to. My favorite of all time. I'm not going to say greatest, because this is an opinion thread.
They did.
Where? Ctrl+f'd it and didn't find anything.
Fuck! I just double checked and your right, it was another thread I was thinking of!
my bad, but I fucking love the rhythm section of walk, and the solo makes it even more awesome
Ehh Walk is cool and all, but I like when he really blows everybody away. Like in Floods. I get chills during that song every time, especially the end.

Glad to see Satriani mentioned in here because he definitely does it for me.

Pretty much all the artists mentioned here have great technical prowess. Many of them are capable and awesome shredders. But technical ability doesnt=music. Which is why people like Stevie Ray Vaughan will still get mentioned in threads like these (hats off to him) despite his general lack of metal shredding.
I mentioned that because some neo-classical snobs scoff at metal players, but Dimebag could shred with the best. Don't get me wrong, I would rather hear a good riff than a good solo any day, but shredding does have a part in the mix hahaha.
I hear you. It wasnt a quip directed at you really. Mostly just making a point. Everyone is entitled to their differing opinions. Unless it involves Justin Bieber ;)

I always hate these threads. Everybody always names off classic rock guitarists like Hendrix or Jimmy Page, some random metal wanker, or even worse... One of those neo-classical metal guitarists *shudders*. I mean, they are great guitarist, legends, but I never understand why so many stop at them as "the best."
Then I ask you good sir: who should we be naming?

OT: As a humble purveyor of rock and metal, I can't think of one guitarist who can be labeled the best ever, especially when I know some players who are technically just as good as some of the people mentioned here. Some better criteria is in order. Are we saying stage presence is important, or just technical skill, or musicality? Perhaps their songwriting abilities or improvisation abilities?

Some of my favorites though: Paul Guilbert and David Gilmour

it depends on whether you're going for style or pure technique because if you go for style + technique it comes down to hendrix and stevie ray vaughn but if you go by technique alone it's john petrucci
