A LOT of these movies aren't underrated. A couple are under-watched, sure, but most here aren't underrated.

OT: I just watched a movie called The Brothers Bloom that didn't get a wide release despite the fact that it's full of quirky humour and heart. I'm surprised that it never did get anything more than its current cult following.
Wooo I love this movie! My underrated is Battle Royale, don't know anybody who's heard of it, but since you guys are movie buffs most likely, I bet you have.

Sorry, I really like John Hughes's stuff. It's my favorite non-action material.

I'd say Fire Birds, basically it's a better Top Gun with Appache gunships instead of F-14s. Plus it has Nicholas Cage and Tommy Lee Jones, that's a win right there.

Airplane is one of my favorite comedies, but almost no one has heard of it. The cast is good, the plot is... legible, and the jokes are obscure (good)

Galaxy quest is great!

I'd have to say the Goonies and Gran Torino, also Groundhog Day (All films that range in my top ten). So in short don't make your movie start with a G.

So many to choose from, here's a few
Rescuers Down Under
9
Titan AE
The 1st Terminator (I know it's popular but it's always overshadowed by it's incredible sequel)
Day of the Dead

Believe me there are others.

12 monkeys because I have only met 1 person who has seen it and the people I talk to about it dismiss it because of the title. It is my favorite movie.

I've seen it. The title may seem strange, but honestly once they see the cover of the dvd I think they'll take it more seriously.

GALAXY QUEST! It's just too good.

Also, Army Of Darkness only has a 2 star out of 5 rating on Allmovie.

They are fools, and shall die soon. That is all I shall say.

And this too.
All the evil dead movies are underated really. I think they kick ass. Especially the first one.

Pitch Black, a scifi classic in my opinion but I have only met two people who have seen it and one of them hated it
I saw it in the theater, more by accident than by intent, and was pleasantly surprised. It's pretty well liked in the circles I travel in, so it's not that underrated.
Another one featuring Vin Diesel which didn't get a lot of attention was Knockaround Guys, which also had Seth Green and Barry Pepper. And also John Malkovich. Good stuff.

Brad Pitt in an awesome supporting role, in a Terry Gilliam film. Everyone should see it. This, too, was pretty popular with folks I know so I hadn't considered it underrated.

My turn?
Colossus: The Forbin Project, released in 1970. The writing and acting are terrific. The plot (military computer threatens to take over the world) isn't 100% original, but it's very well executed. Eric Braeden does very well in the lead role as the system designer, Dr. Forbin.

Missing Pieces (1991). I don't think most people even know the movie exists.

Wendel (Eric Idle) has inherited... SOMETHING. His recently deceased relative was a bit eccentric, and revealed nothing in his will except a very vague clue as to the object's whereabouts. Wendel and his friend Lou (Robert Wuhl) attempt to solve the riddle, with little luck. However, they soon discover that whatever the object is, it is valuable enough that an alarming number of shady characters will stop at absolutely nothing to possess it!

I must also mention Cats Don't Dance (1997).

This animated musical is the only movie that was made at Turner Animation before the studio was purchased by Warner. It is the story of Danny, a happy and optimistic cat from Kokomo who goes to Hollywood in search of fame and gets a job at a studio which, unfortunately for him, is run by the villainous child superstar Darla Dimple. Darla hates and despises all animals, and will only give them tiny supporting parts. (Danny, hoping to be the star of a big song-and-dance number, is handed a script page with the single word "Meow" on it.) The other animals at the studio, having long ago given up on their own ambitions, try to convince Danny to do the same - but his unstoppable optimism soon inspires them to take one more shot at the stars.
