"Mystery Men", starring Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, Kel Mitchell, Janeane Garofalo, Pee Wee Herman, Wes Studi, Greg Kinnear, Eddie Izzard, Tom Waits, and Geoffrey Rush.

That's the actual cast. It's basically "Watchmen" meets "Monty Python."

I always feel a little tense as I post something that is obscure within my social circle, presuming that the Escapists will not recognise it as obscure.
Here goes.

Old Boy? It handles fantasy settings and fights in a very realistic manner, to the point at which you think "oh, maybe if you were REALLY good at fighting.." even though it's not possible in the slightest. It has what I hold to be the greatest fight scene ever, and a fantastic twist. Definitely worth watching.

I'm gonna go with the final Matrix film. I really, really, REALLY don't understand why people dislike it. It's an absolute belter! I guess this could apply to the second as well though. I think most people have a "omg the 1st one pwns I liked it before it was cool" kind of attitude towards it.
No, most people saw it for what it was, a blatant Dark City rip-off. Except Dark City was better done and more interesting. First Matrix was awesome, everything that followed it was mostly bad.

Pitch Black is the only movie I can think of that doesn't have a huge cult following at least that I really enjoy. Shame that Vin Diesel missed what made Riddick awesome and the next movie was pretty awful. The game was amazing though.

I'm going to have to go with my favorite movie of all time Clue. Yes this is based off the board game and it is absolutely fantastic. I honestly never see this on anyone's all time favorite movies (hell most people I meet have never heard of it or knew that it was a movie) but every time I whip out the DVD people love it.
Clue was pretty funny.

Yeah, I'll go with that.

Yeah, Korean movie about a man who is kidnapped and kept in a hotel room for 10 years. I have never seen another movie as messed up as this one....and I mean that in a good way.

I feel that not enough people liked "No country for old men". It's got really great actors playing really great characters and a good original story.

Here are a few more even though some have been named before : Akira, Funny Games, Lock stock and two smoking barrels, One flew over a cuckoo's nest (ok it won oscars, so what? rent it), Kingdom of Heaven, Reservoir Dogs, Alien 3 (nobody likes it, so I stand up for it), Hamlet 2...the list could go on forever

A LOT of these movies aren't underrated. A couple are under-watched, sure, but most here aren't underrated.

OT: I just watched a movie called The Brothers Bloom that didn't get a wide release despite the fact that it's full of quirky humour and heart. I'm surprised that it never did get anything more than its current cult following.
Wooo I love this movie! My underrated is Battle Royale, don't know anybody who's heard of it, but since you guys are movie buffs most likely, I bet you have.
What a coincidence! I referenced a movie that you loved and you referenced a movie that I loved! I have seen over 2500 movies in my life and Battle Royale sits snugly in my top 15 of all time! I'm dreading the American remake though. It was derailed by the writer's strike but that doesn't mean that it's gone for good. I figure it's inevitable that it will get made.
American remake? Why don't they just watch the subtitled version, those bastards! Oh well, I'd like to see white girls beating the shit out of each other, heh-heh.
Because most people who aren't cinema lovers dislike reading subtitles. I don't mind because I'm hard of hearing anyway but many people, Americans and Canadians especially, would rather watch a dubbed version or an English-language remake over an original subtitled version.

Knowing America you're not going to see too much violence in the remake. They get squeamish when children fight so most of the death scenes are going to be off-camera. They're also most likely going to make it PG-13 so there's going to be no blood, sex, or gore and they're going to cram in a message like "Violence is bad and Democracy is good. Rah rah America!" Basically the Battle Royale remake is going to be like The Condemned: some parts will be pretty cool but it's mostly going to be a preachy, over-patriotic, and terrible film.
Actually I read on Wikipedia that; 1. It might not be made due to the VT massacre, and 2. If it is, it will not be PG/PG-13.

The Cell - just watched it again yesterday being shown on Film4, and it really struck me how damned good it was!

It's not a particularly well-known film as far as I know, but the people who do know about it generally tend to dismiss it out of hand as being Jennifer Lopez's feeble attempt at getting into movies. Those people, though, are missing one major point - she's NOT THAT BAD. I certainly prefer her acting over all the music she's done, anyway :p

Combine that with a fairly decent plot, Vincent d'Onofrio as yet another lunatic and a set of dreamscapes to make the best Surrealist artists blush, and it makes you wonder why so many people rip into it...

I'm with you on nearly every single one of these. Sir, you have good taste.

Oh I know that movie! It's was fun. Another underrated comedy is Evolution. Just for the notion that they kill aliens with Head & Shoulders.
I remember watching Evolution as a kid and loving it (one of my last tapes). I wish I haven't gone back to it though. Sometimes it's better to keep those movies in your memories. I also really liked to me a menace to society while drinking juice n da hood, but I haven't seen that in years either.

The Fountain. Screw Avatar. The Fountain has what are probably the most absolutely gorgeous visuals you will ever find in all of film.
