I read that U.S. troops in Baghdad get beneath cover after soccer games for precisely this reason. What goes up must come down.
Didn't they try this out on mythbusters and concluded that bullets falling don't pose a lethal threat to people standing under them when they fall down?
Well, yes and no. The Mythbusters found that a bullet fired directly up which runs out of momentum and then falls back to Earth powered by gravity was fairly harmless. However, if the bullet is following the ballistic arc at which it was fired they found it retains velocity and is still potentially lethal. So there.

Fact check #2 - a blanket insult directed at all Turks is racist, not xenophobic. Xenophobia is a disdain for all foreigners. - I refrain from comment as to the truth of the statement since I know FA about Turkish culture.

...and yes, absolutely bone stupid. You spray automatic weapons at WORK parties.

Wow sure is xenophobic in here.
I'm sorry, but any culture that is notorious for firing live rounds of ammunition, from a fully automatic assault rifle no less, wildly into the air at a celebration that tends to have large crowds of people.... is pretty fucking retarted. Nothing personal against them, but obviously that tradition needs rethinking.
Traditions are hard to change or break. I know in Serbia they still do it too, but at least the police does something about it occasionally - come down with a lot of questions about firing near a built up area. Too bad at new years just about EVERYBODY does it. Hell since there's been so many wars recently you can hear a whole building near you opening up.

It'll all calm down in a generation or two when peace has been established, however the current state of government and the frequent "interventions" from the west really aren't helping.

And if you ask me, I have no clue about how we are supposed to go about fixing any of said problems. Least of all merry people continuing a tradition they all embrace and love - no matter how stupid we may think it is.

I love the stupidity there.

They really should not get in to the EU.

No it isn't. Racism is the idea that mankind can be divided and categorised into different races all with specific genetic attributes and traits different from eachother.

Turkey is a country, and the people living in Turkey isn't a "race". It's an ethnic group perhaps, but not a "race".

So at worst, blanket statements about the turks might be construed as prejudiced depending on the motivation behind it. NOT "racist"...

And that makes it a reasonable excuse for the people in general to accept it when people evidantly DIE because of said tradition?

You know, we have traditions about dragging a fucking spruce tree into our houses around the winter season and decorate it. Sure it might look stupid, and sure some idiots get their houses burned down because they connect these litle electrical lights to the tree that fail and set fire to the tree, but there's a limit to acceptable mistakes and stupidity.

People who have put their hands on a gun in their life should know that it is DANGEROUS, and that you SHOULDN'T play around with it like that. Yet because of "tradition" these morons do it anyway.

So really, how long can you feasibly blame things on "tradition" without holding the fucktards who uphold this stupid tradition accountable for it?

Oh... wow. I think this is horrible. Sure, it's a stupid tradition to fire around when you're getting married (I don't quite get the meaning of it) but this is a scenario noone should ever have to experience.

Stuff like that happens a lot where I live. My village is surrounded by three Arab towns and whenever they have a wedding I can hear the gunshots. Sometimes I also hear about people getting killed later.

well at least he'll have something none of us will ever get, a triple kill medal.

The idea of firing guns sounds cool but man make it paintballs at least...

Shit, not if France, Germany and probably the rest of Europe have anything to say about it. Cameron just wants to be able to put more American bases in Turkey (you heard me) to scare Iran and Russia. I'll start taking their bid seriously when they decide that to admit to the genocide they committed, until then I have a better chance of becoming Pope.

OT: I reckon the next words out of the bride's mouth were "I think we should get a divorce", and if they weren't, they should be.
What genocide?

OT: May I say: "EPIC FAIL!"?

Thanks Lunatic, I was so indignant at the rampant misuse of "xenophobia" that the red mist descended and I couldn't think of the correct word myself. Not sure I agree with your definition of racism but either way "prejudiced" is a better word for what I was saying - Well said and I stand corrected.

I am still completely at a loss for why one would bring an AK-47 to a wedding in the first place. Although heaven knows I should've brought one to mine and shot my mother-in-law (and probably the bride while I was at it, considering how the marriage turned out.)
