Well, with all the rumours flying around of a GTA5 announcement at E3, I figured I'd find out what changes we all hope Rockstar make for the better.

Personally I'd like to see the following:

1. Proper checkpointing.

When we die, just restart us at a checkpoint, with the same ammo and armour we had when we first passed the same point.

It's maddening in GTA4 how dying or failing means having to drive around the city and pick up your body armour over and over before answering some stupid text message and having to restart the whole mission. BOGT fixed this to a small extent but it was still a very annoying mechanic.

2. Fix. The. Damn. Controls.

Every GTA game has been plagued by awful on foot controls.

The camera shakes all over the place if you try to look around while moving, always trying to centre itself on your back.. just give us the option to switch this off.

Niko's turning circle has the circumference of Rosie O'Donnell, the aiming and shooting are clunky as hell, the sticky cover system is slow and clumsy and your character always seems to have problems getting stuck on walls, corners or small objects.

EDIT: To the silly people saying 'DERP U JUST SUCK' - no. Stop it. Having the opinion that other games control better than this one does not mean you suck at it, and this is coming from someone who 100%-ed GTA4.

3. Better save/wait system

Don't make us drive halfway across the damn city to our one safehouse. Just let us save whenever we want. And if you're going to make missions only available at certain times, give us a 'wait' option.

4. Better tutorials

Black text boxes in the top left corner during gameplay have got to go. At least give us a log of all the tutorials in case we miss one because we're, y'know, trying to play the game at the same time.

Let us learn how to pilot a chopper before you make us chase down three speeding boats in it. Tell us how to do it, don't just expect us to know that it controls completely differently to every other chopper in the game.

5. More colours, customisation and opportunities for wacky fun

This is the most important one for me...

Let us be a fat dude with a massive afro and pink tattoo running around in yellow polka dot underpants beating people to death with a dildo again.

Share your thoughts, what you'd like to see Rockstar improve for GTA5.

I dunno about number 5, outside of the customization part. More wardrobe choices can't really hurt the series.

That's a matter of preference. I enjoyed GTA 4 and Saint's Row 2 in equal measure. I mean, they're both on my Top 10 Games of All Time list. Besides, I doubt R* could stand a chance against Saint's Row anymore in the "wacky fun" department. TBOGT tried to recapture that, and still felt lacking. Even in comparison to SR1...

But 1-4 are just poor game design in this generation of gaming. Even R* San Diego's RDR suffered from 2 and 3.

those are all very good points, and they are why i was so frustrated with GTA4 and put it down after a good 20 hours logged into it, all those things are minor annoyances that build up throughout the game, they aren't something you just pass by each time you replay the game, and thats why they are so damn annoying in the long run.

besides those awesome points i would maybe say add in some diversity to some of the levels, maybe have an underwater awesome part or maybe have an underground base somewhere where you have to do a super sweet nos jump off of a closing bridge to get there

overall its not a bad sandbox game, but please make those minor annoyances go away..a human being can only take so much of it

I'm going to have to majorly disagree with the controls--I thought the controls were smooth as hell, ESPECIALLY the combat system.

And the whole checkpoint thing...I don't see why games should baby us along the way. If you fail, you fail, you just have to try again and be better. Remember in linear PS2 games where checkpoints were few and FAR between?

I'd actually suggest they push on with the 'feel' of GTA 4, as Saint's Row pretty much has the crazy sandbox city game wrapped up. They however can capture a living, breathing city with a great overarching storyline and great characters for 5...I hope.

Well, as I'm on the PC, it's probably 'GTA out, Saint's Row in' for me.

I suggest they STOP shoehorning in racing missions that you need to place first in order to advance the story. Especially with the driving being what it is.

That's what stopped me playing GTA 4 AND San Andreas.

if i had to pick two things that should be implemented into the next GTA for it to be an immediate sell to me, then it would be these two.

i can't tell you HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES I HAD TO DO A SIMPLE "DRIVE HERE, SNIPE THOSE GUYS, PROTECT THAT GUY!" MISSIONS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!~

especially with the shitty controls on the cars, they're practically asking you to run a mile while shooting yourself in the foot

Please, please drop the girlfriends, especially when you chuck them into the story line. I don't want to lug around an extraneous person because the protagonist likes her: I, the puppeteer, don't give a shit about her.

Oh god. They were especially annoying in SA.

They may not call up often, but the dating bonuses were just too ridiculously good to pass on.

No money/weapon on death? YES PLEASE

And the GTA 4 girls offered shit benefits that only worked 50% of the time.

I would remove the activity requests altogether. I hated having my hit and run/ murder sprees interrupted by some stupid fuck-head asking me to go bowling.

I agree with all of them except for #5. If they want to make a very specific main character in order to tell a GTA IV or Red Dead Redemption style story, that's fine by me. There's Saints Row for all that wacky stuff anyway, so you can have the best of both worlds if you get both games.

#3 at the very least HAS to happen. Red Dead Redemption was TERRIBLE with having missions that only start at a certain time of the day and making you save until you're close and then just stand around until you can start the mission.

Babying? Proper checkpoints aren't babying. It doesn't make a game more difficult to make the player re-play the easy "get in the car, drive to pick up your allies, drive to the real part of the mission" if they die. It just makes it tedious and annoying.

Furthermore, if you still want to play without checkpoints, you can. Just save before each mission and reload if you die so you have to start all over again instead of using the checkpoint. Everybody can get what they want if there are checkpoints in the game.

Especially the ones with a short time limit AND needing to keep the car in pristine condition. Yeah, I'm going to get across the entire map in 2 minutes while avoiding all the terrible AI drivers who constantly cut you off or swerve into you.

Ah yeah, I ended up letting all the girls leave Nico after none of their stuff worked. I got so sick of calling the girl who was supposed to get the cops off your nuts and hearing "Sorry Nico, I can't do anything for you" when I only have one or two wanted stars.

IDK. It seems that whenever R* is trying to make me cry, they just end up unintentionally making me laugh. They just come off as pretentious.

I think it's kind of weird to play a serious criminal trying to reform himself in cutscenes and then drive down a crowded sidewalk in a van when I get back to the gameplay.
The story should be closer to American Psycho or Blues Brothers than Death Wish or Double Indemnity.

Most of all, I want to see the return of variety and rewards.
Variety of guns, vehicles, activities, and side missions. GTA4 was very lacking.
Rewards should be useable in-game like arsenals, stat upgrades, and respawning vehicles. An achievement trophy is not a reward... not to me.

I would also love to see another huge San Andreas sized map again.

I'd agree on pretty much all points. I'd love the see the refined shooting and solid gameplay of Red Dead Redemption[footnote]Seriously, those gunfights were fun. Ridiculously easy perhaps, but Marsten handled ten times better than Niko ever did, it was possible to play the entire game with no lock on (I did), and enemies reacted realistically to getting shot. The only thing they really needed to add was a difficulty setting for you not to be a bullet sponge. Honestly, with dead eye, I could waltz into an open area with 5 or more enemies in cover, and kill every single one with no hassle at all. Wow, this footnote's getting pretty long...[/footnote] with the wacky humour and customisation of San Andreas. And whilst a GTA game can be serious, it seems better suited to the likes of RDR or the upcoming L.A. Noire. Gta has always been about silly rampaging fun, and 4 got away from that too much.
