I guess I could have bought a Gibson but I looked at the money and thought "oh my god I can buy five Epiphones with that cash", so I bought five Epiphones instead.
I don't think there's enough of a difference in quality between Epiphone and Gibson to warrant the extreme price jump between the two brands. Most Epis that I've heard play and sound at least 90% as good as a Gibson, and I like the sound of the Wildkat I own a lot more than the nearest Gibson equivalents I've played (i.e an ES-175 with P90s as Gibson don't really do anything like the Wildkat). I think with Gibson in many cases you're paying a premium just for the name "Gibson" if you know what I mean.
I would say the same thing about Fender and Squier. I teach guitar and most of my students have Squiers, there's a bit of a variation between one Squier's sound and the next but basically they sound fine. Some of the workmanship is a bit rough and ready, plus they always need a setup out of the factory, but it's a serviceable sound, good enough to take on a stage.
Gibson and Fender are indeed overpriced for what you're getting, but to say there is little difference in quality compared to cheaper copies is stretching it a little.
My band's guitarist has a Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop and I assure you there isn't a single current-day Epiphone copy that comes anywhere near it. There is off course some personal taste factored in there, but even then I'd say the two are far apart. I've seen him use it to perfectly nail the sound of Jimmy Page, Slash, Angus Young and so on ..., something I haven't heard from any cheap copy. Though I must say that having a good amplifier can do as much if not more than a good guitar. I'll also admit there are copies, like 70's era Japanese copies, that come very close to the real thing. Who knows, maybe I'm just a little too demanding of instruments.
Anyways, back on topic. I'm a bassist/guitarist and these are my instruments:
Guitars:
Fender Telecaster, custom-built built using Warmoth parts
Hamer Studio
Gibson Les Paul Custom
Some cheap Ibanez acoustic I use to take along on trips.
Basses:
Alembic Anniversary Edition
Status Series I Custom Shop
Rickenbacker 4003
Schecter Stiletto Exotic with Bartolini pups
Ibanez Musician MC-924, fretless
Kramer 450b, mostly in the collection as a collectors item
I play any genre with the exception of most punk music.
