Gun Balancing Gone Bad

To show what I mean, I'm going to use Call of Duty 4's excellent multiplayer component to showcase how badly a developer can balance the weapons in a game. The first weapon you use is most likely to be the M-16 on the Assault Class. Unfortunately, this weapon in particular is viable to be used throughout your whole gaming 'life' in CoD4, due to the fact that it is a burst-fire rifle, and (with Stopping Power) will kill whoever you're pointing at in one squeeze of the trigger.

I seriously don't know which part of the crazy farm they took the man who thought 'Let's give everyone who starts an insta-kill rifle'. I understand you want to give new players a chance, but that's a little ridiculous, considering that now you see level 55 10th Prestige players running around using this rifle, thinking they're pro.

It just irritates me that these smug, annoying people think that they are better than anyone they come across because they use a gun which can only be described as retarded and unfair to other players. Don't get me wrong, I love Call of Duty, but getting spawncamped by someone called "iiXii k1ll33r su3pr pr0 iiXii" with a weapon that a five year old could use somehow starts to drag a bit after the eleventh match of whoring.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, NOT THE SUBJECT IN QUESTION. THE SUBJECT IS GUN BALANCING >_>.

Understand, people, what an EXAMPLE is?

Just because it's so good doesn't mean everyone uses it.
some people are good with other guns. and you get jst as annoyed when you get killed by them as you do when an M16 insta-kills you.

They wanted to get beginning players off the ground, and perhaps promote individuality by including such guns early, so that more experienced players would select their own preference?

I stopped using the red dot M16 at lvl 12, instead using the under appreciated shotgun w/grip until I unlocked my G36. At that point I stuck an ACOG scope on it, got to lvl 55, an just played with whatever I liked, or wanted to try out.

What I'm getting at is how stupid it is for a developer to put in a gun which basically instakills, is accurate, reloads quickly and you unlock it at level one. I'm not 'whining' I'm trying to start a discussion about what developers should do right when they take balancing the weapons into the equation.

Also, it's about players who DON'T stop using it after it's got them off the ground and don't experience any variation.

People who are telling me to stop whining are missing the point.

I like P90 and.... um... I can't remember what it's called, that russian sniper rifle? It's harder than the 50-cal and I like a challenge.

Which actually is exactly what happens, 10th 55ers not withstanding. I actually keep myself from getting to bored of using it by switching each gun with the next one of it's class every 25 or so kills, which has the added bonus of assuring my competency with each gun. The thing I learned from this is that the M16 is only the best if you're lazy.

Well then play better. I don't know what we're supposed to discuss, if you can't kill them competently that's your own fault.
If you don't know what to discuss, then don't speak, hmnm?

when I saw this thread topic, I immediately thought that this was a discussion on how guns should be balanced in games for realism.
---> i.e. *game name*
this game's shotgun sucks because you can use to blow people's body's apart at far range and this game doesn't use slugs in it's ammo.

i think he uses a silenced mp5 with UAV jammer, Stopping Power and something i dont remember. try that out. he says it kicks ass.

its meant to blow up people from range. nearly every game so far has completely underestimated a shotguns range. i think you can hit something 20-30 meters away in real life.

The M16 is no more overpowered than the MP5 or ACOG M40A3. The drawback to a burst-fire weapon is that you only realistically have 1 burst to kill the guy before his full-auto weapon mows you down. However, if you're good with it that drawback becomes meaningless, since you don't miss very often.

Does it suck that some weapons are better than others? Yes. All things considered though, CoD4 is a pretty well balanced game. You can use any weapon you want and do well with it once you learn the ins and outs of each.

Long story short, learn to deal with it or stop playing. The M16 is the most popular weapon for a reason: it's good.

ha no but seriously.. i dont get it. are you saying you should be able to take a direct hit from a 3-round burst of M-16 fire?

Bang on the money. If you don't like the mechanics, change the way you play. Some people love the M16's, others don't.

Just do what I do, when a player starts whinging about a weapon, map, chopper, whatever have you and all your friends target this one player with the grenade launcher (aka n00b-tube). This has two effects: 1) We ruin their fun as much as they have ruined ours and 2) Usually gets the idiot to leave in a hilariously immature manner.
