I must make characters of both genders to ensure I get all the juicy achievments my little heart desires. Anybody who thinks it's weird has a lower score than me! ;)

I think, that if you have the mind power(no jokes here) to play a female character, as a roleplayer, you have to make a "Female you"(speaking as a guy), a personality similar to your own, only with the "qualities" of a girl... ofc as stated above, if you dont have enough mind power(dont worry, most people do) you will turn gay, as this new persona you create take over the already existing one.

yeah... im crazy

please dont think what im saying is negative :)

I don't mind playing either. If you're a guy it doesn't mean you can't play a female character; after all, it's an option. It's just a matter of preference. Usually I have to play the opposite gender anyway, so I find it welcome change with RPGs that have playable female protagonists. I find the immersion more satisfying if I can fully relate to my character, so having her being the same gender helps.

There is nothing wrong with creating an opposite sex character for, say, Dragon Age, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and other single player RPG's. In those games your main character is kind of like a window into a fantastical story full of fantastical characters, and your main character is very limited to one of a few set personalities and responses. In other words, your character is in no way or form YOU.

It is weird for you to create a female character in a WoW or any other multiplayer RPG. Because in a multiplayer RPG, your character is a representation of YOU to other players. It is how they see you. If your an overweight 47 year old guy in a wheelchair having people see you (and in many cases treat you) like a skinny pretty elf chick, well that's both weird and disturbing. Even if your RP'ing, your voice is ultimately the voice of your character, your character IS YOU.

In some games like Phantasy Star, where different genders have different base stats, I like picking females because they're usually more accurate and agile, over the male's brute strength.

It's all part of role playing, being a male or female character.
What I hate is that we always take our "perception" of female character... so end up with a little less clothing that an actual "real life" girl would use.

Nope. If the options is there, why should you be forced to play as your own gender.
Besides, my first Dragon Age character is a Female Magi Elf.

Tell your girlfriend that the character in an RPG is not the same as you are.

If she can't comprehend that much and feels the need to be jealous over a few pixels, then perhaps you should work this out with her. Because if small things like this set her off, I can only imagine what she does when she notices a woman that happens to be observing you for a bit of time.

Meh. Doesn't matter to me. I usually do a female account after I'm done the game, just cause. I have a friend, though, that (although this might not count) in Pokemon, releases all the female pokemon he catches, no matter how powerful they are, just because they're female.

I haven't seen poll data on this more recent than 2003, and trying it on the Escapist would be a joke. We do not have a particularly diverse userbase. As of 2003, 45% of male poll respondents said they played female characters; 35% of female respondents said they played male characters.

Depends, is it Mass Effect? If it's Mass Effect I'd say you're making a mistake by playing a Male Character because Female Shepard is so much more awesome (personal opinion).

The first game I owned that you let you choose either a guy or girl character was Pokemon Crystal, and then Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. I remember the booklet that came with the game pointed out you start the game by choosing a male or female character, and in parthesis it said "(we strongly encourage you to pick a character the same gender that you are)" Why they went out of their way to say this, I don't know. My only guess could be they're afraid that a kid might have a gender identity crisis after picking a character of the opposite gender. But that's not a strong argument.

Now I've always chosen a character that was the same gender as me, a boy. After all, if this character is to represent me (the real me) in the game, it should be as close to reality as possible, including gender. I never thought twice about that. But then I met my male friend, a fellow Pokemon trainer, who would choose a female character for his character. Then another one of my male friends, not only chose his pokemon character to be female, but his World of Warcraft. Another interesting story is my other male friend. in RockBand, he made a male character for himself. But when he wanted a female character in his band, so he had a character to sing and play guitar, so he made one, a female one. He liked the female one better and started playing with her more often. This was all new to me, for a guy to make a female character. It always made sense to make the character the same gender as yourself, but made no sense to make the character a different gender. I always joke with them that they all have a serious labido problem. lol.

So I would say if you are trying to make character as realistic as possible, so you're putting yourself in the game, then I would say it should be the same gender. But if you're really trying to make this a role play, trying to play a totally fantasy role, then go ahead, make a character of a different gender, if that's what you want. It's interesting that some of you guys choose a girl because you say it's something to look at. Well, what about games like Pokemon, where there is nothing to look at, especially if the character is 10 years old. lol. And on that note, supposedly the Milo game, when it comes out, IF it comes out, will allow you to choose the gender (Milo or Millie). If you were to get that game, would you choose a male or a female?

I'm a person that needs to be able to relate to my characters, so I usually play as a female. But in games like Dragon Age/Mass Effect I don't feel like I have explored the entire game without playing it through at least a couple times as a male.
I actually tend to give my characters the same features as I have, like a slightly bigger nose, blonde hair & dark eyes etc etc, no matter what gender I play as :) Again; it's my need to be able to relate to the character.

Female characters in racing games tend to be easier to control (that's one's excuse and one is sticking to it fervently).

In fighting games, the girls tend to be faster and more reliant on combination attacks which I prefer to pure brawn.

In other games, it's down to personality really.

Because you can't have a witty conversation with large breasts.

I had recently bought Dragon Age (Yes, I know.. im a bit late to it all) and made my first character which was a Female Elf Rouge.

Upon doing this, my girlfriend gave me a brief lecture about why it was weird for a guy to make a female character. Its just something I have always done. In RPGs I make a Male Human Warrior, a Female Elf Rogue and a Male Elf Mage(or that RPGs varient).

Does anyone else see anything wrong with making a character of the opposite sex?
Nope, and it goes both ways.

I think the issue has a lot to do with personal association. A lot of people are in the somewhat unhealthy mindset of seeing a character in a game, especially an RPG (and most especially an MMORPG) as literally being them. People who detach themselves from this just do whatever they think will be fun. Also part of the appeal is looking at the female character graphics and playing "Dress up" and so on. A lot of girls claim they find this disturbing on a differant level since it comes down to patriarchal control, but at the same time they do a lot of the same stuff, especially when younger with dolls and the like.

When it comes to playing in an RPG, especially one online, where everything is entirely in character I don't even have problems with things getting sexual, though that doesn't happen very often. I see it as being no worse than authors writing characters of a differant gender.

I also think some of it is wish fulfillment fantasies of a sort. People creating the characters of a sort they like to read about and find interesting, or attractive.

Oh and as a final note, if you ever REALLY want to fire back in a case like this where a girl gets on your case, bring up the uncomfortable issue of fan fiction. See, while a guy might sit down and make a female character for an RPG or whatever, even if it gets wierd, I've noticed girls tend to do the same stuff on fan fiction forums where they write all kinds of twisted things involving their favorite pop culture. Someone might say "hey, it's really warped that your playing a lesbian Drow S&M queen" or whatever (if you go that far), but even in a case like that you can say point to girls who do things like say write slash fiction about Jacob and Edward from Twilight that in many cases gets as bad as it can get.

What's more the bigger a nerdess she is (and if she hangs out with a hard core gamer to begin with she probably is one) the more likely she's been churning out fan fiction, even if she doesn't talk about it much. Do a bit of snooping if you know her fairly well and can do so without driving her off (the her being most girls in this case). It's ironic but I've found most girls in situations like this can dish it out, but can't take it when you turn the tables and you will ALWAYS find something. Done correctly you can maintain a relationship and remove the mockery.

For all the "disturbing" stuff nerdy guys get into, girls are just as bad, and while I don't think it's been studied I'd guess that probably 80% of the gay porn out there is written by young girls. Awareness of this is increasing on it's own though, hence some of the Yaoi jokes (and straight guys being flattered that girls like them enough to creat stuff like that for their own amusement).

I generally make male characters (I'm female). It goes back to the days of gaming when you didn't get a whole lot of choice and most default protagonists were male. I just got used to it. And then when games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights offered more choice, I made a mix of female characters and male characters. Nowadays I'm back to playing male characters.

Why regress when more and more games are offering female choices? Well, it's because those female choices seemed to be aimed clearly at the male audience. I love Dragon Age, but look at the animations of the female characters. Not every woman sways her hips that way. In armor. Same with Mass Effect. I couldn't get past the fact that I didn't seem to be in the target audience, and that I was supposed to be titillated by my character's actions. Being straight, I wasn't. So I just switched over to a male character and made my own fun by romancing Zevran anyway.

Well, I generally do that with either Monster Hunter (Guy armor can look...bad) or TES, in which case there is actually a program where females have a higher disposition base than male characters (for most situations).

I like to make my female characters look as much like a man as possible and my male characters look as much like a woman as possible.

Traps turn me on D=

I usually play as a woman first playthrough though. A woman with a buzzcut and cargo pants ;D
