I had recently bought Dragon Age (Yes, I know.. im a bit late to it all) and made my first character which was a Female Elf Rouge.

Upon doing this, my girlfriend gave me a brief lecture about why it was weird for a guy to make a female character. Its just something I have always done. In RPGs I make a Male Human Warrior, a Female Elf Rogue and a Male Elf Mage(or that RPGs varient).

Does anyone else see anything wrong with making a character of the opposite sex?
Your girlfriend is weird. It's never bothered me, in fact I don't even think about it. My first Dragon Age character was a male human Warrior (don't be a warrior, they suck), but my second (the one I played most of the game with) was a female elf Mage. Frankly, I kinda forgot the character was female, and just thought of them as the character.

I'll generally make a male character out of habit, then a second female character to see what different options/dialogue I get.

Your girlfriend doesn't know what she's jabbering about.

I make characters of both genders; it all depends on what idea I have in mind for a character at the time.

In MMOs I often make female characters, because it saves me from the inevitable femnazies that invade eventually and go on a man-hating rampage across every server they can get their claws into.

Last thing I need is for someone to stalk me just so they can harass me for having a Y chromosome and 600 years of oppression I wasn't a part of.

I have no problem with female characters when it suits or surrounds a story or even genre. What I have a problem with is the introduction of Aine as a Gear along with her friend Sergant Annnoying standard female character.

Gears is a Gritty, rough tough, BOYISH brute world filled with everything I loved as a young boy, Mud Blood and all sorts. Sp to introduce Aine as one of the guys is a bit of a cop out to me.
Do you mean Anya in Gears of War? If so you have missed the point of the game. It isn't a boyish world, nor is she added as a token female.
Yeh, you kinda have. I personally think its awesome they added her. Its just showing that they are basically fucked and are recruiting everyone.
I got that very quickly before they added "Anya", remember Gears 2 Dizzy was a stranded? and not the only one to be recruited.

theres nothing wrong with it as long as you're not jacking off to your avatar, or one of those kids in runescape who whore their avatars out.

slightly more (less?) on topic, i made my in-game guy a girl once for a bit, and i couldn't get over how weird the whole thing felt. it's not for me. also i was getting weird looks from my brother :p

I have been roleplaying on forums for approximately six or seven years now and about 90% of my characters nowadays are female. Presently I joined a Final Fantasy and took up the roles of Yuna and Ashe respectively. Initially I had similar insecurities as your girlfriend apparently does, in believing playing the opposite gender was somehow abnormal or "gay". Personally I find it a welcoming change, alongside a fairly decide challenge. With a male character, when I am having difficult there is that subconscious tug to relate your own actions to the aforementioned. With the opposite gender you are forced to determine their general outlook.

Not to mention, when women frequently praise your writing of female characters, you know you have captured the character well. Certainly is a pleasant compliment to receive.

Even if I play characters the same way, I find it much easier to role play as a female than a male. Consoles, tabletop, it makes no difference. Females provide a more involving gameplay experience for me.

That probably reveals great insights into my personality, but I can't be arsed analysing myself. I'd probably lie.

It's pretty normal for people to create characters of the opposite sex, everyone I know does it and it is essential in some games that have different dialogue dependant of the sex of the character your playing if you want to see all the different scenarios.

^ That always makes me cringe, after a few years of playing WoW as a rogue, the amount of people I met that spelled it wrong now makes me cringe whenever I see it...

I see nothing wrong with it. Variety is nice. I haven't really done it though: I once made a female dark elf in Oblivion, but by that time I had already "finished" the game twice, so I didn't really play with her.

Edit: I called her something like Ilke, and was going to sculpt her after a character in a book.

I suppose it's like wearing your girl friends underwear: hey what ever floats your boat but you really shouldnt be proud about it (or even mention it) xD

Yeah I don't really see a problem with it, it's not something I generally do, but its not like its bad. When I have an option to create a character, I usually attempt to create myself, so female characters aren't really my thing. If I do make a female character, she won't have anything to do with me and I'll make a backstory up for her in my head.

I like the "role-playing" aspect of RPGs.

No, considering I usually make male avatars while being female and I've seen guys do the opposite. I don't see any harm in it myself.

I agree, I model the character after myself.
I suppose the earlier games where only male was the choice I had differ on that.
I honestly don't think anything is wrong with that. Even if it is just for 'eye candy'. I suppose what ever keeps you playing the game.

It isnt really like 'wearing your gf's underwear' (few posts back) unless you like perving on yourself in girls underwear.

Excuse me Im irish "Anya" is spelt Aine here. Yes it is a boyish world, its not by description, to describe it I would say its a War destroyed chaotic wastland littered with the last remnants of humanity. But inside this world with the face as Ive described above is Chainsaws, Blood, Guns and Cave dwelling monsters. Very much so a boyish world, The ONLY soft piece in the Gears series is Doms hunt for his wife which he promptly finished the story arc with the help of a Magnum.
That's pretty damn sexist.

Not all guys love blood and guts and not all girls want to grow up as a princess and own lot's of ponies you know. I have come across more females playing Gears of War online than any other game I have played.

I have nothing against playing a female character. I usually do it on my second playthrough though. But in some cases, (Fallout 3) I end up preferring my female character to my male, because I know what I'm doing the second time around.

Simply explained: guys like having some eye candy. I imagine it's the same for girls as well. Not to mention games like Mass Effect where you continually get side-boob shots and ass-level cameras -- I'd rather be seeing a girl's butt in those shots than a dude's.
I decree that nobody else shall use any part of the phrase "If I'm going to be staring at an ass for several hours, it might as well be a girl's" or any such thematic variants.

Besides, a female Shepard has a voice that would please any feminist but would put off even Hulk Hogan.

In any case, I find that I connect more with a game if I play as a guy.

Then again, watching my female Shepard snuggling with Kelly in Mass Effect 2 was pleasantly arousing.
