Did this girl ask for the presents or was it the guy's idea? If the girl asked for them, then she's obviously using him. If it was something he did to impress her, then I'd say he has some serious deusions about romance (the later would explain the whole ignoring friends thing).
Either way, and say him going back to her is a result of a fear of being single or a need for a status quo that exceeds his need for happiness. Both of these moronic ideas are depressingly in men and women.

If you go to a party/pub/whatever you go to, with a bunch of male friends, there's a very high chance that someone will bail, in an attempt to get to a girl.

Well, I mean, come on. In this day and age meeting someone online really isn't that big of a stretch. I mean, ya...it hardly ever works out but still.

I'd say turn the tables, instead of dealing with him abandoning you, abandon him. Have everyone except a select few to remove him from their friends list. And if it works out as planned, he'll come crawling back, hopefully wiser.
Of course it could backfire, but thats all I got.
And both guys and girls do this shit all the time. I know a girl who is hooked up with this total asshole, and all he does is talk down to everyone and threatens people. He even got her to start doing drugs. (Granted me and my friends stoped that real quick). She broke up with him many times, each time swearing never to go back, yet she keeps going back.
