In any case, I believe this guy needs to learn the hard way that this lady is only using him. Her manipulative nature and his oblivion to said nature will be his potential downfall.

No it's not normal, at least for me and my friends it isn't. But we don't look for love on the internet, and I have never met an online friend in person on purpose. I think the guy is just needy as a person and should get out more, and also lacks a certain level of self respect and pride. Just tell him to man the fuck up.

I honestly think that there is very little that can be done for the guy. Some men have this problem where they get so obsessed with a person that it overrides all common sense. When that happens, there is very little point in saying "You're acting like a jerk, and your girlfriend is a parasite" because he won't even listen. Few things astound me more than the human mind's capability for self deception and this is a prime example of this.
