I wanted to know why a moe looking character kicked so much ass, so I played as Momohime in Muramasa. Then I found out it was a girls body that was being inhabited by a samurai's soul, and someone's junk wasn't happy after finding that out. So then I continued to play as the angsty, love-stricken, amnesiac that was the male character. Yay for variety.

...damn you Cloud.

That funny, that's what i always say. Do we know each other? Anyways, yes. I tend to play Female character because i prefer the female anatomy. If i don't play female, it because i want to play a version of myself in this world. Since i'm always stuck to be a dwarf, i don't play male often.

Funny thing: Me and my best friend, we look like the young Super Mario Brothers. I'm Mario
and he is Luigi. The thing is, where more into beard than mustache so we both have a Pinch!

Edit: Some errors removes.

Another one of these threads? Well, I can say I make my choice based upon what race, class, and gender I feel fits what I want to portray best. Usually this also takes animations and how they look into the fold. The only MMO I play is WoW... and I cannot stand most of the male character models in terms of sheer buffness (most are only really suited to what I would attach to a warrior, paladin, or death knight), along with some of them genrally having poorer animations or less thought out animations compared to thier female counterparts (*cough *forsaken males and their animations using a staff or polearm *cough*)

So generally, i pick whatever race/gender combo that I feel best represents the class I wish to play.

Pretty much this.

Plus Jennifer Hale is just a better VA than Mark Meer. Sorry Mark, you're good and all, but you don't hold a candle to Hale :(
This is me too.

Ultimately it comes down to my mood at the time, what I'm trying to create. Sometimes works better as girl, sometimes a guy.

To use an already over-used reason, in third-person games, I want to ENJOY staring at someone's ass. Perverted? Probably. Practical for my mindset? Most DEFINITELY.
This has been said many times before, but never better. Kudos.

For advantages. In Fallout 3, the Black Widow perk is more useful than the Lady Killer perk. Only the females can get the first perk, and only the males can get the second.

To be honest, I've played a male character in games for years and I vastly prefer playing as a female simply because it's an excellent change of pace. By playing a female my mindset goes from "Oh goodie, I'm yet another macho man who's bound to be the hero and try to score with Abrasive Eye Candy. *sigh*" to "Okay lads, we're going to accomplish our goals and be sensible about how we do them. Frank, stop grunting, we're not impressed by your posturing.".

Guys are decent to play and all, but there's just so many games with male protagonists. It gets old playing steroid junkies or androgynous waifs that I don't consider to be aesthetically interesting.

I prefer the slightly more sexist, "because if I'm going to be staring at ass, it might as well be GOOD ass."

It depends. Aesthetics certainly are a factor, but it depends a lot on the player. For some it's as simple as the above quote, for others they've kind of grown out of the point where they're inhabiting the character--which seems to be the singular point of view of those opposed to playing the opposite gender in a game--and into the point where they're authoring the character. It's de-personalized somewhat, the goal being less to represent your own personality and more to just come up with what seems like a fun idea for a character in general--and sometimes it's a woman.

I prefer females, although it really doesn't matter that much for me.

EDIT: Oh yes, in Mass Effect 1 & 2 definitely female. Jeniffer Hale is much better at voice acting than Mark Meer.

Well, online I usually play as a male character. The only game I play as a female is Fallout 3, which is more of a tactical choice because I've found that the Black Widow ability is more effective than the Ladykiller ability.
