It is an old game, what do you expect? They have learnt some new things since then.

It's not weak just because it isn't as polished as their newer things, that's just how the advancement of technology works.

Might as well. Halo 2 for Bungie. Weakest game of the trilogy, turned Xbox LIVE into a monster.
I would've said Halo 3...

No, wait, never mind, the ending of Halo 2 where he just goes "I'm going to finish this fight." makes it worse.

OT: Yeah, I'd tend to agree up until a point, and that point being that L4D2 was just L4D with melee weapons.

Counter strike is. Such a boring game.

I still love HL2.
Counter-strike... which was a fandom mod of HL1, wasn't it? And can't really be attributed to Valve.
The original Counter-Strike was a fanmade mod that gained MASSIVE revenue once it became sold in retail, I have no idea what Condition Zero is and Source was just a port to the new engine released under Valve's name. I'm surprised how much hate it gets, I played and loved it for at least a year or so.

But yeah, Ricochet is their weakest game by far. It has like, 3 maps and 0 players.

You know, the thing that makes any game good is actually the content of the game, not how the developer treats it seven years after it's release.

Inexperience with the engine didn't stop Valve from delivering on the aspects of the game everyone actually LOVES about it. Did inexperience with the engine stop them from delivering one of the, if not THE, best examples of using the environment to tell a story? Sure they did that Miraculously well in L4D too, but it wasn't in any way bad in HL2...

Or the great gunplay....which was.... better in L4d, okay, I admit.

What about the puzzles, though.....oh...right.... Portal.

Okay so you have a point that as they gained experience, though refined individual aspects of Half-Life through separate games. HOWEVER, none of the other games combine all those elements as seamlessly as HL2 did. It is, quite literally, more than the sum of it's parts, and Hence....is not Valve's weakest game. This is:

That game didn't really change at all from the first. Hell I still think the first one's better.
Totally agree.

Tired topic is tired, no matter how you dress it up. I forgot this sort of thing might happen come the release of Portal 2. Every silver lining has a cloud, as they say....

Oh for the love of...

People hold the game to high standards because it set a precedent for a number of things. Precedents that not many others beyond Valve surpass (pacing, storytelling, voice acting, writing, mute protagonist). Other elements, such as the general gameplay will, naturally, be harder to return to as others games progress.

Anyway, I personally think Episode 2 is the best of the Half-Life games. Fantastic ending, more varied gameplay, beautiful setting, moments of extreme tension; its brilliant.

Anyway, just finished the Portal 2 single player.

Fan. Fucking. Tastic.

Beyond belief.

Sorry OP, but I have to disagree with you. After a couple years hiatus from the Half-Life series, I recently played through all four games (HL1, HL2 and the episodes) from start to finish in the time span of about two weeks. Even though I had experienced the games before, I was very nearly blown away. The engine has aged beautifully, the level design is top notch and the gameplay variety is almost unparalleled. I know this sounds like I'm gushing but I was tremendously impressed by how well the game has aged.

As far as "being unable to get a consistent framerate in Half-Life 2" goes, that seems more like a system problem than anything else. I run the game at 1680x1050 with all the bells and whistles turned on, 16xAA at 60fps; no slowdown whatsoever. And I do it on a midrange PC (8800GT, 2.6ghz Dual Core processor).

Anyways, that's just my $0.02

I loved Half Life 2, still do.

I'll even go through all the episodes every now and then when I'm in the mood for a Half Life marathon. It's just aged is all, the console version runs a lot smoother OP.

Be thankful that at least they didn't clutter up the game with inane stupid pointless and incongruous hats. Way to ruin the art direction for the sake of making money. I preferred it when Valve were a bit more subtle about this sort of thing, rather than advertising every time I open the game because the Mann. Co store has some item for sale.

But I come from a time in the Tf2 world when there were no hats and everything was simpler and cleaner looking, I'm just bitter.

QFT.
Reskinned L4D with nothing new or innovative added.

According to the reviews, Portal 2 is Valve's strongest game, but how will the voters decide?

Let's play, The Weakest Link.

Your metric mostly comes down to Valve's lack of development experience at the time, and by that rationale HL1 should be their weakest game. Besides, Half Life 2 was a big step forward in terms of digital acting, atmosphere, and game storytelling that still holds up to this day - Alyx Vance is still praised as one of gaming's most memorable characters.

And I don't think it's the developer's responsibility to make sure that patches work with fanmade mods. If you're goofing around with their product, that's your prerogative, not theirs.

It was co-opted by valve, they released plenty of updates for it, and then released counter-strike source (which I find boring as hell)

So yes, it can.

I wish someone remade this game properly, as in with the story included, stupid and boring stuff removed, less talk (or made more sensible), usable weapons, proper collision detection etc etc.
http://www.blackmesasource.com/

I'll just leave this here.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been much word about this lately so I'm not sure if the team is still working on it.

That's not a reason, I never liked the halo games at all except halo 2, but I only played the SP, over and over again.

Couldn't agree more, HL2 is great and no developer has such consistent quality through all there games as valve does, but compared to everything else HL2 was kind of boring

Halo 2 still is my favorite Halo game. I personally think Halo 3 was their weakest. I'm a Halo fanboy, and even I didn't really care much for it.

Totally agree with you. Whenever Halo is mentioned, all that pops into my head is memories of halo 2!

As for the Valve part of this, I've never been a Valve fan really, and when I played Half-Life, it was two years ago, and it did next to nothing for me. I'm sure for when it was made, it was kind of revolutionary, but I don't see how it could have stood the test of time.
