I've never played the first (too young; no copy; don't want to buy off Steam as I now have a widescreen and the res fucks every game over 5 years old up).
You can always get HL:Source. It's the first HL game in the source engine.Should work out fine.

OT:I own all of them.But i have only beaten 1 and 2.

I would have to agree with you Tankenstein, anyone who hasn't played any of the Half Life games (except HL2EP1 which is mediocre) should definitly look to purchase one. They simply are a great experience and were very ahead of their time in many respects, the Source Engine in particular looking incredible at the time of HL2's release.

Now all we have to do is wait 15 more years and 10 more L4D's for HL2EP3 to come out!

I played the first one and its expansions as a kid. I liked to do the training and early game over and over. I play games differently, now :p

Haven't finished playing through 2 and all its continuations.

I made this thread because of my growing concern that too many pc gamers haven't played the original half-life, half-life 2, half-life 2 ep 1, half-life 2 ep 2. I strongly recommend that everyone who hasn't played those, should definetly play them.

Btw read the whole thread, at least some pages, you will find that alot of people haven't played it so stop saying everyone has.
Pretty much anyone and everyone on the Escapist is somewhat of a Valve fanboy, Tankenstein.
We've played these games no doubt.
We have played them so much that I think everyone can spot a symbol or character from any of the Half-Life games, and say: "THATS IT! THATS IT RIGHT THERE! THE LAMBA SYMBOL FROM HALF-LIFE!"

Who's a PC gamer and hasn't played the Half-Life games?
Me. Unless you count playing the demo of Half-Life 2 for a few minutes. I frankly can't see what all the fuss is about. I've never been a big FPS fan, other than when it comes to the Left 4 Dead series and Medal of Honour: Pacific Assault, and puzzles put me off.
I think your previous sentence should demonstrate why you don't get all the fuss. I can't remember the last time a demo made me want a game - and a few minutes is hardly time enough.

The puzzles aren't hard; they're logic puzzles, making the most of the physics engine really. Not like the ones where the answer is totally illogical, only making sense to the developers.

I'm not saying it's that great, i'm saying you can't call yourself a pc gamer if you haven't played them. Agree about system shock though.
The hell you can't. It was a long time before I played a Half-Life game, and I felt no more the PC gamer afterward for it.

I'll even go so far as to say that Half-Life 2 was highly irrelevant to FPS when it was released. By the time it came out, games were already jumping on the Halo bandwagon. While it was still a technical marvel at the time, it's gameplay mechanics were all but antiquated. Even Doom 3 felt like more of a step forward.

I happen to agree with the OP. PC is the console that not only defines proper gaming, but Defines VALVe. VALVe also do a good job of defining PC among the market. To not have played the Half Life games (at least HL2) is to be outside the crowd of proper gaming.

Lol disregard that if you can't play it, or have a natural tendency to hate FPSs.

On this subject: L4D and L4D2 are also awesome. PLAY THEM =D

I've been playing HL1 recently on my laptop, 1280x800. It works great and it actually looks fucking cool. They kept the goldsrc engine up to date because of Counter-Strike's popularity so it plays well with all kinds of resolutions.

ALSO: I'll throw this out there: if anyone here is interested in playing through with an XBox 360 controller (which is what I'm currently working on) I can provide the config file and help you get set up. It certainly adds an additional challenge but it's perfectly playable. I haven't once had to resort to my mouse to get past any obstacles and I'm pretty damn close to reaching the lambda complex.

That's just fucking silly. Doom 3 was only a step forward technologically, and even if it did have double the texture resolution I think people will agree that the faces in Half-Life 2 are MUCH easier on the eyes. It was a technical marvel, and the physics gameplay was brand new and blowing people's minds, and even though many games had attempted it none had really accomplished the immersive quality that Half-Life 1 possessed, while Half-Life 2 managed to improve it considerably. Highly irrelevant, that's a fucking laugh. I'm positive it wasn't just me and my friends chomping at the bit when this thing finally came out.

I have played the original half-life when it first came out, same for half-life 2 and the episodes. It was groundbreaking technology every time again (except for the episodes) and that is why everybody should have played it no matter what.
Something being groundbreaking in the past doesn't mean you should play it at present. I mean, have you ever used an early phonograph because of how groundbreaking they were? It's essentially the same thing, and to be completely honest, the first Half-Life games have aged badly. They were clunky and look terrible, which isn't necessarily bad, but it's hard to establish a really compelling atmosphere if it all looks so terrible. They're good games and fun to play, but there are better games that are more fun these days.

If you want my honest opinion, wait for Black Mesa Source for the original Half-Life. It'll look better and will be easier to play in general. Half-Life 2 is definitely worth your time, however I don't think it's an absolute requirement to play any of the games in the Half-Life series.

Every game Valve makes should be played by anyone that owns a system that can.
I disagree. They're the most celebrated mediocre game developer of all time. Team Fortress 2 is excellent. Portal is almost as good a pass-time as N. Half Life 1 was alright in its time and Half Life 2 always was and always will be a passable second rate FPS.

They hit and miss (sometimes very badly), just like *everybody* else.

They're alright. I haven't played the ones before HL2, and personally I think HL2 and what I've played of Ep1 is... mediocre.

I just can't get into them. There is so much hype about them that when I bought the Orange Box off Steam, mainly for TF2 and Portal, I thought that I might as well play what was supposedly every PC gamers wet dream.

I admit I was hooked at first, but the interest slowly drained away, and when I finish HL2 I realised I wasn't looking forward to playing Ep1. This generally isn't a good sign in games, where you have bought the games sequel, but have you force yourself to play it simply to try and rationalise the money spent on it.

By no means are the Half Life series bad games, but I don't see why they are the most amazing thing since sliced bread.

Just my honest opinion. I've tried to explain it the best I can. I did not enjoy the Half Life series.

Yeahh, a lot of gamers haven't played those.

APART FROM EVERY FUCKING VALVE WHORE ON THIS FORUM
This is because Half-Life is so fucking kickass that you can't have played it and not be a Valve whore.
Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 are both MUCH better games then Half Life 2. Hell, I've gotten more fun out of Counter-Strike!
