To all those people out there who consider this as them protesting:
All the player's playing Halo 2 for so long was not in protest of them stopping the servers, I did it for about 5-6 hours with a bunch of my friends and pretty much all of us were playing in support of bungie and a great game. Bungie and Microsoft even supported us in the marathon that why they did not kick us off striaght away and allowed some of the more "Hardcore" players to play for 8 whole days, and to show there support for the cause there giving some of the players prizes...

To all those people who find the activity sad:
Sure there were alot of things these players could be doing alot more productive with their time, But the key word of that sentence is "Their". These player's spending anything from 1 hours to 8 days is not a single second of your time. (Sure the Article you've just read might of took you some time, But you could of cancel that at any time.) Also these player's were having the final remainder of fun they could have on this game (Platform) untill it was gone forever.

Why is anyone still playing Halo 2? There are so many better games on the PS3. Have they never played Killzone 2?
Halo 2 doesn't even have ragdoll physics.
It barely even had any good weapons and the vechiles didn't even blow up properly, according to their actual schematics....
I wish these people would just grow up.

All I can derive from this is that it is a valiant, if not stupid effort on the part of the Halo 2 Live gamers. Long live stubborn people!!! I enjoy being one in your ranks!

Microsoft sucks, because I tryed to download Splinter cell Chaos theroy and It wouldn't downlaod, it hits 30% and stopss,If they said someting like "This game is no longer avaliable", then I would have been one sad panda who still has 1200 MS points, but now it just won't downlaod and now I'm one sad panda thats ready to fart in Bill gates face next time I see him. o, and back to the topic, these guys are great for stickingh it to MS

...Small victories, right?...
Wrong. Its not a victory because there is not battle to been victorious in. Microsoft aren't fighting these people.
These people are making a stand for something they love and Microsoft appear to be happy to let them for now.

Good for them, maybe Bungie should send them copies of Halo 2 PC as reward, or distraction.
AHAHAHA.

Whew. Good one.

You do realized there are a lot of poor people, and even more than usual despite the alleged recovery of the economy (according to the stock market). Some day it might be you who can't afford a new generation console.
I can, but I still play just my PS2 and GC. Cause I'm cheap.

That said, I think Microsoft is in the wrong here. Simply put I feel those people are entitled to play the games they bought online indefinatly. That's part of the product they puchused. To me the only way Microsoft should be turning off their servers or support of those games should be if it goes out of business entirely.
That strikes me as--how do I put this nicely--economically infeasible. Bungie kept the servers running for five years and change, for over two years after the sequel came out, and over three years after the original X-Box was discontinued. They were being generous.

I understand other points of view on this, but to me this pretty much summarizes why I am against the idea of games going digital, or relying on digital connections in general. Right now we're seeing exactly why buying a game that is dependant on the company in any way is a bad idea.
Five years and more of online gameplay. Just throwin' that out there.

I imagine in 10 years or so we'll hear about how Assasin's Creed 2's support servers are going offline and nobody will be able to play their copy of AC2 anymore.
If you bought AC2 and you knew about the DRM, you made a bad choice in the first place. Besides, I think Ubi said they'd provide an unlock code if they were taking the servers down-or was that EA with spore? I get them confused. Point is, it's generally not worth buying PC games with crap DRM like that. And not worth pirating them either.

Strictly speaking I feel that if I bought a copy of a game, I have the right to just up and play it online 10 years later on an old machine if I get the hankering. By the same token even if the servers are deserted for decades at a time, I feel a group of Octogenerians in an home down the road would have the right to all login to Halo 2 with their antique X-boxs and play a few rounds for nostolgia if they wanted to.
They can. They'd just have to LAN. I wouldn't expect Sega to still have SegaNet up. I disagree with your opinion that people should get to play with their games forever.

I checked the LIVE TOU [http://www.xbox.com/en-US/legal/LiveTOU.htm] and it says they can discontinue the service at any time, which is a pretty standard section for any online gaming service. If said octogenarians didn't read the contract when they signed up, too bad for them.

There's comes a point at which you just have to say:

'Dude, let it go, it's a game!'

I may be a fan myself, but this is so far beyond the normal it's not even heroic or brave or anything.

It's just monumentally stupid. Ah well, their life, their choices.
Too bad they don't put this kind of passion into bettering the world :p.

But that's an unfair expectation of my I suppose.

Its like the thing that happens to people in prison, I forget the name, where they can't make it on the outside because they've been on the inside for too long.

Those poor lost souls.
You're looking for the word institutionalised, and also, it doesn't apply in this sense, so a more apt formulation of words would be "thoroughly dependent".

Halo 2 still sucks, and the fact only 24 players are out there should be proof :)

Anyway, I had thought you could play Halo and Halo 2 on the 360 online after a patch?

I was one of the last few players online, the last time i played there was only 8 people online and they were all in my lobby, when i woke up the next day there was noone left.
I dont think it is stupid to stay logged on like that and anyone who thinks it is has obviously never had one of their favorite games get shut down or has never liked any game enough.

I stayed online to show my support for halo 2 and bungie. How many ways can you think of to show how much you like a game besides being one of the last people to play it. I just wish i was the one who logged the last kill.

That's funny. All I can really do for these guys is give a chuckle and say, "That's cute."
Guess they have to go play Halo 3 now...

Stick it to the man! I support your cause!

I get the idea, but isn't it time to sell your XBox and get yourself a X360 with HALO 3? I thought all HALO fans allready did?

I do get that it's pretty annoying to have something you spent hours and hours to master removed for EVER.

Well, much love to the hardcore posse, respect.
And @Bungie: Give em a copy of HALO 3. They deserve it.
