Don't act like Rock band was innovative there are games with drums and singing already out there. The game I was leaning towards was Portal with the creative thinking and the nice simple two portals and creative thinking to stop eight or so auto guns when it would take Master Chief a few grenades and a toss in the guns general dirction.

I believe any game that is a sequel or prequel shouldn't even be considered a game for innovation when they are an imitation of the original with some with some shiny new paint and a new toy or two to play with.

I really think that most game critics and reviewers today never played a game made that wasn't on a console before 1996. There were custom maps and mini-mods over ten years before Halo 3 was released. And if they're talking about the awesome gameplay of Halo multiplayer, we also had Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.

I'm not a "this game sucks because I don't like it" type of dude. I know there are people that like Halo 3, and if they do, I'm glad they found something they enjoy. But calling it innovative for including things that have been a standard part of most PC and some console FPS's for quite some time is just kind of, well... lame.

Silly me, I thought I bought it to see how the trilogy ended. Sure multiplayers great, but I won't lie that I was more excited to see if they killed the Chief off (still kinda cheesed about the ending too).

Then again, apparently I'm dim witted.

Now for the actual conversation:

I thought Portal was required to win "Most Innovative" or "Most Original" and fuel the need for cake?

Really, this entire thing stinks of trying to get the halo 3 fan boys to love their site. They give a popular title an award, someone notices, and suddenly the fan boys will defend their site too because of this award. Its better to leave it alone and say oh well, another stupid award for a game that doesn't deserve it. So long as you don't care, no one else will.

All the things Halo 3 did have been done before but Halo 3 brought all these good ideas together and executed them really well. Not only did they add Forge, they let you play in Forge with a whole party of friends and then let you share your creation with all the other thousands of players. They gave you the ability to create almost any game type so you could play the game exactly as you wanted in a map that was exactly the way you wanted it to be. All this stuff can be shared on bungie.net and all your stats are automatically tracked. Hell, you can download files from bungie.net onto your xbox, something which Microsoft is now trying to implement for Marketplace.

The award isn't just for innovation but for interactive innovation and Halo 3 is one of the most interactive experiences. They chose the game that they thought was the most innovative and I can see why they gave Halo 3 the award.

I dunno. Innovative? No. Setting the bar for the quality of the multiplayer service? Yes. And in fact that's what it was awarded for.

"Ultimately it is the integration and coherence of Halo 3's online content that makes the game stand apart. From its Theater mode to Forge, and the way a party playing through Live can seamlessly manoeuvre between them, here is an experience that demonstrates an unparalleled understanding of the potential for console online play. Outside of the game, Bungie.net has been engineered to become a remarkable resource for Halo 3 stats and communities, providing life for the game even when your Xbox 360 is switched off. Halo 3, just as Halo 2 did before it, presents a roadmap for the way online will be integrated in videogames in the coming years."

Which makes sense, but I still can't grasp how that's really innovation. It's adding in a couple new game types, and then just improving everything that everyone else has done so it's more shiny like, guv.

I love how they give the "innovative" award to a game IN A SERIES. Portal was something new. I'm fairly sure that's the meaning of "innovative".

And this is how bungie responded to EDGE,

They mention they are working on something big, which I like :)
possibly a full-blown map editor with AI/bots?

Discuss.

The two games that you mentioned, however, didn't take their contents seriously unlike what Halo3 did. If you combine all of the contents in Halo3 together while having friends, it's simply phenomenal. The only reason why people bought Halo3 was for it's single player and multi player, only to see it become boring later on. That is because those people never gave the game a chance. They ignored Forge and Theater as if it was nothing, making Halo3 go down hill in award ceremonies.

It shows how dim witted we gamers are.
That's great and all, but that doesn't make the features innovative. People seem to be completely misunderstanding what the word innovative really is. It means something that hasn't been done before. While these features in Halo might have been expanded upon and polished very well, they certaintly didn't start with Halo 3, thus making Halo 3 not innovative.

I think that its a stupid decision to give it to Halo 3 also.

I don't think Edge knows what the word innovative actually means.

It doesn't mean your favorite game, it means brings something new and unseen before to a game. Halo 3 is a 3rd person shooter and there is nothing new about it.

There are a thousand other games that deserve it before Halo.

Edge have just shown how stupid they truly are... and how they too, have probably been bought by M$.

For it's multiplayer (ie. half the game). I liked Call of Duty 4's multiplayer better as well as it's single-player. I think Halo 3's biggest innovation was recordings and forge, and not much else.

Wait, so they're making fun of the award by complaining about the repetitive re-use of their own material?
