the units are pretty weird. but its pretty hard to develop an rts game with dozens of different units and incorporate it with something like Halo, a FPS game.

The books themselves had a few differences from the game, in Fall of Reach, the spartans were evenly matched with the elites, which isnt the case in the game. And there isnt much literature on ODSTs .

I think for an RTS game, its not bad. Especially for xbox, its very user-friendly. The game doesn't spend too much time on research techs and buildings, you just make a shit-ton of units and send them into the fight.
Go play on Legendary (The real halo), then tell me that they aren't evenly matched, If you feel like reenacting the whole thing, strip away the shields.

its too linear for an RTS and most of the units are useless if you have a bunch of wart hogs.
it feels like it was just a mediocre game they slapped the Halo brand name on because they knew it would sell.

I think this is the first case in which the game sucked in theory. The idea is genuinely bad but i think (after playing the demo) that halo wars is surprisingly fun to play and easy to use. Its enjoyable to make an enmy base yours to build an army the size of Africa and realize that you are now capable of giving every singly one of those foot soldiers which you just produced en masse a RPG. Combined with surprisingly smooth controls (although movement is a bit dodgy) the game is surprisingly good though it's not very high on my "To buy" list. I am a halo 3 hater and i honestly see some pretty good things in this game. It's not too good but its fun.

My only problem with it is the lack of content.
I know that it's only a demo but still.
That and the fact that you can't play as the flood.

From all I know, Harvest got glassed, Yet it doesn't look like that at all in the game. Now that, I dislike.
*/POTENTIAL SPOILER*
Actually that's a good point. It's disputed to whether Harvest was completely glassed or just partially. If it was completely glassed then it would become a barren inhabitable wasteland with no atmosphere but Halo Wars does show the north pole mostly intact. It's very likely most of Harvest was glassed but small areas and the north pole were left intact.
If you read the books, you find out that they

/Spoiler
didn't glass the entire planet, because they are searching for "holy relics"

Actually I've read Contact Harvest. Granted it's been awhile since I have, bit over a year, and I forgot about those. Thanks for reminding me.

One problem I have, no human sniper squad so far, scarabs are not even strong(against infantry sure but go against 2 vultures and your screwed). No Elite squads, I mean sword is fine but I was under the impression that Elites carried 2 weapons? You can't put anyone into formations or into batallions. I also do not like the point system in the campaign, you have to build a massive army or you won't be able to complete the objective, and yet there is a time bonus? I had to get the limited edition because I wanted the Honour Guard Wraith, which is bull.

Granted, I missed a book since they don't sell them here, but now the books contradict each other?
Well then, I'll apply the stupid theory of, The book that came first, is the correct one.

Not that much of a spoiler, but I just got another rant in my arsenal against the Halo wars wrong doings.

Huh, honestly I were hoping for the flood to be in but, that was before I read the books and before I read up on everything, now it's just... "Shrugs" meh.

And with a system like that, how could you ever make the whole assimilation alien-ripped thing work?
Why what else is wrong with it? Aside from that I think its a very good game.

And yeah the people who complain about the flood not being playable aren't thinking about just how hard it would be to get that to would work.

The whole idea of flood on harvest, they were first discovered on halo, 20 years later, THAT! is what's wrong with it.

By the way, you could make the flood work very well, check out the halo wars official suggestion forums, there have been several excellent ideas there on how the flood could work for years.

Not even contact harvest, but I believe it is the book "First strike" that talks about not the whole planet being glassed... but I think that may have been the planet Reach, not Harvest. But I can't remember. (However they would probably do that to Harvest as well, thinking that it had "relics"

Lets put it this way...

Comparing Halo Wars to any decent PC RTS is like comparing Wii Sports to Fallout 3. Gameplay stripped down to be about as shallow as a puddle, made for people who can't seem to handle complexity.

It's kind of sad seeing a company as talented as Ensemble having to work on a lesser RTS for their final work.

Yeah but you made it sound like you had other things wrong with the game.

I supposed it could work but I just don't like the idea of them being playable.

Well of course RTS is inferior on a console. Nothing can beat keyboard/mouse in an RTS.

Hmm yes the lore might be contradicting. Still, the lore was Bungie's brainchild, and apparently Ensemble studios didn't care for looking into this further before making this.

Spartans use their brains in combat... You know so far every Halo game has stated the exact opposite. Master Chief seems to prefer gunning his way out, jumping headfirst into an army of foes on his own. Doesn't sound very brainy.

Also the trailer: The trailer did its job very well, obviously, since it got you excited about the game. It's almost never a representation about the game's contents. It's a pity, but you could have known.

I quite liked the demo in any case. Especially the ODST drop ability. Extremely handy.

You sure it's not a basic Halo with an RTS thrown in it?

This could make everyone angry, unlike mixing peanut butter and chocolate. Unless you're allergic to peanut butter. Then that just sucks. :(
It is just a basic RTS with the Halo brand slapped on it. It's definitely a very casual take on the genre, and for that, it earns a lot of points.

And thank you for reminding me how horrible it is to be allergic to peanuts.

I don't know about you, but Halo Wars reinvigorated my hopes for the franchise. When I heard they were making this game, and ODST, imagine my pessimism. I always thought Halo was good as it is. A trilogy about the Master Chief against the covenant. It felt like they were milking the franchise.

Playing Halo Wars though, it doesn't try too hard to be a PC RTS, and for that it succeeds. Keeping the structures confined to the control base itself is a great thing, and a bad thing. It's a great thing because then players won't feel too overwhelmed on where to place structures or turrets. It's a bad thing because in RTS games. Placing ANY structure close to each other is a big No-no since you'll end up being more prone to getting attacked severely.

But in spite of all the small problems this game has, I enjoyed it, and this is another triumph for Ensemble Studios. I can see a bright future ahead for the series.

Because the average Halo fan is a trigger happy twithy 12 year old who hasn't ever heard of strategy games and thinks they're a waste because if they go5 seconds without killing an alien they take a seizure. No offence. It looks to be the best of the Halo series.

Relax, not everything has to be intelectually challenging of the Einstein level. Halo Wars is a simple game yes, but that's not per definition bad. What it does, it's doing it ok, it's pretty solid and well made. But yes, it is basicly RTS-Light, but sometimes you just want to have a little fun.

Well, read the OP then, I think I made some points there. Back when I made this thread, I didn't even know that the flood were in.
