Brainwashing citizens in Overlord 2, then using those citizens to smash through the enemy formations.

Endless Ocean - Hayley Westenra combined with light gameplay and soothing oceanic sounds was very relaxing.

Oblivion was incredibly relaxing. I think the music had a lot to do with it. you just wandered around this picturesque place doing favors for elves.

X2/X3 is probably the most chilled game you can ever play. you can program your ship to auto fly and sit back and watch the pretty colors and listen to the chilled out tunage.

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender Of Earths Future has you playing as a dolphin swimming around these really cool reefs again to new age music. It was brilliant. Until a 50 foot great white shows up!

Homeworld 1-2 are both really relaxing games.

Must be the colors.

Another one, the music on the Halo 3 title screen.

The minimal, simple string piece is beautiful. Monk chant is nice too.

Unfortunately, the music is now the only reason I ever put Halo 3 in the console...

Mass Effect, just sat there listening to the music on the start screen. it always calms me down
I love that too.

It was a great touch how they brought that music into the gameplay in the game's penultimate chapter,
as you drove through the ancient prothean civilisation

It felt like coming full circle, discovering the origins of the game's universe.

Halo, especially the second level redundantly called, "Halo."
Also, have people already forgot the works of Tale of Tales?

Phantasy Star Online: Epsiode One and Two

In particular, Forest one, Cave two, Mine areas, and the Jungle areas are very calming, despite the enemies in the Mine and Jungle zones. The reason why they're so soothing is their music and atmosphere combined with the simple play style of PSO...though I've gotta shed some light on the Caves.

Cave one is like taking an afternoon walk through Hell, lava, lava, and more damn lava, and the map layout is too damn easy to remember...which is good because then you can just speed through into Cave two. Now, Cave two is a humid, watery, underground cavern which is chock full of lifeforms, ranging from mutants too lush foliage...simply put, it's a paradise after having trekked through Cave one, though in a cruel twist of fate, Cave three lies beyond Cave two...and Cave three is just dull, mind-numbing, soul-flattening dull.

Gears of War 2... ripping through a giant worms arteries with the sound of blood splattering everywhere while you have the feeling you may drown at any time is truly relaxing...

Harvest Moon used to do the trick. Man, I miss that game.
Oblivion: Just wandering around the games emptiness.
Morrowind: Wandering around until cliff racers attack me.

Oblivion
It is sometimes just so calming to walk through the countryside, heading nowhere in particular.
Also, in Morrowind I loved it when I was in the Ascodian Isles and a thunderstorm started.

I dont know why, but as long as I enjoy playing a game I can find something in it that just make me zone out and do whatever it is that thing needs. Half life (both) Diablo 2, WoW, Rappelz, Prototype, Black and White 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Monster Hunter. Every game I've liked has some part, whether it's actiony or tranquil, that makes me just feel all calm and good inside.

I think thats what makes them good games for me perhaps?
