I always used to think my playing of Diablo 2 was helping me immensely to learn new words from other intelligent online players.

And of course, different weapons and their subtleties. It seems obvious to me the difference between a morning star, a mace and a flail, but you would be surprised how many people don't know..

Yes, a damn minecraft server by the name of mine.aperturegames.com drilled the right spelling of aperture into my brain deep enough that not even brain surgery has any hope of removing it.

Zelda Ocarina of Time just helped me to learn English. I played it when I was four or something, with my mother, and she read out the words for me. I got frustrated with how slow that was, so I taught myself to read to play the game.

"Heterodox", which is another way of saying "out of the ordinary". I don't recall where it's from.

MGS3 taught me alot about the Cold War, like how the Russians had a tank that fired nukes but it got destroyed by a half blind man and a biker chick.

Joking asside.
I know far too much about guns, wars and the military thanks to games. When someone doesnt know the difference between a clip or a magazine, howitzers and mortars, gauge and calibur, I can get more than alittle upset as it is basic knowledge to me.

Nope... I read too many books for that... Even Deus Ex Machina was a familiar term before I played a certain awesome stealth shooter.

I have played games since a young age, so it has taught me a lot, in fact, I think Pokemon red taught me the word "continue".

Age of Empires taught me most of what I know about military history until the fall of the Byzantine Empire :p The classes I took on religion and Islamic history were just gravy.

Magic: the Gathering and WoW definitely helped - How could they not?

Ripped from one of my first ever posts:

English Prof: *is writing on the board* and so we see the subject is me and the verb is calling and the direct object is my mother.
Random guy: Sir, why would you be calling your mother?
EP: I don't know. I want to know her recipe for vichyssoise.
*blank stares from class*
EP: Vichyssoise is a kind of soup. *writes it on board* Wait, that doesn't look right. *tries again* Okay, sorry, I don't know how to spell it.
Me: Vichyssoise is spelled V-I-C-H-Y-S-S-O-I-S-E.
*blank stares from everyone*
EP: Thank you, Victoria. How do you know that?
Me: *bright smile* I learned it from playing a video game.

(in context: Earlier, I turned in a paper I wrote about how we can learn things from video games and he called me into his office to tell me I was, in his opinion, full of shit)

(the game was Animal Crossing: Wild World, by the way)

i wanted to learn to read when i was 4 because i got a gameboy with two games for Christmas: Super mario something and zelda something. i thought super mario blows and wanted to play zelda but had to learn to read so i enjoyed my sister to teach me how to read(she still holds this over my had AND forced me learn roman numerals when i was 8 out of spite). I could only be bothered to learn english properly(meaning invest time outside of school) after my starcraft clan went multinational and i wanted to understand what those guys were going on about

individual words?
i new how certain insect body parts were called from starcraft

Lots of stuff to be mentioned, but the one thing that is pretty useful is city names in the Civilization games.

I remember recently on the #escapist that someone mentioned they were from Syracuse, NY - which made me think of Syracuse in Sicily.

I'm sure I picked up a lot of spelling from Final Fantasy VII-IX. Other games taught me a bunch of vocabulary words. However, this was all several years ago, so it's all common knowledge to me now and I can't tell you what I learned.
