I know all about it. A reactor blew up and they're trying to stop the others from following in suit. Most places haven't go power, water or a phoneline. Really glad I don't live over there right now.
Just a guess here, are you American?ZombieGenesis said:I don't mean here on the Escapist of course, there are plenty of threads about it. But I have noticed something most unsettling.
Despite the fact that the Japanese PM has proclaimed these events the most destrutive since World War II (it takes a lot of natural disaster to reach that kind of level!) nobody in my flats seems to even be aware it's going on. One would think that a campus of web savvy students would notice these things unfolding, but nobody has mentioned it, and nobody I mention it to seems to know what I'm talking about...
Are we really so detached from the world?
Heh yeah, same thing here in the Netherlands. Some of the anti-nuclear power groups try to make a mass hysteria about this in the hope that it will persuade the government not to open a second plant. It's quite sickening really, using the suffering of another country to fuel their own propaganda.Exterminas said:There is a difference between knowing and caring.
Also there is a huge difference between caring and acting.
What exactly are people supposed to do? Tear their garments appart in despair? Life goes on.
On the contary: Here in Germany people care way too much. The environmental activists are already up in arms claiming that german nuclear reactors have to be shut down because the same might happen here. Funny thing is: We ain't got no earthquakes or Tsumani in Germany. Germany is propably the safest place on earth to built your reactors. (As long as we don't have any fasicsts around)
And even if we shut all the reactors down people would just built them anew in countries with lesser security standards or more geographical dangers.
So you see, even if they don't know, so that they don't care, that doesn't have to be a bad thing. They propbably couldn't change anything.
Oh well, with the netherlands I can somewhat see the point. You country is mostly under sealevel. If global warming hits you, the situations can be compared.Nimcha said:Heh yeah, same thing here in the Netherlands. All while using more nuclear power would rather prevent our country from flooding. The weird ways politicians' brains work around here...Nimcha said:Heh yeah, same thing here in the Netherlands. Seriously? Jesus, there was a note on Google telling th world about their tsunami alert on the day that it happened, I'd have thought that'd at least be enough to spread the news to most of the world.ZombieGenesis said:I don't mean here on the Escapist of course, there are plenty of threads about it. What, TV?notyouraveragejoe said:Yeah, its a huge deal where I live (France). Everyone knows about it.GundamSentinel said:Seriously? Everyone around here knows about it. Are you absolutely sure TV has been introduced where you live? It's like a box with a screen, you can't miss it.
I'm a little curious as to what you mean by that.GeorgW said:Just a guess here, are you American?
