I know all about it. A reactor blew up and they're trying to stop the others from following in suit. Most places haven't go power, water or a phoneline. Really glad I don't live over there right now.

ive heard, people have heard, but i think me and everyone around me has just been desensitized to this stuff by now. you hear of one tragedy youve heard them all; not like the world wasnt miserable enough prior to this announcement, just one more thing we'll all forget about in a month.

Despite the fact that the Japanese PM has proclaimed these events the most destrutive since World War II (it takes a lot of natural disaster to reach that kind of level!) nobody in my flats seems to even be aware it's going on. One would think that a campus of web savvy students would notice these things unfolding, but nobody has mentioned it, and nobody I mention it to seems to know what I'm talking about...

Are we really so detached from the world?
Just a guess here, are you American?
It's everywhere where I'm from. I don't see how you could miss it.

There is a difference between knowing and caring.
Also there is a huge difference between caring and acting.

What exactly are people supposed to do? Tear their garments appart in despair? Life goes on.

On the contary: Here in Germany people care way too much. The environmental activists are already up in arms claiming that german nuclear reactors have to be shut down because the same might happen here. Funny thing is: We ain't got no earthquakes or Tsumani in Germany. Germany is propably the safest place on earth to built your reactors. (As long as we don't have any fasicsts around)

And even if we shut all the reactors down people would just built them anew in countries with lesser security standards or more geographical dangers. Because elictricity doesn't come from sockets.

So you see, even if they don't know, so that they don't care, that doesn't have to be a bad thing. They propbably couldn't change anything.

Heh yeah, same thing here in the Netherlands. Some of the anti-nuclear power groups try to make a mass hysteria about this in the hope that it will persuade the government not to open a second plant. It's quite sickening really, using the suffering of another country to fuel their own propaganda.

Is it just me or was I the only one who found out by loading google up and saw it showed a tsunami alert for japan and other nearby countries?

Anyway, maybe it's the fact that the people who knew about it have probably already talked about it.

And I think everyone is ignorant sometimes.

Oh well, with the netherlands I can somewhat see the point. You country is mostly under sealevel. If global warming hits you, the situations can be compared.

But of course it is as you said, using such an event is disgusting.

Also nuclear energy is our best bet to stop global warming from striking, because it is cheap and doesn't produce any Co2

If you have turned your TV on within the past 2 days, you've heard of it.

I just don't care. Yeah, people have died, but they aren't a 3rd world country. They can take care of themselves.

Maybe God is trying to tell them that he hates Anime.

Everyone in my Facebook circle knew within four hours of it happening. I didn't see any sick jokes about it, either.

Everyone i know has heard although a couple of really quite dim girls live on my corridor (at uni)
When talking about the general situation in the world
"No i don't know who colonel gadaffi is, is it some boy thing or something?"
*facepalms all around*
she then followed that a couple of minutes later with
"What is a tsunami?"
I wish i was joking, she really didn't know

Pretty well known here in SoCal.
(Specially since my brother happened to be vacationing at the time there. He's okay, but still)

All while using more nuclear power would rather prevent our country from flooding. The weird ways politicians' brains work around here...

Seriously? Jesus, there was a note on Google telling th world about their tsunami alert on the day that it happened, I'd have thought that'd at least be enough to spread the news to most of the world.

I live in Japan and came back to the UK for a two week break. I am living in Osaka and have been watching the news like a hawk.

Living in Japan, I am used to things like earthquakes and tsunami warnings. Therefore when I first heard the news me and my friends were like earthquake yay lol e.t.c.

As the news unfolded, it all became unreal. I have never known anything like this.

I am still coming to terms with everything. I was meaning to open a thread but I could not put anything into words

I am due to go back on Friday and I am a) afraid that I will not be allowed to fly out, b) afraid of the Japan that I will return to

Soon as I get back I am going to help with the relief effort.

I would talk more about the nuclear situation...but I am not there yet...

In this day and age I'd be surprised if somebody hadn't heard about it. Maybe for a day, but still not knowing a few days after a major event?

Its been all over the news and web. This morning on the news they even had a, seemingly random, Japanese person on Skype. I think he ran a cricket club or something.

I'm a little curious as to what you mean by that.

OT:

Lots of people have heard about them, but it's an earthquake. Not sure what we could say other than: "DAMN that earthquake was shitty!".

With an assasination or something we can have a discussion about the shooter/assassin, the morals involved, etc.
