A lot of people where I'm from seem to have heard about it and a lot of them are concerned, and some others are making sick jokes about it. Isn't humanity just great?
I heard making sick jokes about it actually matters in the end.

if you feel that nobody seems to know about it, then you must be very socially isolated. al your friends must be idiots living under a rock escaping from the real world to play online or even offline single player rpg games...from japan.

everyone knows about what's going on in japan right now, seriously, no one doesn't. now go join a new circle of intelligent friends who are well informed on what's going on around them.

I hear ya.

I seemed to be the only person in my school who had heard about it the following day and spent the entire day explaining what happened and why I was so concerned. (I have family there.)

Most people don't watch the news here!

its all over TV, news papers, every one is talking about it, they have to know... if not, maybe go and get a baseball bat or a cricket bat and belt them a little with it

Really? I can't STOP hearing about the disasters...

At this point, the main thing I'm worried about is the Nuclear cloud that could make its way to California and potentially irradiate the area. Doesn't directly affect me out here in the middle of the U.S. but indirectly that radiation will seep into the produce that we get from California and it could be a huge issue.

Wait, you mean to say that somebody hasn't heard about the Japan earthquake/tsunami? I don't think I know anyone who hasn't heard of it, and I know some pretty ignorant people...

Thank God for the BBC.

All I can say is that if you have a working radio, you should tune it to one of the BBC radio stations, since most of the news is shared across from the rolling news coverage plus it's extended if nesessary.

It's not that I don't sympathize so much as, if you're going to get stressed out by natural disasters throughout the world, you'll never get anything done.

Japan is facing a death toll somewhere in the tens of thousands. Terrible, right?

Hunger kills 17,000 children each day, 6 million a year [http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/11/17/italy.food.summit/index.html].

Bam! Eat that, your world view.

So, yeah, I'm not going to stress what's going on in Japan. Tragedy, but a drop in the bucket in the global scheme of things.

Wasn't it on google's main page before it happened or something as well?
Surely they would have seen it

I don't mean here on the Escapist of course, there are plenty of threads about it. But I have noticed something most unsettling.
Despite the fact that the Japanese PM has proclaimed these events the most destrutive since World War II (it takes a lot of natural disaster to reach that kind of level!) nobody in my flats seems to even be aware it's going on. One would think that a campus of web savvy students would notice these things unfolding, but nobody has mentioned it, and nobody I mention it to seems to know what I'm talking about...

Are we really so detached from the world?
Just a guess here, are you American?
It's everywhere where I'm from. I don't see how you could miss it.
Its on the news every night here in the U.S.

And if I remember correctly, "flats" is slang for apartment in Britain, yes?

It's all over TV news, but then again I don't watch much TV in order to safeguard what little sanity I have left. That's why the first thing I do every day is check news sites online.

I'm a little curious as to what you mean by that.

OT:

Lots of people have heard about them, but it's an earthquake. Not sure what we could say other than: "DAMN that earthquake was shitty!".

With an assasination or something we can have a discussion about the shooter/assassin, the morals involved, etc.
I don't mean to offend, I'm just curious if the stereotype that Americans have poor coverage about international news is true.

My friends walked into my room few days ago and said can't believe about the tsunami, my response was one of... well i was lost, had no idea what they were on about - I enjoy checking stuff out on the internet so i just researched the hell out of it.

But to be honest the reason why I didnt know about it was because i dont watch television. We all just go online to check our programs so there was no way of me knowing. I've got a feeling most students dont have to time/or whatever reason to watch the news.

I'm kinda meh. I mean it's not like it' hati where people where living in Shanty towns. It's japan. They should be able to handle their own disasters just like we should of with Hurricane Katrina.

A large earthquake, tsunamis, and nuclear scares all in one day?

Dude, who hasn't heard of it? All over the news and the net.
