Pokemon has always been a god damn horrible show. The only reason it seemed good as kids is because it was written with kids in mind. And I don't mean the "Hey, kids will understand this, though we'll add some more complex ideas in there too that might even add depth that adults can enjoy". No, it's the "Hey, kids are fucking stupid, just feed them the same basic formulaic shit every time and they'll lap it up."

What annoys me about the anime is that Ash always gets rid of his most powerful Pokemon and just gets shitty starter ones again. I mean I know its so Nintendo can show off the new Pokemon, but come on! He's had a Charizard, a Sceptile, a Pidgeot and a Torterra to name but a few. Why would you get rid of those and just start again? It makes him look stupid and he always gets his arse kicked because of it.

Also, the voice acting is just... just terrible.

He even tried to get rid of Pikachu

Oh thank god...you were referring to the anime. To answer your question, yes, the anime has always been pretty awful. I've been obsessed with the game series since I was around 7 (I'm 20 now), but I started hating the show at like 10. Some of the movies are kinda cool, though, like the Arceus one, and the "Mewtwo Returns" special is pretty tight, too. The show itself is pretty cringe-worthy in my opinion, though.

I recently watched the older episodes, and yes the show's not very good, but it's wasn't bad. I seemed alright for children, and I still get nostalgic watching it. Now, the newer show pissed me off.

Well it's meant for younger kids so it can be a bit silly because young kids won't notice that but only the awesomeness of the pokemon battles and all the friends are great stuff.
I watched first and second worlds as a kid but then I stopped watching. So yeah, the series is pretty childish and whatnot but it's also aimed a young generation so it doesn't need to be top notch anime like death note for example.

I guess the reason people look back to the first season is because of nostalgia factor, but if you really take a look at it you'll see that it's all the same jokes, boring plots and Team Rocket being blasted off yet again (something people managed to get tired of already in the FIRST season).

So for any relation to pokemon i say: Play the games, watch the gym and/or league battles of the anime and shun everything else. Though the first movie was actually pretty good if only because Mewtwo was in it.

It was always a kid orientated show but after one of the main writers left his name escapes me the show did start to deteriorate a bit but its general spirit and soul still remains in my opinion to this day. Although it will get awkward when Ash is like 88 looks like Herbet and is going around playing with little kids pokeballs.

The main problem is that it sticks to the exact same formula and never really attempts to mix it up what so ever with even Ash still being 10. Now while there is an argument if it ain't broke don't fix it but a bit of variety to break up the monotony of it when I still watched it would have been nice. Although more than Pokemon is guilty of that.

Me and my friend did a Pokemon night and watched the first 1 and I quite enjoyed it, along with comments that made it better.(Every time James said something we'd say up my ass at the end). Other than it being predictable I love the show, and as a kid it was freaking awesome. The new stuff not so much but I can live with it.

I quite liked the Pokemon anime of days past. I cannot say that I am as fond of the newer ones. As in, I do not like them. At all.
